WASHINGTON — Barack Obama is closing in on Democratic presidential rival Hillary Rodham Clinton's advantage among superdelegates, building on his lead in the primary race even as he faces troubled times.

Party leaders are encouraging superdelegates to pick a side by late June to prevent the fight from going to the national convention in August, and it seems some are listening as the race enters its final five weeks of voting.

Chelsea Clinton got a superdelegate for her mom while campaigning in Puerto Rico on Wednesday, just as Obama press secretary Bill Burton sent out a statement announcing the support of Rep. Lois Capps. The statement didn't mention the personal connection _ Capps is Burton's mother-in-law.

Clinton had a big jump start among superdelegates, many of whom have ties to the Clintons and backed her candidacy early on. But most of the superdelegates taking sides recently have gone for Obama, who has won more state contests.

Obama trails Clinton by just 21 superdelegates, 243-264, cutting her lead in half in less than two months. This week, he picked up seven delegates to her four.

The superdelegate chase is a key piece of good news for Obama in what has been a bad week. The Illinois senator is coming off a big loss in Pennsylvania, steeped in controversy surrounding his outspoken former pastor while Clinton fares better against Republican likely nominee John McCain in the latest Associated Press-Ipsos poll.

But the problems aren't stopping his ability to win support from superdelegates who are likely to cast the deciding votes in the Democratic race.

Rep. Bruce Braley of Iowa said he decided to endorse Obama even though his former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, has been creating waves by making controversial statements and suggesting that Obama secretly agrees with him. Obama denounced Wright in a news conference Tuesday and said the pastor does not speak for him.

"That's been one of the most frustrating things about this prolonged campaign, is we seemed to have gotten away from the critical issues that started this campaign during the Iowa caucuses and now it's more about the side spectacle than the issues that voters really care about," Braley said. "I'm confident that he has taken this issue head-on. He has addressed it in a thoughtful and enlightened way."

Superdelegates are nearly 800 elected leaders and Democratic party officials who aren't bound by the outcome of state contests and can cast their ballot for any candidate at the national convention. They are especially valuable in this race since neither Clinton nor Obama can get enough delegates to win the nomination through the primaries and caucuses held across the country.

Obama now leads in the delegate count overall 1731.5 to 1598.5 for Clinton. A candidate needs 2,025 delegates to win the nomination. About 230 superdelegates remain undecided, and about 60 more will be selected at state party conventions and meetings throughout the spring.

Clinton had stalled in drawing their support as Obama won more states than she, but Clinton won Pennsylvania last week and has been able to announce a new supporter every day this week _ two on Wednesday.

The Clinton campaign said Luisette Cabanas, vice chair of the Democratic Committee in Puerto Rico, came on board while the candidate's daughter Chelsea was campaigning on the island. Cabanas cited Clinton's policies, especially on health care, as "the best by far of any candidate in history."

"Today I endorse Hillary Clinton for president because of her strong win in Pennsylvania," Cabanas said in a statement. "She has shown a firm conviction and the character needed to lead the nation."

Capps said it wasn't an easy decision to pick between Obama and Clinton. She has family ties to both candidates _ Obama's spokesman is married to her daughter, Laura Burton Capps, who also worked in the Clinton White House.

Lois Capps filled the congressional seat held by her late husband, Walter Capps, when he died suddenly 10 years ago. Bill Clinton had campaigned for Walter Capps and presided over his congressional memorial service.

Capps said Hillary Clinton would be a great president and fill a dream for those who have fought for women's rights. But she said Obama's call for a change in Washington was the most important factor in winning her support.

"Walter once said that 'we are strongest as people when we are directed by that which unites us, rather than giving into the fears, suspicions, innuendoes and paranoias that divide,'" she said in a statement. "For years I have been waiting for a president that speaks to that vision. I believe Barack Obama may very well be that rare leader."

Two of the most important superdelegates to sign on this week come from the states that vote next _ North Carolina and Indiana, which hold primaries on May 6 and are the largest states left to vote. Obama got the support of Rep. Baron Hill of Indiana, while Clinton won the backing of North Carolina Gov. Mike Easley even though Obama is expected to win the state.

I've always wondered why people support Hillary when she lies to their faces constantly. I now see it's more than that. I believe they see her as a fighter. I'm getting a bit tired of Obama's "too cool for school" attitude. I understand that he's trying to run a different campaign and I appreciate that, but most Americans don't. Hillary gives the impression that she will fight and get bruised for the issues that concern Americans, and Obama seems like he won't even step out the house if his shirt isn't ironed. After what happened to Kerry, many dems wonder if Obama is too weak to stand up to these attacks. He still can't get passed Rev.Wright.
Obama needs to understand that his approach brought him alot of new and loyal supporters but we are not enough. He needs to start targeting the groups he's having trouble with, and don't just think they will come to him if he's the nominee. He got hammered for going on FOX but i think thats a good move. Most people who watch MSNBC already support dems, he needs to reach a new audience. Most of Obama's loyal supports will stay with him, so enough with the rally's and focus on town halls.

Obama needs to win IN and NC so these super delegates can publicly support him, and we could start working on the GE.

A couple points. I think you're caught up in the media circus. The nomination has been over for a while. Obama really does only have to coast to the finish. Now, I realize, at the moment, it doesn't seem like a great strategy to play prevent defense, but this isn't football. He needs to try to keep Hillary supporters, keep his central message that he ISN'T a typical politician (fighting it out with Hillary is what he's been suckered into too much as it is) and, all the while, somehow deal with the media, the GOP and a bitter Clinton machine in its death throes.

He's threading the needle very nicely. Just take a deep breath, look at all the numbers and don't pay attention to the pundits.

I'm not saying attack Hillary because i understand her voters get their feelings hurt. But i saw him struggle on the Wright issue during the last debate, and that concerned me. I spoke to people who support Hillary and that was the generally response i got. They believe he is not tough enough and the Repubs will walk over him like they did to Kerry. Obama is in a position where if he tries to stay above all this then he's seen as too weak, and if he engages, he is another politician. Hillary is trying her best to destroy Obama and i honestly believe its because she wants him to lose, so she can run again in 2012. He needs to ignore her and focus on McCain.

Obama cuts into Clinton's SD lead by half in 2 months. Great !

This week he picks up 7 to her 4 !!

To celebrate that news I'm volunteering for his phone bank again this weekend.

I counted about 30 people there last Sat.

I'm going to ask the woman in charge what the head count was and how many this weekend.

It was fun and I'm looking forward to doing it again.

Good question.
She was at the bottom of my list from the beginning of this election when we had nine or ten candidates. But that was mainly because of her consistent support for the NeoCons.

I had Obama at #4.

However, had Obama given his "race relations" speech back then, I would have ranked him #1 from the beginning.

Thank you for saying that, it was so hard for me to boast about him, when so many others here with far more political experience than I. Had chosen other candidates. I knew over a year ago, catching some of his obscure speeches on C-Span, that he was on to something and there's more depth to him as you get to know him. I was skeptical too, I heard the buzz about him from the 2004 convention, and brushed that off as more party propaganda BS.

I was pleasantly surprised.

Obama can win a trifecta, Guam then IN and NC. Whether he wins all three or just two, the ridiculous storyline about Hillary having a renewed chance to beat him or win the 98% of the remaining undecided delegates she would need to win will be put to rest.

If we could only devise a way to prevent evil cross voting, hmm something like if you change your party, then you have to wait until after the presidential election to switch back. As we know they could still vote for Mc in November but the penality would be that these evil doers could not vote the GOP ticket for downstream candidates in many states, I bet that would go a long ways to resolving the foolishness. Meanwhile we knew that clintons would win PA so I am at a lost as to how the msm could tout that as a huge win. It would be interesting to see how many GOPer are setting her up for a fall.
I hope BHO goes to Martintown IN to tell them to could vote their hopes.

Too bad Hillary aligned herself with the likes of Lieberman and voted for the Iraq War and for the Lieberman bill to invade Iran. Pardon those of us who have a difficult time believing that she is Democratic.

She and McCain are pretty much the same. The stupid gas tax idea they both agree on is a perfect example. What a patronizing political move. More of the same - not taking action on the real problems, just throwing a little money at them.

There's no doubt the Republicans want Hillary -- because they will have a big surprise to announce that will surely bury her: BILL'S AFFAIR WITH ANOTHER WOMAN SINCE HE LEFT THE WHITE HOUSE. They definitely have the goods (Rupert Murdoch has been collecting this information for several months now) and will use it to sink Hillary against McCain. Hillary will respond that the affair doesn't matter; that's their private business. But the American public will care -- because we don't want to live through anymore dysfunctional Clinton family b.s. in the White House.

I don't think another affair on the part of Bill will be enough to sink Hillary. If that's all the republicans have, they're in trouble. She would probably get a large sympathy vote. It's true that people don't want, as you say, to live through any more dysfunctional Clinton b.s. in the White House---but unless the woman (does she even exist?) is somehow extraordinary---the wife of a senator or something, it wouldn't matter that much. I think the republicans will have much darker stuff than that, and it really will have to be more about Hillary than Bill.

I defintely don't think Sen. Obama shares Rev. wright's views on race
and his other ridiculous positions about US government.
Sen. Obama's speech was uplifting and trying to elevate
the discussion and Rev. Wright was doing just the opposite.
That's all I need to know to put this issue to rest.

The media has completely forgotten or lost interest
in covering the real issues like economy, jobs or foreign policy,

If they are covering rev. Wright because of Sen. Obama's judgement
to sit in the church for 20 years or they think he is not
completely honest about his relationship with the pastor ie.
judgement and honesty are important for commander-in-chief,
let's look at Sen. Clinton.

-Her judgement call on the Iraq vote that had much bigger
impact for the American people
-Her honesty for being under sniper fire in Bosnia, her contribution to
bringing peace to Northern Ireland
-She didn't seem to be bothered about disfranchising Michigan
and Florida voters until early this year.
-Not for gas tax holiday in 2000 when she was running for
New York but now she is.
-Her judgement to employ Penn as a senior advisor who was also
advisiong columbian ambassodor how to pass a free-trade pact with America
that Clinton opposes

Super Delegates,

Make your decision quickly so we can get past
this nonsense coverage on media.

I thought the idea behind super delegates was that they were not to vote until the convention so that in case we picked a candidate that could not win in the general election the super delegates to put in whomever they felt had the best chance of winning. For a while now I had the feeling that the media was picking our candidate for us and were picking someone whom they felt they could beat. It seems that the media knew all along about Obama's minister and they never came out with it until he is almost our candidate. I ask why??? Found two interesting articles. One tackles this subject, so I am not the only person to think so. What bothers me now is, what can we do at this late stage except watch our chances of the white house go up in smoke again.

You have been overwhelmed by wishful thinking. Wait until November to see what Congress is going to look like. I live in Dennis Hastert's district, as red a district as you can get, and his hand picked successor was routed by an upstart Democrat 53%-47%. Your party has earned its return to minority status.

Don't you recognize a phony when you see one? Reverend Wright said as much about Obama. He's a politician!

Really pathetic. Even MSNBC and CNN pundits had to admit that the people want to talk about issues not Wright. This is America not some fascist country where you are judged based on another's actions. Give it rest. Wright is NOT ENOUGH to defeat Sen. Obama. Ya got anything else?

We need a new Hillary whopper. I miss Hillary's whoppers. That Bosnia sniper thing was cool.

She was running across the tarmac, with her head down (because she's so tall), and bullets flying everywhere!

Man that was cool.

The flag pin deflected bullets, didn't it?

Saved her life. And the deflected bullet hit a terrist, another Amreican without a flag pin.

Well now thanks to someone who has endorsed Hillary she has testicular fortitude.

She is now running her campaign like she's a coal miner's daughter. The woman who has been part of the problem with big American corporations is now a populist. Lying about single events is not big enough for her anymore now she is lying about who she is.

There is a pretty big whopper discovered today. The source of the mysterious Robo calls which have recently come to light in North Carolina is a non profit org from Washington, DC which has spread misleading voter information and sown confusion and frustration among North Carolina residents. There have been thousands of complaints in 11 states regarding the same tactics. Clinton's campaign mgr, Maggie Williams is on the board. Other Clinton campaign members and supporters are on board as well, including John Podesta:
