NEW YORK — After three decades of keeping mum, Barbara Walters now says she had a past affair with married U.S. Senator Edward Brooke, whom she remembers as "exciting" and "brilliant."

Appearing on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" scheduled to air Tuesday, Walters shares details of her relationship with Brooke that lasted several years in the 1970s, according to a transcript of the show provided to The Associated Press.

A moderate Republican from Massachusetts who took office in 1967, Brooke was the first African-American to be popularly elected to the Senate. Both he and Walters knew that public knowledge of their affair could have ruined his career as well as hers, Walters says.

At the time, the twice-divorced Walters was a rising star in TV news and co-host of NBC's "Today" show, but would soon jump to ABC News, where she has enjoyed unrivaled success. Her affair with Brooke, which never before came to light, had ended before he lost his bid for a third term in 1978.

Brooke later divorced, and has since remarried. Calls to a listing for Brooke in Miami by The Associated Press were not immediately returned Thursday.

Walters is the guest of Oprah Winfrey to discuss her new memoir, "Audition," which covers her long career in television, as well as her off-camera life. On "Oprah," Walters recounts a phone call from a friend who urged her to stop seeing Brooke.

"He said, 'This is going to come out. This is going to ruin your career,'" then reminded her that Brooke was up for re-election a year later. "'This is going to ruin him. You've got to break this off.'"

Winfrey asks Walters if she was in love.

Story continues below

"I was certainly _ I don't know _ I was certainly infatuated."

"Infatuated."

"I was certainly involved," Walters says. "He was exciting. He was brilliant. It was exciting times in Washington."

Also during the program, Walters chokes up while describing the struggles of her older sister Jackie, who was mentally retarded. Walters confesses that, as a child, she sometimes felt embarrassed by Jackie.

"She stuttered terribly. People made fun of her. People made fun of me," Walters says. "I didn't bring friends home. I felt terribly guilty because she was very loving and I didn't always feel that way."

Jackie Walters died in 1985 of ovarian cancer.

"When I think of her, because she was beautiful and loving and all of that, it makes me cry."

Brooke served two full terms from 1967 to 1979, taking on the populist causes of low-income housing, increasing the minimum wage and mass transit. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004, an honor only 21 U.S. senators have received.

Just in case the slimey subhumans that home schooled you didn't teach you this, your comment managed to be racist, ageist, and unintelligent all at the same time. If you are lucky, you might just live as long as BW then we will see how you feel about it. But given your obnoxious and stupid comment you will probably never get to have any real experiences in life, just the same old pre-programmed kind they show on Jerry Springer.

You know it is really sad when men or women can't accept their age. The more I watch the view the less I like BW. She did appear respectable at one time. But now she is like mccain, an old man that should be at home torturing his family but instead they have to impose their nonsense on us. I guess I saw a glimpse of the real BW by the way she handle the thing with Star Jones. Keep in mind I never cared for Star Jones and was more than OK with her being gone but BW and bill gadie wanted this women to tell a stupid lie about being fired and then they had the nerve to get mad when she didn't go alone with it . If you fired her so what, people get fired everyday for being a lot less irritating than Star Jones. But why you got to be so nasty about it? BW is talking about going with a married man whom I assume ex is still living. Seem like a crappy thing to do. My, my how low can Americans go, even the woman who pretended to have so much class wasn't satisfied with that being her legacy. She blows it off just so that she can get a little attention. The only attention she is going to get is being the butt of many, many jokes. Take my advice BW, RETIRE before you sink any lower.

I guess you're planning on killing yourself before you reach, say 70. No need in having your children or other relatives take care of you...do society a favor and retirement is not good enough, sooner or later you'll get smelly and rot in some nursing home. On Barbara's worst day, she has more class than you on your best day...a little touch of Judge Judy

She had the affair. it's over and should be kept in the past.

Confession may be good for the soul and good for book sales, but it's not good for the other folks involved. The responsible, adult thing for Ms. Walters was not to write about the affair and not to talk about it.

This is self-serving behavior of an older woman who knows right from wrong. She chose to do wrong because the marketplace will reward her with attention. Just because it's a legal thing to do, does not mean it's the right thing to do. It's not ethical at all.

If she feels her affair with Senator Brooke was so momentous that it changed our history, then she could write a monograph about it and then give the written materials and supporting documentation to the law firm handling her will. The law firm could be directed not to release it all until after Senator Brooke and his wife have passed away. The law firm could also be directed to gift the material to a university history department.

Senator Brooke is not longer married to the woman he had the affair on. Did you not read the article?

I wish she hadn't gone public with this. But I also don't like her being treated so badly for doing so. Like it or not, she and Brooke are both public figures, and this does 'flesh out', if you'll pardon the expression, a bit of history in a very interesting way. They both entered into an affair, knowing it could come out and be difficult if it did. Neither has anything professionally at stake any longer. We also don't know but what he was advised about or even gave permission for the disclosure.

Who needed this information? It sure is not a book I would buy. If she is appearing on Oprah, it will be a best seller. overnight.

I often judge a celebrity by what those with opposite agendas and seemingly nothing in common say.

I take you back to Don Imus' old program that was simulcast on MSNBC.

Say what you will about Imus. But not speaking with total candor is is not one of his shortcommings - of which there are many.

Barbara's name came up one morning. He made it quite clear that he had the utmost respect for her as an honest person with many admiring friends in New York.

That got my attention along with being shown respect when appearing on Bill O'Reilly's slugfest.

The ratio of those who speak well of her versus those who do not is extraordinary.
