WASHINGTON — A leader of the Democratic Party under Bill Clinton switched his allegiance to Barack Obama on Thursday and urged fellow Democrats to end the bruising nomination fight.

"This has got to come to an end," former Democratic National Committee Chairman Joe Andrew told reporters in his hometown of Indianapolis just days before Tuesday's crucial state primary. He said he planned to call all the other superdelegates he knows and encourage them to back Obama.

Bill Clinton appointed Andrew chairman of the DNC in 1999, and he led the party through the disputed 2000 presidential race before stepping down in 2001. Andrew endorsed Hillary Rodham Clinton last year on the day she declared her candidacy for the White House.

In a lengthy letter explaining his decision, Andrew said he is switching his support because "a vote for Hillary Clinton is a vote to continue this process, and a vote to continue this process is a vote that assists (Republican) John McCain."

"The ship is taking on water right now," Andrew said at the news conference. "We need to patch those holes, heal the rift and go forward to beat John McCain."

Asked for a response to Andrew's decision, Clinton spokesman Phil Singer said, "We support that Democratic process and think that every American should be able to weigh in and support the candidate of his or her own choosing."

Andrew said the Obama campaign never asked him to switch his support, but he decided to do so after watching Obama's handling of two issues in recent days. He said Obama took the principled stand in opposing a summer gas tax holiday that both Clinton and McCain supported, even though it would have been easier politically to back it. And he said he was impressed with Obama's handling of the controversy surrounding his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

Wright's outspoken criticisms of the United States have threatened Obama's candidacy. Obama initially refused to denounce his former pastor, but he did so this week after Wright suggested that Obama secretly agrees with him.

Story continues below

"He has shown such mettle under fire," Andrew said in the interview. "The Jeremiah Wright controversy just reconfirmed for me, just as the gas tax controversy confirmed for me, that he is the right candidate for our party."

Andrew's decision puts Obama closer to closing Clinton's superdelegate lead. Clinton had a big advantage among superdelegates, many of whom like Andrew have ties to the Clintons and backed her candidacy early on. But most of the superdelegates taking sides recently have gone for Obama, who has won more state contests.

That includes DNC member John Patrick, vice president of the Texas AFL/CIO, who announced his support for Obama Thursday as well.

Obama now trails her by just 15 superdelegates, 248-263. This week, he picked up 12 superdelegates, including three add-on delegates named by the Illinois Democratic Party, while she netted four.

Superdelegates are nearly 800 elected leaders and Democratic Party officials who aren't bound by the outcome of state contests and can cast their ballot for any candidate at the national convention. They are especially valuable in this race since neither Clinton nor Obama can win enough pledged delegates to secure the nomination through state-by-state elections.

Obama now leads in the delegate count overall 1736.5 to 1597.5 for Clinton. A candidate needs 2,025 delegates to win the nomination. About 230 superdelegates remain undecided, and about 60 more will be selected at state party conventions and meetings throughout the spring.

Other party leaders are encouraging superdelegates to pick a side by late June to prevent the fight from going to the national convention in August. Andrews wrote in his letter that he is calling for "fellow superdelegates across the nation to heal the rift in our party and unite behind Barack Obama."

It's the second endorsement for Obama this week that could be influential in Indiana. Rep. Baron Hill, who represents a crucial swing district in the state, endorsed Obama on Wednesday. Clinton has the backing of Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh, who has a vast organization in the state and has been campaigning aggressively with the former first lady.

Obama and Clinton are running close in Indiana and both need a victory there _ Obama to help rebound from a loss to Clinton in Pennsylvania and to prove he can win Midwestern voters, and Clinton so she can overcome Obama's lead in the race overall.

Hillary connects with poor blue-collar voters. This is what she said to Bill O'Reilly:
"And you know what, rich people, God bless us, we deserve all the opportunities to make sure our country and our blessings continue for the next generation."

God bless rich people. I think we have had quite enough of that kind of thinking over the last 7 years.

Can you provide a link to the quote from Andrews in 2000? I cannot find anything that shows him saying that.

Also, what action do you suggest he should have taken after the Supreme Court made their decision? Violent revolution?

Isn't it about time Obama and Clinton started REALLY discussing the issues? If the media ia so hung up on Hillary landing under fire and Barack dissociating himself from his pastor, let them continue to repeat old sound bites and make themselves appear important. We're not voting for them. They only have one vote, also, altho' they sure do influence a lot of people. There are so many problems we face in the next several years, so many of which Bush created and we must resolve, that it's time we face the future and decided who can most effectively lead us out of this mess. At some point, conventions were created to determine the presidential candidate. Isn't that still the case? Just because there were a bunch of weak contenders half-heartedly running against McCain, who is also a rather half-hearted candidate, doesn't mean two strong, viable leaders can't continue to explain their policies and ideas and approach to the many different, but all significant, issues we must face immediately when Bush finally (whew!) leaves office. I think the more we learn about Obama and Clinton over thenext few months, the better off we are in choosing the candidate who can represent us for the next four years. Let's let the covention do what it was originally meant to do.

Dear US! let Andrew have one day fame. Tomorrow, nobody will know who is Andrew. Just if we will put him on the list near the other traitors of Hillary, maybe then if we can keep him in a black list, people like us will remeber them the traitors and accordingly will trust th in them in the future.Good, they deffected to Obama's camp., for now, nobody knows ,in the future that could change? You never know how you stand with this type of chaps.

Wow, you Hillary fanatics sure are the most BITTER bunch of whiners I have EVER heard. And I mean EVER! Really, a BLACKLIST? As in, Joe McCartney era politics and scare tactics? HAVE YOU NO SHAME? NO DECENCY?

What you (along with the rest of the delusional Hillary supporters) fail to grasp is that Obama has ALREADY WON THE NOMINATION! Even if Hillary wins Indiana, all that will do is prolong the Super Delegate migration to Obama by a few weeks. And while I may personally think of the SD's who in the last week pledged support for HIllary as "traitors" to the Democratic party (since they TOO can't see the writing on the wall, and are helping to DRAG on this election), I won't be keeping any "list" of them to use against them after Obama becomes President. In fact, I'm sure I'll forget all about them when I'm to busy laughing and celebrating at Obama inugaration party.

Why in the name of all that is holy has it taken the superdelegates so long to figure out what any moron knew at least two months ago, beginning with Bill's unfortunate and dismissive remarks just before the S. Car. primary -- that the virulence of this primary season has damaged the party, hardened positions, and made not unlikely what four months ago would have seemed impossible -- another Republican presidency.

If American’s really understood the big picture and a lot of us do, you’ll know that our votes do not count whether it’s a Republican or Democrat. It is entirely up to the powerful billionaire men on both side of the fence that really chooses who the candidates are. They own the Media and there dominion reporters so it really doesn’t matter. Only a small percentage of American people vote in the first place and after this election the large number of turn out will diminish and an even smaller percentage will vote.

This election is a case in point. Behind the scenes of the Democratic Party they know that Hillary is the best and strongest candidate because Barrack Obama has little experience and a lot of Chicago baggage but he is the chosen one by powerful men than can easily out spend the Democratic Party. So it’s not the smoke filled back rooms of the DNP that the deals are made but by elite which holds the strings of our government like puppets. The Democrat puppets are so fearful the money they need in competing come this November will dry up that they will not do the right thing. It’s a mess that they created but it is the American people that have toiled and died for this country that will loose.

andrew's right. it's time to stop this sillyness. hillary represents the politics we've had for the last 20 years and obama represents what's to come. time to stop pandering to an audience held in utter disregard by the candidate and tell them honestly what "the situation" is.

trust me. we can deal with it. we need to change direction. hillary just can't help herself. it's time for her to gracefully withdraw to help the party in other ways.

Howard Dean has created a mess that there are no easy solution, well there is but that takes fortitude. When looking at Florida and Michigan why were they the only states punished? There were other states like South Carolina and Ohio to name a couple that moved there schedule up, why were they not punished as well? Florida certified votes must be counted, is this not a democracy?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:15 PM on 05/01/2008

No he didn't. He enforced the rules after warning the states and getting the candidates to agree on not allowing the delegates to count. Your argument isn't valid. Counting these votes wouldn't be fair to any candidate or to the voters who stayed home knowing their vote would not ocunt.

All remaining Superdels need to come out now and stop this madness.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:48 PM on 05/01/2008

Why? Because you want your candidate to win. How about all you so-called
believers in change start calling for Michigan and Florida to revote. It should be one person, one vote, but to deny a person their vote is a travisty. The one with the most votes wins. This superdelegate concept is a joke. Most are jumping ship becuase they believe Obama will win
and are not going to risk their political futures. Come on Obama supporters stop promoting what works for you and support true democarcy as we the people. Geeez, It's not like Obama and Michelle or Bill and Hillary are going to have any for us over for diner any time soon. All we have is each other.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:08 PM on 05/01/2008

Sorry to remind you, but the system says that the person with the majority of delegates wins. In the general election the candidate with the majority of electoral college votes wins, even if they lose by popular vote. Just because you (like me) wish to have a system where each votes counts the same, does not make it so.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:15 PM on 05/01/2008

Again, REALLY? As much as I dislike Hillary supporters, and as much flack as I post about them, my rants are ALWAYS based in reality, and I (and other) Obama supporters never seem to sink to this Republican level of falsehoods and desperation.

There are NO Obama supporters out there who oppose a revote. In fact, Obama himself supported one, though one that was also fair to THE OTHER 48 STATES OUT THERE THAT PLAYED BY THE RULES! As for the Super Delegate situation, Obama supporters are JUST as upset that the Democratic party uses them as anyone else. Clearly, any election should be one person, one vote, with no delegates or electoral colleges mucking up democracy.

There were rules set in place before the elections that ALL the candidates agreeed on. Now, Hillary wants to change many of the rules now that the contest is basically over, while Obama has played by them the whole time and has come out on top. So, "be reasonable" and open your eyes: Obama IS the Democratic nominee, and he got it by playing by the RULES and supporting a REAL democratic process, in addition to being the BEST candidate.

You must be a poltical novice. I'm getting so tired of explaining this. Hilalry has effectively lost the nomination. She can not catch Obama's pledged delgeates and using super delegates to supersede that count would not be good for our party. Most primary seasons are wrapped up by now and do not go to the convention for a reason. It hurts the party and leaves little time for healing and going after the Republican. If hillary had dropped out after Super Tuesday, after losing 11 states in a row, just imagine all the resources we cuold have directed towards McCain. Instead we donate and our cnadidates are spending it on attacking each other. Hillary is killing us.

BeReasonable1 - please be reasonable!
We are in agreement: "Most [Superdelegates] are jumping ship because they believe Obama will win and are not going to risk their political futures." Except they WILL decide the Democratic nominee by their votes at the Convention. They not only believe Obama will win the nomination, they know Obama has more votes and more delegates and that Obama will "lead" the party and country with honor and integrity; through debate and negotiation. They know Obama will listen to the people in determining America's resurgence at home and thought the world.
Besides, Clinton has destroyed any thoughts in my mind, that she can lead. She can dictate, but that is not the real Democratic Party. We need a leader who listens and offers hope. That leader is already leading. His Name is Obama.

Why hasn't the MSM talked about the Clintons' former pastor's sex-abuse trial? This is very lopsided.

See the article below from iReport http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-107366)

IF A PASTOR IS KNOWN BY THE COMPANY THEY KEEP!

When the Rev. William Procanick put his hand on the Bible during his sex-abuse trial in Oneida County Court earlier this year, he swore to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth. But as the former Clinton pastor was sentenced Friday to three years in prison for inappropriately touching a 7-year-old girl at his home last March, Judge Michael L. Dwyer said , Procanick sacrificed his honesty the day he testified.

Okay, so now that Bill and Hillary Clinton's pastor has been convicted of child molestation, will we see the same furor directed at Hillary that Obama has had toendure these last few weeks?

IF A CANDIDATE IS KNOWN BY THE PASTOR THEY KEEP.
Then you need to email this article to everyone you know. Here the CLINTON'S Pastor is convicted of child molestation. So, if Obama bears the guilt for his pastor's
comments, then Hillary has to be equally tainted by this guy's crimes.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:26 PM on 05/01/2008

That is so different. That pastor can’t be connected to Obama, so it isn’t a controversial issue at all AND that pastor isn’t black.

You “Obamabots” keep yammering on about double standards. There aren’t any double standards. Rev. Wright is black like Obama and Jesse Jackson and refuses to wear a flag pin. He is certainly more controversial than the Clinton’s pedophile pastor. Geez.

Hillary has had shots and beers with the folks.

She voted for two authorizations of the use of force based on bad intelligence.

Panders to the people by cutting fifteen cents out of a gallon of four dollar gas. (Minnesota's bridges falling down, falling down, falling down.)

Told us stories about landing in a hot zone under sniper fire.

Told us stories of hunting with her working class dad at the cottage in Pa. (In my town if your daddy owned the fabric factory and you had a house just for hanging out in during the summer ..... you were the rich people, the elite if you will. You know the kids who didn't go to the YWCA to learn to swim because of course they had the cottage on the lake.)

Now she is lauded as not being a pansy and having testicles.

Let us see, she is a woman who drinks with strangers for votes. Panders meaningless tax cuts. Lies about her past valor. Thinks that factory owners are just folk. Has supporters who want a candidate who ain't a queer and has balls.

Why is it that Hillary is considered a change from the man who currently occupies the Oval Office? She's a woman?

"While I was hopeful that a long, contested primary season would invigorate our Party, the polls show that the tone and temperature of the race is now hurting us. "

Here is what the polls show Mr. Andrew: democratic party membership has increased during this "long, contested primary season"; voter turnout has increased as well; previously disenfranchised groups of voters are showing an unusually high level of enthusiasim and eagerness to participate in our democratic process (democratic process); and the polls show that if the general election were to be held today, Senator Clinton would be the next President of the United States. So exactly how is the "tone and temperture" of this democratic process hurting us?

You are certainly entitled to endorse any candidate you so choose. You can switch back and forth as many times as you like. However, please do not kid yourself that there is even one rationally thinking person, whether they be a Clinton, Obama or McCain supporter, who for one minute believes you have decided to no longer support the candidate who is now ahead in the polls for both the primary and the general election, for any but selfish and self-serving motives.

I'm pretty sure that once the nominee is decided he will have his ass handed to him on a silver platter.

I've never been polled. And it seems to me all the polls vary..they don't agree. So we need to know which polls and just who are they polling. They don't poll cellphones. Senator Clinton is toast anyway..she can't wint and she is desperate. Talk about "obliterating" a country in an answer to a hypothetical question is just dumb. Right up there with "bring 'em on".

Everyone! Google Paul vs Clinton and hold on to your shirt with what you read!! I can not believe this is being hidden so well by the media and Clinton supporters claim she has a chance of winning once she is convicted in this case that she is apparently guilty of along with Gov Ed Randell and Former Pres Clinton. This will all be over soon! I know the superdelegates are watching this!

P.S. all Obama supporter should start talking about this in every post maybe the media will get the idea ! let the truth be told!

Go Obama 08 Yes We Can!!!!
