WASHINGTON — Barack Obama is closing in on Democratic presidential rival Hillary Rodham Clinton's advantage among superdelegates, building on his lead in the primary race even as he faces troubled times.

Party leaders are encouraging superdelegates to pick a side by late June to prevent the fight from going to the national convention in August, and it seems some are listening as the race enters its final five weeks of voting.

Chelsea Clinton got a superdelegate for her mom while campaigning in Puerto Rico on Wednesday, just as Obama press secretary Bill Burton sent out a statement announcing the support of Rep. Lois Capps. The statement didn't mention the personal connection _ Capps is Burton's mother-in-law.

Clinton had a big jump start among superdelegates, many of whom have ties to the Clintons and backed her candidacy early on. But most of the superdelegates taking sides recently have gone for Obama, who has won more state contests.

Obama trails Clinton by just 21 superdelegates, 243-264, cutting her lead in half in less than two months. This week, he picked up seven delegates to her four.

The superdelegate chase is a key piece of good news for Obama in what has been a bad week. The Illinois senator is coming off a big loss in Pennsylvania, steeped in controversy surrounding his outspoken former pastor while Clinton fares better against Republican likely nominee John McCain in the latest Associated Press-Ipsos poll.

But the problems aren't stopping his ability to win support from superdelegates who are likely to cast the deciding votes in the Democratic race.

Rep. Bruce Braley of Iowa said he decided to endorse Obama even though his former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, has been creating waves by making controversial statements and suggesting that Obama secretly agrees with him. Obama denounced Wright in a news conference Tuesday and said the pastor does not speak for him.

"That's been one of the most frustrating things about this prolonged campaign, is we seemed to have gotten away from the critical issues that started this campaign during the Iowa caucuses and now it's more about the side spectacle than the issues that voters really care about," Braley said. "I'm confident that he has taken this issue head-on. He has addressed it in a thoughtful and enlightened way."

Superdelegates are nearly 800 elected leaders and Democratic party officials who aren't bound by the outcome of state contests and can cast their ballot for any candidate at the national convention. They are especially valuable in this race since neither Clinton nor Obama can get enough delegates to win the nomination through the primaries and caucuses held across the country.

Obama now leads in the delegate count overall 1731.5 to 1598.5 for Clinton. A candidate needs 2,025 delegates to win the nomination. About 230 superdelegates remain undecided, and about 60 more will be selected at state party conventions and meetings throughout the spring.

Clinton had stalled in drawing their support as Obama won more states than she, but Clinton won Pennsylvania last week and has been able to announce a new supporter every day this week _ two on Wednesday.

The Clinton campaign said Luisette Cabanas, vice chair of the Democratic Committee in Puerto Rico, came on board while the candidate's daughter Chelsea was campaigning on the island. Cabanas cited Clinton's policies, especially on health care, as "the best by far of any candidate in history."

"Today I endorse Hillary Clinton for president because of her strong win in Pennsylvania," Cabanas said in a statement. "She has shown a firm conviction and the character needed to lead the nation."

Capps said it wasn't an easy decision to pick between Obama and Clinton. She has family ties to both candidates _ Obama's spokesman is married to her daughter, Laura Burton Capps, who also worked in the Clinton White House.

Lois Capps filled the congressional seat held by her late husband, Walter Capps, when he died suddenly 10 years ago. Bill Clinton had campaigned for Walter Capps and presided over his congressional memorial service.

Capps said Hillary Clinton would be a great president and fill a dream for those who have fought for women's rights. But she said Obama's call for a change in Washington was the most important factor in winning her support.

"Walter once said that 'we are strongest as people when we are directed by that which unites us, rather than giving into the fears, suspicions, innuendoes and paranoias that divide,'" she said in a statement. "For years I have been waiting for a president that speaks to that vision. I believe Barack Obama may very well be that rare leader."

Two of the most important superdelegates to sign on this week come from the states that vote next _ North Carolina and Indiana, which hold primaries on May 6 and are the largest states left to vote. Obama got the support of Rep. Baron Hill of Indiana, while Clinton won the backing of North Carolina Gov. Mike Easley even though Obama is expected to win the state.

maybe someone here can answer this question ---- can a delegate stay neutral? seeing as the candidates are so close in numbers, and within the margin of error in most polls, why cant a delegate just say " no, i won't participate in this madness ". lets face it folks, these Del. are just positioning themselves for a share of the power. do you really think they care about you? they got us into this mess in the first place, the whole lot of them. this is just another way of keeping the power in the hands of the few. ---------- what ever happen to one person, one vote? ------- what happen to term limits? no one talks about that anymore! ------- the 2000 election was a mess, where is the remedy? ------ do you think it is time for a Constitutional Convention? ------ your being played for a sucker, how does that feel? ------

Count the voters and delegates from Michigan and Florida.
That would make for a refreshing headline.

If she counts the votes from Florida, Obama would still be ahead in the popular vote. If you count the ones in Michigan where she got 328,309 she'd be ahead by less than a 100,00 but keep in mind that Obama followed the rules and took his name off the ballot. 238,168 people voted Uncommitted so does this mean we would give those votes to Obama instead, If we do that it puts him back in the lead. So even if we use her new math either way she loses the popular vote.

Somebody explain to me why winning the white middle class working voter only counts in the states she's won and not in the other states?

I really think if Clinton doesn't get the nomination she will run as an independent but that will be a win for Obama because then the Republicans will do the negative stuff and Obama won't have to. Having 3 strong candidates would be even more exciting don't you think?

This is getting good.

Get on the Obama bandwagon before it's too late. It's too late for Hillary to win this thing.

I believe it is more a bandwagon of people wanting America to be what it used to stand for...that these 8 years have taken away from all of us.

Barack Obama is truly the best for that job. I hope the young folks come out by the millions to take us in a positive direction . You are our future now.

People who hope that the best man can still win, even after being pummelled by a biased, racist media. Hillary used and continues to use the race card, and the media is against Obama because the majority of influential reporters and anchors have been shilling for the Bush and Cheney massacre for eight years. They certainly don't want a peacemaker that would actually work against the military industrial complex, and their selective coverage of Wright is evidence of a press that no longer represents the people. Obama is still fighting the good fight, but I fear that the racists have once again prevailed. This is America, and blacks have lived as second-class citizens for over two hundred years. It comes as no surprise to me that even a fellow democrat would denigrate him to the point of no return.

obama is not the "best" man--he's the least bad, which is something quite different. obama is not fighting the good fight. he's the most right-leaning of all of the democratic candidates in terms of health care and economic policy proposals. i will vote for him in november, but not because i'm swept away in rapture at the thought of a half-black president, but because obama is less bad than mccain. obama's campaign is not a victory for racial relations--one need only look at his views on the death penalty, something that disadvantages blacks much more than whites.

People like me and the majority of superdelegate that know that Obama is the only hope for the future and that Hillary is the past. We must change the direction of this country and Hillary just bring more of the same old politics. We need someone that will get things done, not someone that wants to fight the same old battles over and over again. She fought for Helathcare 15 years ago and failed at that......

Explain something to me. If Barack is such a bad candidate and if "guaranteed loser" then why is he BEATING THE CLINTON MACHINE???? If he is so bad why is he winning? Doesn't that make her a BIGGER LOSER than him????

I'm a 67 year old grandma, that wants a future for my grandchildren. I don't need the same old crap we have now and what Hillary will give us. Obama is our future and our,"Hope." I have voted for many President's, and Obama is one of the best candidates we have had. We just had 7 years of the same old lies. Hillary is part of the problem we are having now, she voted for this war. It will be refreshing to have a young President with new ideas. Also, it will great to see kids running around the White House again. By, the way, I am white. If you Hillary supporters can't see that, you have your rose colored glasses on.

As much as Huffpo and the MSM keep trying to raise him back up....Obama is nearing the end. Hillary has now cut his lead in NC down to single digits, and she has regained her lead in Indiana by 7-9 points. Primary is less then a week away.

Despite the massive, pathetic campaugn against her by the morons of Huffpo, NBC, Newsweek...and the rest, Hillary is now in a position to win Indiana and come very close in NC....effectively ending Obama's run. It's over folks, hate to break it to you:)

Why does that end his run? Her run did not end when she lost 11 states in a row. Why would his run end when he is ahead of her in delegates and popular vote? Your statement sounds kind of moronic to me.

I have lost respect for the press. Their complete obsession with peripheral and minor matters week after week reflects very poorly on them (Wright's views, bittergate).

And, they clearly are opposed to Obama. They only talk about HIS alleged achilles' heel - not Clinton's. She has a closet full of skeletons that are never trotted out like obama's are. (How about Foster, for one)?

I do like Obama because he refuses to play the negative campaigning game. I detest Hillary Clinton and would absolutely never vote for her because I think such a devious person - and one so ready to push the nuclear button (cf. comments on Iran) is dangerous.

Obama's next ad should start with him pumping his own gas, then making his own coffee, both of which I am fairly certain that he could accomplish without Secret Service assistance, unlike Her Royal Highness, who could do neither. Then he should speak about how it was Bill Clinton that allowed the Chinese to purchase Magnaquench and move Indiana jobs overseas.

dream on, Hillary is toast, she is losing the superdelegates, her math sucks, how she made it through college is anybody's guess and she is delusional - she thinks she brought peace to Ireland and avoided sniper fire in Bosnia and wants to Obliterate Iran. She's a joke on the international front.

BS. People aren't going to vote based on religion anymore. The pendulum has swung, thank Buddha. Hillary's negatives are too obvious to be ignored, and the Wright thing is a 3rd party issue that will once again fade. It's already fading in the nightly cycle.

I know you are committed to your candidate, and I respect that as long as you make sense, but you should remain open to the fact a lot of Superdelegates are going to commit after Tuesday for Obama.

She was supposed to be "inevitable" so why didn't she blow

Polls show most people don't like her or trust her.

He has run a smooth campaign, unlike Hillary's
If Hillary can't beat him within her own Party,

Very simple. The left wing activists won't be even close to get Obama competitive. He is losing the white vote, women, catholics, hispanics. He will join " The Loser Club" of Carter, Dukakis, Gore and Kerry. You will at least have " The Losing Five"
By the way, can you name the last Democratic President, not to mention The last Democratic President to win reelection?

Right now it's 1731-1598 Obama right?

A rough next week for Obama would look something like...
Guam: 6-3 Clinton, IN: 45-39 Clinton, NC: 69-65 Obama

which will make it... 1842-1714 Obama right?

Above article says there are 230+60=290 uncommitted superdels right? If they all break 5-4 Obama from now on (like they have been this past week amidst all the Wright stuff) it will be..
2003-1843 Obama. If the uncommitted superdels even so much as break 6-3 in favor of Obama this thing is over next Tuesday. Electability, shmelectability.

But... sigh.... between Hillary's war on math and the media's frenzied nonsense, it's all lost. They'll all probably run a cover next week on "How Obama pulled it off" and try to feed us new stories about Obama's superhuman inner strength or some such thing. Everything has to be news nowadays. If people actually start making calculations and predictions god forbid, do you realize there'll be no news to tell?

If Indiana is still going for Hillary (which I am not certain of), I have only one thing to say to the folks of that great state... like Sean Connery would say to Harrison Ford.... Indiana, Indiana, let it go.

And we are suppose to believe these clowns? It is only in their dreams that Senator from NY is in lead. Other more important polls show Barack Obama 7 points ahead. True when you go around HRC supporters to create poll then she will be leading, then you add some points to Barack Obama so it is not so visible that she is leading and hurray new poll is here.
