WASHINGTON — Barack Obama is closing in on Democratic presidential rival Hillary Rodham Clinton's advantage among superdelegates, building on his lead in the primary race even as he faces troubled times.

Party leaders are encouraging superdelegates to pick a side by late June to prevent the fight from going to the national convention in August, and it seems some are listening as the race enters its final five weeks of voting.

Chelsea Clinton got a superdelegate for her mom while campaigning in Puerto Rico on Wednesday, just as Obama press secretary Bill Burton sent out a statement announcing the support of Rep. Lois Capps. The statement didn't mention the personal connection _ Capps is Burton's mother-in-law.

Clinton had a big jump start among superdelegates, many of whom have ties to the Clintons and backed her candidacy early on. But most of the superdelegates taking sides recently have gone for Obama, who has won more state contests.

Obama trails Clinton by just 21 superdelegates, 243-264, cutting her lead in half in less than two months. This week, he picked up seven delegates to her four.

The superdelegate chase is a key piece of good news for Obama in what has been a bad week. The Illinois senator is coming off a big loss in Pennsylvania, steeped in controversy surrounding his outspoken former pastor while Clinton fares better against Republican likely nominee John McCain in the latest Associated Press-Ipsos poll.

But the problems aren't stopping his ability to win support from superdelegates who are likely to cast the deciding votes in the Democratic race.

Rep. Bruce Braley of Iowa said he decided to endorse Obama even though his former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, has been creating waves by making controversial statements and suggesting that Obama secretly agrees with him. Obama denounced Wright in a news conference Tuesday and said the pastor does not speak for him.

Story continues below

"That's been one of the most frustrating things about this prolonged campaign, is we seemed to have gotten away from the critical issues that started this campaign during the Iowa caucuses and now it's more about the side spectacle than the issues that voters really care about," Braley said. "I'm confident that he has taken this issue head-on. He has addressed it in a thoughtful and enlightened way."

Superdelegates are nearly 800 elected leaders and Democratic party officials who aren't bound by the outcome of state contests and can cast their ballot for any candidate at the national convention. They are especially valuable in this race since neither Clinton nor Obama can get enough delegates to win the nomination through the primaries and caucuses held across the country.

Obama now leads in the delegate count overall 1731.5 to 1598.5 for Clinton. A candidate needs 2,025 delegates to win the nomination. About 230 superdelegates remain undecided, and about 60 more will be selected at state party conventions and meetings throughout the spring.

Clinton had stalled in drawing their support as Obama won more states than she, but Clinton won Pennsylvania last week and has been able to announce a new supporter every day this week _ two on Wednesday.

The Clinton campaign said Luisette Cabanas, vice chair of the Democratic Committee in Puerto Rico, came on board while the candidate's daughter Chelsea was campaigning on the island. Cabanas cited Clinton's policies, especially on health care, as "the best by far of any candidate in history."

"Today I endorse Hillary Clinton for president because of her strong win in Pennsylvania," Cabanas said in a statement. "She has shown a firm conviction and the character needed to lead the nation."

Capps said it wasn't an easy decision to pick between Obama and Clinton. She has family ties to both candidates _ Obama's spokesman is married to her daughter, Laura Burton Capps, who also worked in the Clinton White House.

Lois Capps filled the congressional seat held by her late husband, Walter Capps, when he died suddenly 10 years ago. Bill Clinton had campaigned for Walter Capps and presided over his congressional memorial service.

Capps said Hillary Clinton would be a great president and fill a dream for those who have fought for women's rights. But she said Obama's call for a change in Washington was the most important factor in winning her support.

"Walter once said that 'we are strongest as people when we are directed by that which unites us, rather than giving into the fears, suspicions, innuendoes and paranoias that divide,'" she said in a statement. "For years I have been waiting for a president that speaks to that vision. I believe Barack Obama may very well be that rare leader."

Two of the most important superdelegates to sign on this week come from the states that vote next _ North Carolina and Indiana, which hold primaries on May 6 and are the largest states left to vote. Obama got the support of Rep. Baron Hill of Indiana, while Clinton won the backing of North Carolina Gov. Mike Easley even though Obama is expected to win the state.

I get paid tomorrow gonna drop the Obama's some cash too....

Gotta a lil extra for him since were getting those so called "stimulus checks"...think i may drop a C-note on him...Oh and i'm not maxed out of donations like most of Hillary's supporters you know we "Obam Cultist" know how to fund a winning campaign.

Unlike Hillary who lied about making 10 mill in two days only to find out that she was 15 mill in debt...and she wants to run this Country...pleasssee~~~!@@!

Truthfighter1: Well, let's hope all those rich elitist donations Obama gets from his supporters pays off this time.

I mean, I hope he doesn't have to outspend Hillary 3 to 1, and spend like 13.5 million in Indiana,

AND STILL LOSE.

That would be a waste of the wonderful, educated, and rich dude segment of the Dem party.

Rich and elitist like me? A 52 year old white male downsized former paper mill worker making less than $30,000 is considered a rich dude now?

Well ain't I lucky.

BTW Obama's almost 1.5 million individual donors average about $110 per.
Hardly elitist. We send him the money with the intention that he spend it to win the nomination and election. We don't consider it wasted at all.

I intentionally watched the evening news on the networks to see how they were reporting the latest Wright kerfuffle.

Much to the Clintonistas' horror, THEY WEREN'T!

Instead, two of the networks had pieces on the latest Hillary deception about Magnaquench:

Sorry Hilbots. The news cycle has ended.

Politicians and superdelegates who endorse Obama now that it's clear what Rev. Wright stands for are being shortsighted. I won't be surprised if facts do come out that Obama has heard the speeches or words he denied he heard until now, they'll be held accountable for having endorsed a FRAUD. Their judgments would be questioned.

Sort of like how Clinton said Barack was electable on the ABC debate. When the first tape recording come out that says she actually thinks the opposite are you going to call her a fraud too?

Obama is a FRAUD because he has presented himself for what he is NOT. He claimed he is a different kind of politician and a uniter. It was easy to believe him when little was known about him and he spoke so eloquently about himself.
Now, he's exposed. He lied and blamed his staff time and time again whenever he was cornered.
His speech in Philly was anything but a political speech. He's the last person in the US to ask us to have a dialogue on race (as he did in Philly), when clearly he sat there for 20 years listening to Wright and did nothing.
He lied about his staff meeting with the Canadians on Nafta and only relented and spoke the truth when he was cornered with the meeting memo. He admitted it after blaming his staff. This is a pattern on Obama as we have seen.
Obama doesn't look the same now to the voters eyes after he has been exposed. His luster has been tarnished and he looks just like any of the lying and opportunistic politician out there. Wright further exposed his lack of credibility.
He's a fraud and the charade has got to stop.

He's fighting with Rev. Wright. They hate one another and the madcap pastor probably isn't done insulting Obama. The more Wright insults Obama, the better it is for Obama. Are you betting Rev. Wright and his huge ego are going to sit back and let Obama make him out to be a fool?

This episode, in and of itself, is demonstrative of how good a politician Obama really is. People got to know and hate Wright. So much so, Hillary and McCain were trying to use guilt by association with the guy to deep six Obama's campaign. Now, Obama gets to duke it out in the national media with the clown.

Somewhere yesterday Karl Rove and James Carville realized just how good Obama is.

Your post is very misleading. What exactly does Reverend Wright stand for that the super delegates are being shortsighted about? The super delegates aren't making their decisions based on soundbites, as you apparently have; nor will they confuse Reverend Wright with Senator Obama, as you apparently also have. Reverend Wright said some things that were offensive, most of which have been explained and even affirmed by most intelligent Americans, including the super delegates. Those statements that have been left unexplained, which Senator Obama recently renounced, are HIS statements, not Senator Obama's. The super delegates realize this also. Overall, Reverend Wright is seen by most open-minded Americans as a brilliant theologian and historian who stands for truth and reconciliation of all people, black and white, in spite of the one or two offensive statements he made and the embarrassment to Senator Obama. The super delegates, who know the integrity of Senator Obama's character, are not judging him by what someone else said; they are judging him by who and what they know him to be.

Let me tell ya about Rev. Wright, he has portrayed himself as a loon intentionally or non-intentionally either way, the Majority of Americans are going to shrug him off when we get to the GE and the real issues come up and the NeoCons can't do anything but bring up Wright. Sorry but that story is going to be so played out thanks to FOX news that no one will real care, at least those with half a brain.

What the media did to try and take down Obama will backfire, i promise you. This is not to say that Obama shouldn't be vetted but to go after his pastor or any pastor in such a way the media did, there will sure to be consequences for that. It was a double standard, if they would've at least started looking into the other two candidates Pastors then it would've been more balance, but anyone can tell that since that ABC debate it's been all out attacks on Obama.

One thing people seem to forget: IL. Oh, but that's the only big state Obama's won. The thing is, Hillary probably couldn't win IL after this campaign if she managed to steal it from him. You think Ms. Clinton is bringing it home without IL's 21 electors (270 needed to win)? McCain is popular here as a moderate. Hillary would turn the GOP out in droves too.

Umm, yes, I do. Do tell the people of the nation who craptastic Dem Gov was running against? Remember? Judy Bar Topinka? The woman gave a speech at my friends law school graduation. She brought a plastic cup with a straw to the dais and proceeded to tell the law school graduates how amazing their four years had been. Yes she did. (In case you don't know, law school is 3 years.) I think she also wore drapery for clothing.

The state GOP machine has imploded, no doubt. (And good riddance.) But don't confuse that with a lock for Hillary. Obama won the Dem nomination here by about 650,000 votes. Obama supporters here in IL would not be happy if Hillary slimed her way to victory. The African American vote would be drastically reduced. And, McCain is viewed as a moderate.

Hillary has big trouble winning IL in the very unlikely event she wins the nomination.

As an Illinoian, I must confess that any Democrat could in fact win Illinois ... except Hillary! The largest Democratic base in Illinois is Chicago and its south suburbs, and Hillary threw that base away when she threw the kitchen sink! The surrounding cities and suburbs are predominately Republican. The 50% that Governor Blagoyevich received came from the very base that Hillary would lose if she is the nominee. It would be her history-making event!

We're entering a really fascinating point in this election. The Dems are doing a Howard Dean 2004 to Obama. This is the point where the presumptive nominee is unceremoniously dumped for the "electable" candidate.

The parallels with 2004 are striking:

1. The Dems assume a quick and easy victory against a relatively weak Repub contender.

2. Massive media support annoints a newcomer who is previously unknown. (Dean & Obama).

3. That newcomer is a fiery orator and can whip any crowd into a mad frenzy. He is a rock star to young, naive voters. He brings Hope.

4. As the convention approaches, Dems remind themselves that they need a candidate that can win over the country, not just other Dems.

5. The newcomer is more closely examined. Bad news. He is just like everybody else.

6. Emotions must be set aside with the race just around the corner. The candidate that Dems really wanted in their hearts is abandoned for the less attractive but more electable Plan B choice (Kerry & Hillary).

7. And since the "electable" candidate is the Dems' Plan B, he/she fares accordingly in the general.

8. Thus, the mainstream media unwittingly caused disaster to the Democrats. They artificially inflated a candidate that was not ready for prime time. This created division within the Dem party which could not stand behind a single, strong candidate.

9. In November, the Republican candidate wins, without oratorial skills, good looks or promises of "hope". He does, however, have experience in

This would have been true if Obama wasn't like the effing Bismark. He's won 2/3rds of the Democratic races. While I agree the media is fueling this race idea and Obama is positive, Obama is no Howard Dean. Obama is far more cool and calm.

Don't get me wrong, they've tried to sink him, he's just too good. He's like teflon. Likable, speaks to moderates, energizes the base, is right on the issues (antiwar notably) and can independently finance himself. He isn't a rock star. He's bigger than a rock star and he's the next President. Let's hope he steps boldly once he's at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

I don't doubt you're sincere, but you really are out of touch. Hillary has always been unelectable. So many big name Dems felt that way, they broke away from the Clintons despite personal friendships. Who did they endorse? Obama.

Obama wouldn't be here if not for HIllary. He never would have gotten the initial funding he needed. Hillary is radioactive.

Now, you how some things you think you know and things you know with a certainty in your brain to your gut? Well, I think I know Obama will win in the fall, I've been pretty damn certain he'd be the Dem nominee since Wisconsin. But, admittedly, I could be wrong. However, I'd bet everything I own and then some that Hillary can't win a General election. And I would have told you that before her suicidal campaign that's risking a rift in the Dem party.

I respect that many disagree, but the inevitable one has lost 2/3rds of the Democratic contests. She's not even winning in her own party and yet you somehow have bought this notion she's a strong candidate. I mean it's foolish, really. (Not calling you foolish, btw.)

I just thought you sounded like a Republican male. Otherwise, you seem deathly afraid about what others might think of your candidate. You gotta have strong convictions if you are finally fed up with a Democratic candidate who tries to chase a "center" that constantly moves toward the right. The time has long since past to have a candidate who feels he or she must kowtow to the right. Let them come to him or her, or let them wither.

Michael Moore is a REPUBLICAN boogey-man! Democrats do not see Michael Moore as the "kiss of death," and hard-core Republicans who hate Michael Moore weren't going to vote for Senator Obama anyway!

Who is the "vital center of America?" Older, traditional "blue-collar" white people who are still living in the past and would never vote for a black man, or women who are willing to put any woman in the white house? There are a lot of other Americans who are just as important to the Democratic Party, and whose votes will carry Senator Obama to the White House. To the contrary, Senator Clinton's base will be insufficient to propel her to victory in the general, especially against the GOP assault which we haven't even seen yet. However, they've already used their best weapons against Senator Obama, and so far they haven't been able to bring him down!

He does have experience in? Well, it doesn't matter. The Democratic Party is destined for failure. A job well done.

That's right Obama keep ya' head up, keep ya eyes on the prize.
Brush all the haters off ya' shoulders...take this quote with you on the way to the nomination..

Just about anyone who follows politics closely knows,
the farther afield from which the slander come, the
more it names who is the one to beat.

"First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win."

Almost eight years of the 'first-twins', Jenna and Barbara Bush. Oh gawd, please not four or possibly eight years of Chelsea Clinton.

Right, Chelsea Clinton is such a hardship to have to look at. And bull dog Michele Obama, could turn anyone to stone, that 's for sure.

Yeah, she is a real pleasant person. So warm.

I have spent quite a length of time looking at all the candidates and their present and former acquaintances. McCain and his participation in the Keaton scandal and more recently Rev. Hagge and the openly racist Bob Jones come readily to mind, Hillary and Hsu who went to prison for illegal fund raising to just name one. And if you care examine President Bush and his relationship with Kenny Boy Lay to the Ben Ladens. While I am aware that Hillary's eruptions will depends on whether she ever looks convincing enough to be the nominee, I am getting to point where I am thinking despite my continued optimism there comes a time in certain situations when race matters. And this is one of them. Obama will overcome but for now he has to remember who he is and that while he is fighting to change it he is still doomed to work twice as hard. Hopefully he will be strong enough to prevail and so his children and mine wont have to face this challenge not even in its most subtle form.
