WASHINGTON — A leader of the Democratic Party under Bill Clinton switched his allegiance to Barack Obama on Thursday and urged fellow Democrats to end the bruising nomination fight.

"This has got to come to an end," former Democratic National Committee Chairman Joe Andrew told reporters in his hometown of Indianapolis just days before Tuesday's crucial state primary. He said he planned to call all the other superdelegates he knows and encourage them to back Obama.

Bill Clinton appointed Andrew chairman of the DNC in 1999, and he led the party through the disputed 2000 presidential race before stepping down in 2001. Andrew endorsed Hillary Rodham Clinton last year on the day she declared her candidacy for the White House.

In a lengthy letter explaining his decision, Andrew said he is switching his support because "a vote for Hillary Clinton is a vote to continue this process, and a vote to continue this process is a vote that assists (Republican) John McCain."

"The ship is taking on water right now," Andrew said at the news conference. "We need to patch those holes, heal the rift and go forward to beat John McCain."

Asked for a response to Andrew's decision, Clinton spokesman Phil Singer said, "We support that Democratic process and think that every American should be able to weigh in and support the candidate of his or her own choosing."

Andrew said the Obama campaign never asked him to switch his support, but he decided to do so after watching Obama's handling of two issues in recent days. He said Obama took the principled stand in opposing a summer gas tax holiday that both Clinton and McCain supported, even though it would have been easier politically to back it. And he said he was impressed with Obama's handling of the controversy surrounding his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

Wright's outspoken criticisms of the United States have threatened Obama's candidacy. Obama initially refused to denounce his former pastor, but he did so this week after Wright suggested that Obama secretly agrees with him.

"He has shown such mettle under fire," Andrew said in the interview. "The Jeremiah Wright controversy just reconfirmed for me, just as the gas tax controversy confirmed for me, that he is the right candidate for our party."

Andrew's decision puts Obama closer to closing Clinton's superdelegate lead. Clinton had a big advantage among superdelegates, many of whom like Andrew have ties to the Clintons and backed her candidacy early on. But most of the superdelegates taking sides recently have gone for Obama, who has won more state contests.

That includes DNC member John Patrick, vice president of the Texas AFL/CIO, who announced his support for Obama Thursday as well.

Obama now trails her by just 15 superdelegates, 248-263. This week, he picked up 12 superdelegates, including three add-on delegates named by the Illinois Democratic Party, while she netted four.

Superdelegates are nearly 800 elected leaders and Democratic Party officials who aren't bound by the outcome of state contests and can cast their ballot for any candidate at the national convention. They are especially valuable in this race since neither Clinton nor Obama can win enough pledged delegates to secure the nomination through state-by-state elections.

Obama now leads in the delegate count overall 1736.5 to 1597.5 for Clinton. A candidate needs 2,025 delegates to win the nomination. About 230 superdelegates remain undecided, and about 60 more will be selected at state party conventions and meetings throughout the spring.

Other party leaders are encouraging superdelegates to pick a side by late June to prevent the fight from going to the national convention in August. Andrews wrote in his letter that he is calling for "fellow superdelegates across the nation to heal the rift in our party and unite behind Barack Obama."

It's the second endorsement for Obama this week that could be influential in Indiana. Rep. Baron Hill, who represents a crucial swing district in the state, endorsed Obama on Wednesday. Clinton has the backing of Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh, who has a vast organization in the state and has been campaigning aggressively with the former first lady.

Obama and Clinton are running close in Indiana and both need a victory there _ Obama to help rebound from a loss to Clinton in Pennsylvania and to prove he can win Midwestern voters, and Clinton so she can overcome Obama's lead in the race overall.

Hmm. HuffPo makes a big deal of Obama gaining 3 former DNC heads... but fails to mention that Clinton gained 7 today. I wonder why???

Nah... it couldn't be...

Such hypocrisy here. The new politics same as the old politics--that's why these corporate lawyers are lining up behind Obama--and that's what Andrews is--a big-time Mergers and Aquisitions lawyer--from a Chicago based law firm. I think he also was a big asset in Gore's win/loss that helped put GWB in power. By the way, most mergers end up with net job losses --the gains are for management and investors.

Joe Andrew,
Why are you calling for Hillary to drop out before everyone has a chance to vote. As a superdelegates, you get to cast your 10,001 votes for Obama and you want all the other supers to cast their 10,001 votes for Obama, but you don’t want the people to cast their single vote for the candidate of their choice. Is it because the DNC has more control over the superdelegates than they have over the unwashed masses? Is it because you know that Wright is a big deal to the people? That he may want to hold another press conference to tell us some truths about Obama? That the Rezko trial may hit the news before long? Or is it because, no matter how the DNC tried to rig this nomination process, things are not going as planned?
I want every vote counted, including those cast in MI and FL! I want the DNC elite to stop telling Clinton to drop out! I want the voters to know everything there is to know about both candidates! I want the people to select our candidate!
BTW, if Hillary Clinton is forced out of this contest before every vote is counted I will actively campaign against every politician that endorsed Obama and every dollar I can afford to part with will go to 527's targeting Obama. I would rather have a republican in the Whitehouse another 4 years than allow our Party leaders to believe that we can be silenced!

It is very clear Hillary cannot be trusted...

- Not keeping the agreement in Michigan
- Not keeping the agreement in Florida
- NAFTA support
- Bosnia
- Voting for war
- Drinking shots and bowling (Hillary is not one of the guys/girls)
- Gas Tax

The list goes on. There is no question about it. Hillary cannot be trusted. Her base needs to look past the fact that she is a woman, and vote for the candidate that tells the American people the truth, good or bad.

It is very clear Barack cannot be trusted...

- Ignoring the Voters in Michigan
- Ignoring the Voters in Florida
- Wink and Nod to Canada about NAFTA
- Wright, Rezko, Ayers, Dohrn …
- Throwing Typical White Grandma under the Bus
- Shooting Hoops in a USMC t-shirt (as if!)
- Gas Tax
- Elitist Arugula Munching Snob

The list goes on. There is no question about it. Barack cannot be trusted. His base needs to look past the fact that he is black, and vote for the candidate that tells the American people the truth, good or bad.

Should we also look beyond that fact that Hillary is a LIAR and therefore could never, never never be trusted - Hillary's base needs to look beyond the fact that she is white and vote for the candidate that tells the truth and not tell the people once she's caught in a lie to GET OVER IT - then goes on a late night show and MAKE A JOKE OF HER LIE - Imagine what she will do if she becomes president - will she say my fellow americans, please believe what I'm saying now....

Many people have unfairly linked Sen. Obama to Louis Farrakhan, especially Hillary, who in one of the debates lambasted her opponent and meanly tried to impugn his character.
But if anyone had bothered to investigate Hillary’s staunchest supporters by plugging in the name “Farrakhan” on YouTube.com, they would have soon found a “Gotcha” to hit her on the head with.
Sen. Clinton’s backer, Pennsylvania governor Ed Rendell who campaigned and carried the state for her, not only has praised Farrakhan in public, but also considers him a personal friend.
Being a “governor,” Ed Rendell praising Farrakhan in a formal and official setting should be a greater concern for the voters and the Clinton camp than an egocentric pastor’s rant in church.
If using the nasty “guilt by association” tactic is an appropriate tool to define Sen. Obama’s integrity, then in all fairness, the same yardstick should apply to measure Hillary’s.
After watching the videos found at the following links, hopefully someone will start asking Hillary Clinton and Gov. Rendell some tough questions to explain their relationship with Louis Farrakhan.

I think some of the posters who are saying they'll vote for McCain if Hillary loses are mostly imposters. I respect Sen. Clinton’s relentless efforts and her real supporters’ commitment, but right wing pundits are encouraging Republicans to temporarily switch parties to vote for Clinton in Democratic primaries because they know she’ll bring out their voters next fall. They have a well prepared “Anyone But Hillary” strategy designed to motivate their conservative base who otherwise would be uninspired by McSame. It seemed like Sen. Clinton did well in PA, but how many of her votes came from unethical Republicans trying to subvert our Democratic system? I'm a middle aged, educated female, Hillary’s major constituency, and I know that people in my demographic will vote for any Democrat over McSame. Don’t get fooled by these Republicans claiming to be Hillary supporters. They’re just posting on these sites to make us all think we’d better go with Clinton, even though our instincts tell us otherwise.

Wiam, Thanks for your post. If only you could get past the "I'm voting for Hillary because she's a woman", we'd have something.

Well, I guess Obama WILL win the general election for sure now with Diebold's lawyer in his camp.

Let's find out a bit about Joe Andrew.
In a nutshell: In 1990, Joe Andrew was Deputy Secretary of State of Indiana. By 1995, he was Chairman of the Indiana Democratic Committee, where he raised a ton of money. He was moved to the DNC by 1999, first as finance chairman, then as chairman. In 2001 he took a position with a Wall Street firm; from there, he ran for governor of Indiana, then took a job with another law firm, then became a partner in a firm that does lobbying, in August 2005 accepting an assignment to do a PR blitz for Diebold.

Did it matter when he was in the Clinton camp? Now that he moved to Obama's camp without being asked you want to find out about him? No thank you!

Why don't you find out about your candidate and how she feels about those about to vote in IN. They are "shit," to her camp according to the video below. After viewing it come back and join us on the Obama team.

Sorry Obama08Supporter, I didn't see a video. All I read was some items of interest that Senator Obama wishes he could bring up that were used by the Republicans in the 90's to try to bring the Clintons down. I suffered through the BJ and impeachment so I know about them.

I did find the answer to the question, "Who is Barack Obama?" if you want to know. He is the perfect Democratic Presidential nominee and is all things to all people. He is crafted by David Axelrod and here is how he did it starting many years ago.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/01/magazine/01axelrod.t.html?_r=1&oref=slogin&pagewanted=print

Obama’s Narrator
When Barack Obama decided in January that he would run for president in 2008 and quietly began calling up his staff members and close supporters to tell them so, the choice had many effects, but one of the most immediate and parochial was that it sent Obama’s chief political and media adviser, a Chicago consultant named David Axelrod, into his editing studio. For four years Axelrod has had camera crews tracking virtually everything Obama has done in public — chatting up World War II vets in southern Illinois, visiting his father’s ancestral village in western Kenya — and there were days when the camera crews have outnumbered the civilians.

“I believe it would be important to get every member of Congress on record,” Clinton told supporters at a rally in southern Indiana. “Do they stand with the hard-pressed Americans who are trying to pay their gas bills at the gas station or do they once again stand with the oil companies?

“I want to know where people stand and I want them to tell us, are they with us or against us when it comes to taking on the oil companies?” she added.

Hillary has morphed into George Bush "either with us or against us" --she will take on his 3rd term. We all know how well this type of presiding has made our country stronger.

A year ago, The Clintons were never to ever be criticized! So said any Democrat....now the party has turned on Bill Clinton. Only now does Bill Clinton see how quickly his former supporters will cast him aside for the latest fad (Barack Obama). It's not too late to become a Republican Bill Clinton! We welcome everyone into the party.

People have a right to change their minds as well as their parties. Everyone that deflects from the Clinton camps gets such derogatory remarks from her supporters. Does her supporters ever think that maybe there is a real valid reason why those people leave? They know more about what goes on behind the scenes than the supporters themselves.

Look at this video, where Clinton camp is call the Hoosiers "shit," turn the volume up so there will be no mistaken, then come back and tell me why people should not leave the Clintons.

Get real. Bill Clinton can NEVER become VP. He has already served 2 terms as President so it is unconstitutional for him to be VP. You need to get a civics lesson.
