Aides to Sen. Hillary Clinton defended on Thursday her support for a gas-tax holiday - a proposal that has been roundly criticized by economic and energy experts and derided among pundits as political pandering.

"Senator Clinton realizes there is a problem for consumers that requires both a short term and long term set of solutions," said Howard Wolfson, her chief spokesperson. "In the short term, she has laid out a plan to suspend the tax and have those resources or revenues paid by oil companies as well. In the long term, she has the boldest and most comprehensive plan that will increase fuel efficiency standards... help lawmakers retool their production facilities."

Wolfson said that Clinton would introduce legislation to alleviate the gas tax burden on consumers over the summer by having a windfall tax on oil company profits pick up the tab. He was non-committal as to whether or not the senator would leave the campaign trail and return to Washington to push the legislation.

Aides to Clinton could not, when asked, point to a single non-political expert who supported such a proposal, saying simply that it is a president's prerogative when to take expert advise.

"We believe the presidency requires leadership," said Wolfson. "There are times that a president will take a position that a broad support of quote-unquote experts agree with. And there are times they will take a position that quote-unquote experts do not agree with."

Pressed whether her decision to buck conventional wisdom -- energy analysts say the savings from the tax holiday would be minor and actually lead to an increase in demand for gas and driving -- contrasted with the notion that she has the greatest expertise on the economy, aides said no.

"The long and the short of it is that people are hurting today, and when you say that it doesn't save much money, our calculation is that for the average driver it would save 70 dollars," said chief strategist Geoff Garin. Internal polling, he added, said that the position was resonating with Indianans.

"We're seeing in our polling that working people appreciate the fact that Senator Clinton understands the incredible economic strain they are facing," Garin said.

Not mentioned on the conference call, but making its way around the Internet on Thursday, was a story from Clinton's 2000 Senate campaign in New York, when she came out in opposition to a gas tax holiday.

It is "a bad deal for New York and a potential bonanza for the oil companies," Clinton said of her Republican opponent Rick Lazio's plan to repeal 4.3 cents of the gas tax.

The campaign, on its website, said there was no contradiction between the two stances, pointing out that in 2000, the money would have been stripped from a highway trust fund, while in 2008, the senator would generate funds taxes on oil companies.

On Wednesday, The Huffington Post attempted to find one expert from any and all ideological persuasion who believed that a gas tax holiday is a wise idea. It proved impossible. However, the idea is likely popular in upcoming primary states like Indiana and Ohio, and other politicians, alongside Clinton, have argued that it is in the government's interest to give all consumers a bit of at-the-pump relief.

TO ALL THE OBAMA SUPPORTERS:
Since the media is refusing to reveal/report the Paul vs Clinton fraud case in court right now, we need to create our own movement and flood every blog on CNN and every blogging website on the World Wide Web with information from the case regardless of what the topic is. For those that don't know - Google Paul vs Clinton and hold on to your shirt with what you read!!
For those of you who think this case has been thrown out or is irrelevant:

"In the landmark civil fraud case against Bill Clinton in Los Angeles, where the former President is charged with defrauding a Hollywood dot com millionaire to help Hillary Clinton obtain more than $1.2 million from him for her 2000 Senate campaign, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Aurelio Munoz ruled on Friday, April 25, 2008 that Hillary Clinton would not be required to testify in a sworn deposition as a material witness in the case until AFTER the November election!." paulvclinton.comm)

Here is the kicker - the judge is a Bill Clinton appointee!

OBAMANACS UNITE!!! LET'S DO THIS!!

The Paul v. Clinton case is an item from the right-wing echo chamber and is not an issue Obama supporters should be using as campaign material. A wiki link with some details:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_F._Paul#Connections_to_Hillary_Clinton.27s_Senatorial_and_Presidential_Campaigns

Peter Paul's charges have previously been thrown out, apparently for good reasons. His mere reassertion of the charges does not make them any more substantial.

Obama can win the nomination without resorting to character assassination and scandal-mongering. It is not helpful for Democrats to sling mud at one another or to join forces with our opponents to defeat a member of our own party. Let's stick with the issues that really matter and select the candidate with the best plans for America's future.

A brief recap re: employing sound fiscal judgment for the following issues:

1. Iraq War; 2. Ear marks*; and 3. Gas-tax holiday

OBAMA 3 Hillzilla 0

*In case you missed it yesterday, Hillzilla has requested nearly $2.3 billion

in federal earmarks for 2009, almost three times the largest amount received by a

single senator this year.

Hillary's campaign is a TOTAL mess. Hillary, McCain, and Bush don't have clue about surviving with the levels of the current gas prices. Now NEITHER don't need advice from experts? Economic deficency started two decades ago----and NOW Americans are asked to continue the trend. Amazing! Just amazing! These people live comfortably while the majority of Americans struggle day after day. And they don't want advice? Summation-----THEY believe the economy is just fine.

All this talk about elitism, and how people don't like that...

I'm sorry, but I want my President to be better than me. I want my leader to have the fortitude, stamina and guts to make the really tough decisions, that I'm pretty sure I'm not equipped to do.

So that means we need someone who at least considers themselves elite. As long as they remember to keep an open mind, and to listen once in a while.

I'll have a beer with my President after that person leaves office.

That's our Hilly just making it up as she goes along. We know who she is courting now. that "working class white" as if they didn't have a brain in their heads. How dare her think the American people are so stupid. Not this time.

Remember when he looked right in the camera, shook his finger and said" I did not have sexual relations with that woman" Not this time.

Let's be smart. Let's make sure our leaders are smart. We don't want to have a beer with our President. We want him to work for us. Let's have our beers together and hold our leaders feet to the fire. No more lies

Not this time.

"Let's be smart"???

You are talking to an electorate who elected George Bush TWICE! Well...yes...I know what transpired in 2000. Point is, he should not have even been close. Then, they allowed almost the entire political and media establishment to offer themselves up as sacrificial lambs in Iraq for the Bush administration's greed. When they had the chance to vote for Dean in 2004...they allowed the GOP and media to persuade them that a presidential candidate cannot get excited and "whoop." So what did the electorate do? That's right...vote for Bush.

And now we are being sold TWO Bushes...Hillary and McCain. The electorate is being led by the nose again. The A.D.D electorate thrives on the distractions offered by a gleeful GOP and media circus.

All in all, how important is lying about a blowjob? You know, versus 50% greater national debt, 4,000+ dead, 30,000 maimed, $3-7 trillion war costs, $4.00 gas.

Sayyyyyyyy, have you ever given a blowjob? For free?

I wonder why the Clinton camp doesn't realize that we've just had 8 years of the most unpopular president in American history (apparently) who takes pride in ignoring the experts?

People go to college and become professionals and specialize in something, and then you have people in positions of power who haven't spent even a fraction of that time focusing on an issue, but they certainly feel like they have a solution "in their gut". They think somehow, by not getting advice from folks who know the details, that that makes them somehow superior and stronger.

It doesn't matter if your intelligent like Clinton, or a stooge like Bush. If you ignore advice from the people who know, you are an idiot and you are putting the American people at risk in order to further your own egotism.

Speaking of the last eight years, how is this for redux:
Iran has complained to the UN about Hillary's remark that in retaliation to an attack on Israel she would obliterate Iran. This sure sounds like a strong indication that with Hillary we sure would get another Republican type warmonger. She isn"t even yet the Democratic party nominee, just a contender for the nomination, and she is rattling sabers -- a strategy of belligerent non-communication with key world players. We have seen for eight years how that has worked.

Wow she sounds a little elitist here doesn't she? he he he

This is a pandering strategy to her base of older voters who do not understand economics very well and who also oversaw the leadup to the incredible environmental catastrophe we are facing and don't seem too concerned to do anything about it. Yep it appeals to the "trust your gut" voters. They will say "that Hillary speaks for me" when they should be saying "she obviously doesn't care about the earth we are leaving to our kids."

It is interesting to note that the neocon-leaning portion of the republicans in our state house here in Missouri are also looking to enact a gas tax holiday despite adequate funds for infrastructure maintenance.
