I Like ItI Don’t Like It

NEW YORK — Mayor Michael Bloomberg called a summer-long suspension of the gas tax favored by Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton and Republican John McCain a dumb idea.

The New York mayor, who flirted with the idea of an independent presidential bid, praised Democrat Barack Obama for opposing the plan to suspend the 18.4 cent federal gas tax and 24.2 cent diesel tax during the peak driving months of the summer.

All three candidates covet Bloomberg's endorsement. The mayor has spoken highly of Obama and McCain in introducing the two at recent events in New York.

Speaking to reporters at City Hall, Bloomberg said of the gas tax holiday, "It's about the dumbest thing I've heard in an awful long time, from an economic point of view. We're trying to discourage people from driving and we're trying to end our energy dependence ... and we're trying to have more money to build infrastructure."

He cited those three reasons for opposing the gas tax holiday favored by McCain and Clinton. Obama has said the savings would not be significant for the average individual, and Bloomberg agreed.

"The 30 bucks is not going to change anybody's lifestyle," he said. "The billions of dollars that we would otherwise have in tax revenues can make a big difference as to what kind of a world we leave our children."

The billionaire mayor said in February that he had decided not to run for president but has dangled the possibility of his endorsement. The Democrat-turned-Republican-turned-independent has ties to all three candidates.

Are Clinton supporters as dumb as Bush supporters?

I awakened from the Clinton dream weeks ago and would not vote for her if my life depended on it!

Think about this.

Two major candidates left standing.
McCrazy and Sister Yoda.

Your life may indeed depend on keeping McCrazy out of the White House.

Pandering for votes is offensive. It is also of course one of our country's most revered political traditions.
But at the end of the day, usually the lesser of two disappointments (which in fact is the only choice you get in the world of humans) is better than the alternative.

if she is handed the nomination and we vote for her, we will be endorsing her as the standard bearer of the democratic party. she is the same as mccain... i do not want a republican or democrat in name only representing my party. my vote is sacred. this is not a decision i take lightly, having two sons who will be of draft age during mcsame's term. but at some point, we have to stand on principle. otherwise, we can expect more of the same the next time around.

Your life does depend on it. You are only dumber than Bush supporters since you parrot what BUSH says about the oil price rise. You are so stupid that you STILL believe BUSH! Why is it that Obama voted for a similar tax holiday not once but THREE times when he was in IL Senate?

Obama was probably wrong when he voted for the earlier tax holidays. Now he's not wrong. But Hillary and McCain are STILL WRONG.

It's called learning from your mistakes. ...Which is a foreign concept to McCain and Clinton.

Clinton can never admit she's made a mistake or when she is wrong; in this aspect Clinton is just like George W. Bush. Look at the mess Bush has made does America want another president who will not admit when they are wrong? Hillary will just stay the course on her stupid ass proposals and she continues to call her health insurance plan universal which it is not. Canada and the European countries have universal health care. Hillary's plan is the worse combination of what currently exists in America and a mandatory plan that will garnish the wages of folks who don't buy into the plan.

Bloomberg's objections to a gas tax holiday are one thing. But Barak Obama is only against a gas tax holiday, because McCain and Clinton were for one first. They beat Obama to it, and Obama doesn’t want to look like a follower. The proof is in the pudding. In 2000, as an Illinois state Senator, he voted 3 times for a gas tax holiday of Illinois State gas taxes. Obama's playing old style politics, and his supporters should see that he is fooling them about "A new and different kind of politics".

Also, if you've voted for it 3 times and you see it had no effect on a smaller economy, why should you make it national. THINKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At a State level the tax cut would actually filter down faster and there would be more of a savings for the consumer (the consumer would still not see the entire cut). The expert on Jim Leher New Hour on PBS April 30th said this would not be the case at a national level. The consumer would see little of the tax cut (much less than $30) and it would take months to show up at the tanks. I trust the expert.

Different horse now altogether. It was fine for Illinois. Now the prices are much higher.
We make decisions one day and then learn from it.

Apparently, everyone missed the Karl Rove memo to Obama published this week about going back to congress to push for some--any--bipartisan effort this summer. Now that we are all referring to the McCain-Clinton gas tax holiday push as an effort--whether popular, failed, inefficient, short-sighted, or not--suggests we are all pointing out a bipartisan effort--however nascent--on the part of these two candidates.

“I believe it would be important to get every member of Congress on record,” Clinton told supporters at a rally in southern Indiana. “Do they stand with the hard-pressed Americans who are trying to pay their gas bills at the gas station or do they once again stand with the oil companies?

“I want to know where people stand and I want them to tell us, are they with us or against us when it comes to taking on the oil companies?” she added.

It seems that now Hillary wants to pretend that she is George Bush," with us or against us". How is that fighting personality going to help pass laws? Can anyone say gridlock if she became president?

Everyone! Google Paul vs Clinton and hold on to your shirt with what you read!! I can not believe this is being hidden so well by the media and Clinton supporters claim she has a chance of winning once she is convicted in this case that she is apparently guilty of along with Gov Ed Randell and Former Pres Clinton. This will all be over soon! I know the superdelegates are watching this!

Go Obama 08 Yes We Can!!!!

P.S. If you want to see a video of one of Clinton's top aide in her campaign office called the people of Indiana SHI_! Then check out the video that is what her people really think snakes all of them liers and snakes!!

If it were a hint of this in the Obama Senate run...he would be out of the race. You can elect her but she will be impeached by Feb.

I've read many of the comments. People just think objectively. A gas tax holiday, isn't wise. PERIOD!
Call it what it is...Clinton and McCain are wrong - pandering to the less educated.

Regardless who you support, just think objectively. Have compassion and look at a much bigger picture!

Whatever Ericjack, a gas tax break windfall of $30 over several months in the summer totaling less than a few cents a day WILL CHANGE MY LIFE!!!! No doubt you are some elite richy rich type.
Hillary is an average person like myself and understands how tough it is to fill a gas tank and balance your personal budget.

That is why I'm voting for her! Plus she wears a flag lapel and is for a lot of other inconsequential things that are important to voters like myself.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:07 PM on 05/01/2008

You sound like you would follow Hillary to the moon if she said it was a good idea! How in the heck would $30 whole dollars change anybody's life over several months. There are just 30-31 days in a month pretty much, which equates to just about a dollar a day. What in the hell can you buy for a dollar these days?

Hillary and McCain's proposal sounds old and stale just like they are. You said it yourself "inconsequential things" that are important to you. That's crazy and that is why we can't get anyone decent in office because of people like you who focus on nonsubstantive issues. Lapel pins.... I can't believe you said that; I really can't.

She doesn;t even know how to pump gas, average person my ass. If you think $10 a month for three months will balance your personal budget, hey more power to you. But $10 a month will not help me much. Plus, how do we know the oil companies will actually lower the price of gas. Talk is cheap.

please think hard. she said people can take the money for grocery shoppin. how much can 30 bucks get you? 3 months by the way. remember not everybody drives. what about the lost jobs. do you think the congress would pass the wind fall profits just like that?

people. should always think for the long term.

Someone should tell the 300,000 employees of the Department of Transportation that the loss of tax revenue from 18 cents per gallon is going to cost them their jobs.

The DOT has announced this.
