WASHINGTON — Barack Obama is closing in on Democratic presidential rival Hillary Rodham Clinton's advantage among superdelegates, building on his lead in the primary race even as he faces troubled times.

Party leaders are encouraging superdelegates to pick a side by late June to prevent the fight from going to the national convention in August, and it seems some are listening as the race enters its final five weeks of voting.

Chelsea Clinton got a superdelegate for her mom while campaigning in Puerto Rico on Wednesday, just as Obama press secretary Bill Burton sent out a statement announcing the support of Rep. Lois Capps. The statement didn't mention the personal connection _ Capps is Burton's mother-in-law.

Clinton had a big jump start among superdelegates, many of whom have ties to the Clintons and backed her candidacy early on. But most of the superdelegates taking sides recently have gone for Obama, who has won more state contests.

Obama trails Clinton by just 21 superdelegates, 243-264, cutting her lead in half in less than two months. This week, he picked up seven delegates to her four.

The superdelegate chase is a key piece of good news for Obama in what has been a bad week. The Illinois senator is coming off a big loss in Pennsylvania, steeped in controversy surrounding his outspoken former pastor while Clinton fares better against Republican likely nominee John McCain in the latest Associated Press-Ipsos poll.

But the problems aren't stopping his ability to win support from superdelegates who are likely to cast the deciding votes in the Democratic race.

Rep. Bruce Braley of Iowa said he decided to endorse Obama even though his former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, has been creating waves by making controversial statements and suggesting that Obama secretly agrees with him. Obama denounced Wright in a news conference Tuesday and said the pastor does not speak for him.

Story continues below

"That's been one of the most frustrating things about this prolonged campaign, is we seemed to have gotten away from the critical issues that started this campaign during the Iowa caucuses and now it's more about the side spectacle than the issues that voters really care about," Braley said. "I'm confident that he has taken this issue head-on. He has addressed it in a thoughtful and enlightened way."

Superdelegates are nearly 800 elected leaders and Democratic party officials who aren't bound by the outcome of state contests and can cast their ballot for any candidate at the national convention. They are especially valuable in this race since neither Clinton nor Obama can get enough delegates to win the nomination through the primaries and caucuses held across the country.

Obama now leads in the delegate count overall 1731.5 to 1598.5 for Clinton. A candidate needs 2,025 delegates to win the nomination. About 230 superdelegates remain undecided, and about 60 more will be selected at state party conventions and meetings throughout the spring.

Clinton had stalled in drawing their support as Obama won more states than she, but Clinton won Pennsylvania last week and has been able to announce a new supporter every day this week _ two on Wednesday.

The Clinton campaign said Luisette Cabanas, vice chair of the Democratic Committee in Puerto Rico, came on board while the candidate's daughter Chelsea was campaigning on the island. Cabanas cited Clinton's policies, especially on health care, as "the best by far of any candidate in history."

"Today I endorse Hillary Clinton for president because of her strong win in Pennsylvania," Cabanas said in a statement. "She has shown a firm conviction and the character needed to lead the nation."

Capps said it wasn't an easy decision to pick between Obama and Clinton. She has family ties to both candidates _ Obama's spokesman is married to her daughter, Laura Burton Capps, who also worked in the Clinton White House.

Lois Capps filled the congressional seat held by her late husband, Walter Capps, when he died suddenly 10 years ago. Bill Clinton had campaigned for Walter Capps and presided over his congressional memorial service.

Capps said Hillary Clinton would be a great president and fill a dream for those who have fought for women's rights. But she said Obama's call for a change in Washington was the most important factor in winning her support.

"Walter once said that 'we are strongest as people when we are directed by that which unites us, rather than giving into the fears, suspicions, innuendoes and paranoias that divide,'" she said in a statement. "For years I have been waiting for a president that speaks to that vision. I believe Barack Obama may very well be that rare leader."

Two of the most important superdelegates to sign on this week come from the states that vote next _ North Carolina and Indiana, which hold primaries on May 6 and are the largest states left to vote. Obama got the support of Rep. Baron Hill of Indiana, while Clinton won the backing of North Carolina Gov. Mike Easley even though Obama is expected to win the state.

It would be crazy to expect superdelegates to commit until things shake out, especially with Obama losing 70% of Catholics, losing 70% of 40+, losing the spanish vote, and losing the blue collar vote. The Huff-poo has been Pr0Bama for some time, The article is a red herring. Clinton just picked up the endorsement from the governor of North Carolina, and Arianna is getting shredded on Charlie Rose this very moment.

HMMMM, who cares about Charlie, most people do not watch him, not blue collar or white collar, only elites who like to feel good about their position in this world.

Don't get me wrong Charlie is good, but he swings way right Republican and soooo you get the drift. Red Herring? How about you feel good above good old Gov of North Carolina and the lies Hillary tells about how Bill never sold the Assets of the Magnet Company to China when he was President, Bill stole their jobs, but to here Hilllary lie Bush did it. I don't like Bush one bit, but please put blame properly on the right guy.

Good for Hillary, she really needs some more sniper fire.

I just read this page of post and you people are the nastiest, most hateful and sleazy people ever. If you are any indication of where Obama will take this country or the Hope and Change he claims to want then God Help all of us. This man is a phony and his followers are a disgusting lot and this site has gone crazy with stupidity. The only thing that drives Obama is his blind ambition and I can't even imagine Ms. "I've never, in my adult life, been really proud of my country" Obama as our First Lady. The two of them and Rev. Wright are peas in a pod and deserve each other. I hope the American people wake up. I'm outta here.

While paid trolls sit here talking about Hillary on O'lielly ABC runs a piece on how Clinton helped torpedo a factory w/ over 10,000 employees (gee I wonder if that's why Hillary agreed to go on O'really)??? Meanwhile Obama just keeps rollin' out more supers & actually the number he needs now to secure the nomination is 285 WE ARE IN COUNTDOWN MODE!!! Eat our dust...
Oh, & I can't wait to see what happens with this WVWV deal that's been robo calling trying to disinfranchise AA voters.

Clinton, both, will lie period.
Traitor to their Country period.
Wealthy and want themselves and their friends to stay that way.
Lies about a factory going to China, Bill did the deal - he approved the sale of the technology to China, which disposed of ALL ASSETS of this company to China, and they then sloowwwwwed down the factory with "contracts" to produce from the Chinese company... which collapsed coincidentally on Bush's watch.

The dirty deed of sending the business oversees is pure and simple an act by Bill Clinton saying f... u to blue collar workers.

For Hillary to lie about this now as something done when Bill wasn't around is pathetic.

Do you ever wonder why so many people are getting on the Barack Hussein Obama bus?

Could it be that this nation is becoming colorblind and does not care if a good person is black, white, red or tan?

Could it be that the American people don’t care if a person worships as a Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, Hindu, or Jew?

Could it be that people remember the scandals of the Clinton years?

Could it be that the American people know that if it was not for the Clinton’s filth and scandals that Al Gore would be completing his second term in office.

Could it be that the American people remember Bush and McCain looking into our eyes and saying, “believe me there are weapons of mass destruction”?

Could it be that the American people are shell shocked that over 4,000 precious lives have been lost fighting the wrong war in the wrong country against the wrong enemy?

Could it be that the American people have noticed that the people that know the Clinton’s best are working on the Obama Campaign?

Could it be that the American people have noticed how mean spirited the Clinton’s have become – and will no longer tolerate their type of campaigning?

Obama message since the beginning of the race:

I AM ASKING YOU TO BELIEVE.
NOT JUST IN MY ABILITY TO BRING ABOUT REAL CHANGE IN WASHINGTON….
I AM ASKING YOU TO BELIEVE IN YOURS

It means: Don’t be confused for to loose your belief about real power of change.

It means: America cannot believe on the Clintons end of War as She only intends to move the military forces to other part of the middle East Pakistan, Iran and more, reason why her promises on HEALTH CARE cannot be a REALITY since the Billion of US dollar will continue to lead America on deficit.

NO EXPERT BELIEVES on Hillary or MacCain BAD PLANS!
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080430/pl_nm/usa_politics_gastax_economists_dc

Apropos the Media: Let them talk about Wright, until the End of the campaign but never let YOURSELF become out routed from the path of a real Change in Washington. Clinton doesn’t and cannot bring change in Washington. “You, the 280 million of America – I LOVE YOU BACK” for the dream we SHARE.

BE STRONG LIKE YOU EVER HAVE BEEN – DON’T LET YOU BE DISTRACTED
WE ARE 280 million Americans, ready for a change we believe in. F.. the MEDIA!

Remember the voice of 280 millions Americans: I AM ASKING YOU TO BELIEVE.
NOT JUST IN MY ABILITY TO BRING ABOUT REAL CHANGE IN WASHINGTON….
I AM ASKING YOU TO BELIEVE IN YOURS ABILITY TO BRING REAL CHANGE

GOD BLESS YOU

April 29: A SurveyUSA North Carolina poll shows a considerably closer race than the other polling firms. SurveyUSA also gave a smaller initial lead that anyone else in the race, but the tightening is now showing across the board:

Barack Obama: 49%

Hillary Clinton: 44%

April 29: Another Rasmussen poll shows Clinton gaining ground in North Carolina, but Obama maintains a sizeable lead:

Barack Obama: 51%

Hillary Clinton: 37%

Intreresting how when Clinton sjupporters assert that Obama is "behind by 8 - 10 points" they never cite their sources. This assertion is FALSE. Obama and Clinton are tied in Indiana (RealClear Politics) and Obama is 11 points ahead in N. Carolina (RealClear Poltiics), AND Obama is still ahead nationally by 10 points overall (same source).

Drudge ran a headline most of the day which said that Obama only needs another 295. The most conservative projections assume Obama will win atleast 210 delegates in the coming contests. That leaves 85 superdelegates to go. She will needs many, many more than he.

Guess what..... Drudge is right !!! Actually, at this point Obama only needs 287 more delegates to win the nomination. By conservative estimates, at the end of all the primaries to come, he will only need LESS THAN 100 more elected delegates to win.
THIS MEANS that he only needs to win 1/3 of the endorsements of the superdelegates who haven't endorsed anyone yet !!

NOW COMES THE REALLY INTERESTING PART..... since Feb. 5th, Obama has gotten 97 superdelegate endorsements. In this same time period, Clinton has gotten 17 superdelegate endorsements, BUT, 12 of these 17 have switched to Obama !!! WHICH MEANS that Clinton has really only gotten 5 superdelegate endorsements since Feb. 5 !!!

Any questions on who will win the nomination, folks??

In the start of this campaign, I was worried that Hillary would be ok if she got the nomination, but I felt the GOP wanted her too run. However when she started turning on her own party and kissing Fox New's ass saying they were the only fair news agancy out thier, The same news agency that has slammed her and her husband for years let alone the Democratic party and when she started attacking her fellow democrats saying Obama was not good enough to be president only her and McCain were, then I realized she did not care about the party, she only cared about herself. She drew first Blood. She continues to draw blood. I can not in good faith vote for anyone who appears to be going too far right. To me she is a DINO. Democrat In Name Only. We were all blind to Bill and Hillary in the 90's with this NAFTA thing and The Welfare Act. Just those two items cost people jobs and forced people to starve who could'nt afford it. Wake up people. She is using you and nothing will ever change. I am A Proud Democrat. I Have Always Been a Democrat. 47 years, Hillary is lying to all of you. We have to break this dynasty. Please, pay attention. Well said. I supported Clinton and donated to both of his campaigns, and he turned out to be the biggest disappointed in a president in my lifetime (77 years old).

He and Hillary are so desperate to win this election that one gets the feeling they would sell Chelsea if it would guarantee a win.

It's pathetic, and I hope the people of N Carolina and Indiana realize that there is no possibility of major change under Hillary, because she is tied to that old Clinton Centrist group -- a bunch of wanna-be Republicans who can't stop kissing corporate butt. We live in Super Radical Right Wing Orange County, Ca., and there are a lot of Republicans here who think Bill Clinton was a pretty good Republican as president.

This is what happens to Obama's Superdelegates when they are attacked, no matter where they are from. We do not ignore our redstate candidates. We do not pick and choose who is important based upon where we will win. We see the value in every state in this nation, and we have the back of every Democrat in each one. That's the Democratic Party we represent. That is the Change that we are bringing to this country in November. We are all Democrats, and we all have the same goals. If one of us is under fire, we are all under fire.

Let us never forget that."

The Super Delegates like the rest of us are fed up with Clinton's despicable tactics. The latest being the Robo-calls from the Women's Vote to confuse African American voters in NC. The leadership team on the WVWV is a who's who of Clinton supporters including Maggie Williams. These robo-calls use blocked caller ID, ficticious names and are illegal. The matter is being invested by the Attorney General of NC.
Clinton's tactics will make Bush and Rove proud.

After all, much of our electorate that loves our country is going to be very careful in giving the keys to that box with the nuclear code- we will ONLY give it to some one that loves our country as much as we do. Thanks for the link, it's a very informative video. Whatever will she try next? I think Fineman's suggestion that we might soon see her driving an 18 wheeler, was a riot. And we just might! And Olberman's litle dig about how the Clinton campaign 'checks its shame at the door, was spot on.

what a joke. she looked as clueless as bush sr. at the supermarket. obama's gotta get an add out that shows her talking about how she doesn't need to buy gas because of the secret service. must be nice. of course, i'm sure that 109 mill also assures you of never having to pump your own gas again. that's for the blue collar workers she understands "so well." lol.

I don't know how I'd survive the "spin cycle" without Countdown, the Daily Show, and the Colbert Report. How ironic that we have to turn to a sports commentator and comedians for truth.

Superdelegates have already been reported to have changed allegiances from Hillary to Obama, so what does a commitment mean to these people anyway? And why are any of them still undecided? Don't they have a brain? They are like the numbnuts undecided voters before the last presidential election that the TV news teams were so desperate to interview. As election day got closer, the interviewees got dumber and dumber. Who is undecided the day before an election except a complete frickin' clueless moron? And why do we want to see them scratching their asses on national TV?
