Moveon

A press release from MoveOn announcing the launch of a $1 million, month-long ad campaign against John McCain.

A one million dollar month-long TV ad campaign against Senator John McCain will begin with the airing of a 30 second spot on Thursday, May 5th, the fifth anniversary of President Bush's "Mission Accomplished" speech. MoveOn will spend $160,000 to air the new ad, titled "Candles", on cable as well as on broadcast networks in Iowa and New Mexico - states where Senator McCain is currently on the air unopposed.

The spot features a cake with the words "Mission Accomplished" in icing and five candles being lit on the cake. As John McCain's voice declares that the American people aren't concerned if we stay in Iraq for 100 years, the candles on the cake continue to multiply until they number 100. The shot then fades into a picture of President Bush and John McCain hugging. The ad, paid for exclusively by MoveOn's Political Action Committee and its small donor contributors, will run for a week.

"Voters need to know Senator McCain would continue President Bush's failed policies - in Iraq and elsewhere. A vote for him is basically a vote for a third Bush term." said Eli Pariser, MoveOn's Executive Director.

Hate to be a buzzkill here, but when taken in context, McCain meant that he'd be satisfied with a stable American peacekeeping presence in Iraq for the next 100 years, not a century of war. I want to defeat MaCain in November, too, but seriously, isn't it better to claim an honorable victory in the general election? MoveOn is a great organization, but they're intentionally misrepresenting McCain's words.

We have enough on the Republicans to win without the Rovian tactics. So why use them? Simply because, dishonest as they are, they work, as the Republicans have proven time and time again?

NO on the honorable victory if it means another four years of Republican rule. If the Dems had been a little tougher the last time around, we might not have Roberts and Alio on the Supreme Court. I hope MoveOn bring back the General Betrayus ad; it is becoming more true each time that Bushtoad opens his mouth. And if Congress censors them, they can always say, "So."

I respectfully disagree with you, who32, even while I share your outrage. The "General Betrayus" ad was justifiable because the general did, in fact, lie in order to toe the party line. McCain's comments are altogehter different.

Actually, even in context, he's contradicting himself. He actually said "As long as Americans are not being injured or harmed or wounded or killed. That’s fine with me..." Since they are being killed, injured, harmed and wounded, then when does the "peaceful" 100 years start? If he's not willing to pull out now, he won't ever be ready. He doesn't even know who the enemy is.

Who cares if McCain is being taken out of context. In fact saying he was taken out of context is total BS. He was asked how much longer he thought the US would have to stay in Iraq. You know his answer. What america heard is what america heard. 100 more years of war or 100 more years as a peacekeeping (for Israel) presence is still 100 more years of a dangerous foreign policy & 100 more years of debt and troop & Iraqi casualties. Pehaps if our government had been honest with the american taxpayers we would have heard McCain's 100 more years quote and thought "Oh of course! Yes- 100 more years, I should hope so! We are building THE largest embassy & military base in the world in Iraq so it seems logical that those in the know - planned this all along and must know best!"

Don't pity the fool. This is just the Rove led neocons trying to do away with that really great nickname before November -"100 more years McCain".

Unfortunately, your final question hits the nail squarely on the head. It's not advisable to show up at a gunfight armed only with a knife.

Way cool. Why not blend in bush's remark at his last public viewing (can't call drivel, spin and bs a press conference.) saying that mccain would carry on his "fight".

O.K., agreed -- McCain is a bad dude set upon war along with his puppet-master Lieberman. But just who does MoveOn present as his alternative? If not McCain, then who? Hillary ("Obliterate Iran")?, Obama (who will have us in Iraq until things "stabilize" -- and they never will) or Ron Paul? Some news to MoveOn: Ron Paul is the only candidate who not only voted against the war to begin with, the only one who has faced up to neocon rage by wanting our troops home NOW , and for this has been ridiculed and rejected by the media and abandoned by MoveOn. Oh, I know they are all for peace and justice and all sorts of good things. But these impotent sign shakers and cake-bakers have simply abandoned the only candidate they have -- Ron Paul.

And Ron Paul thinks that our tax laws should be repealed... while our bridges collaspse and our schools have a 50% drop-out rate in many inner cities. I'm no fan of taxes, but I believe that it's what we do as nation to underwrite the common good. Unlike a steady 63% of all Americans, he's anti-choice. While I think that he has some good ideas, I also think he has some downright nutty ones. Ron Paul is no alternative. MoveOn is it's membership, and MoveOn members voted many months ago to endorse and support Obama.

Ron Paul right on the war just as a broken clock is right twice a day. Other than this, he is a wack job.

Here is the problem with the MoveOn "candles" ad:

The words "mission accomplished" flash back to the carrier deck banner flown just after the actual successful military campaign to invade Iraq and belittles it.

it is the aftermath of that particulary day, the looting, the decision to occupy while destroying the institutions which maintained order in Iraq, the failure of the Republicans to follow the advice of Shinseki who said more troops were required and fire him for telling the truth, etc. - those are the things that should be highlighted.

I never trusted MoveOn - my guess is that they are an "agence provocateur" funded by the right wing military/industrial/international financial types.

Stop being manipulated, VOTE OBAMA 08
