WASHINGTON — A leader of the Democratic Party under Bill Clinton switched his allegiance to Barack Obama on Thursday and urged fellow Democrats to end the bruising nomination fight.

"This has got to come to an end," former Democratic National Committee Chairman Joe Andrew told reporters in his hometown of Indianapolis just days before Tuesday's crucial state primary. He said he planned to call all the other superdelegates he knows and encourage them to back Obama.

Bill Clinton appointed Andrew chairman of the DNC in 1999, and he led the party through the disputed 2000 presidential race before stepping down in 2001. Andrew endorsed Hillary Rodham Clinton last year on the day she declared her candidacy for the White House.

In a lengthy letter explaining his decision, Andrew said he is switching his support because "a vote for Hillary Clinton is a vote to continue this process, and a vote to continue this process is a vote that assists (Republican) John McCain."

"The ship is taking on water right now," Andrew said at the news conference. "We need to patch those holes, heal the rift and go forward to beat John McCain."

Asked for a response to Andrew's decision, Clinton spokesman Phil Singer said, "We support that Democratic process and think that every American should be able to weigh in and support the candidate of his or her own choosing."

Andrew said the Obama campaign never asked him to switch his support, but he decided to do so after watching Obama's handling of two issues in recent days. He said Obama took the principled stand in opposing a summer gas tax holiday that both Clinton and McCain supported, even though it would have been easier politically to back it. And he said he was impressed with Obama's handling of the controversy surrounding his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

Wright's outspoken criticisms of the United States have threatened Obama's candidacy. Obama initially refused to denounce his former pastor, but he did so this week after Wright suggested that Obama secretly agrees with him.

"He has shown such mettle under fire," Andrew said in the interview. "The Jeremiah Wright controversy just reconfirmed for me, just as the gas tax controversy confirmed for me, that he is the right candidate for our party."

Andrew's decision puts Obama closer to closing Clinton's superdelegate lead. Clinton had a big advantage among superdelegates, many of whom like Andrew have ties to the Clintons and backed her candidacy early on. But most of the superdelegates taking sides recently have gone for Obama, who has won more state contests.

That includes DNC member John Patrick, vice president of the Texas AFL/CIO, who announced his support for Obama Thursday as well.

Obama now trails her by just 15 superdelegates, 248-263. This week, he picked up 12 superdelegates, including three add-on delegates named by the Illinois Democratic Party, while she netted four.

Superdelegates are nearly 800 elected leaders and Democratic Party officials who aren't bound by the outcome of state contests and can cast their ballot for any candidate at the national convention. They are especially valuable in this race since neither Clinton nor Obama can win enough pledged delegates to secure the nomination through state-by-state elections.

Obama now leads in the delegate count overall 1736.5 to 1597.5 for Clinton. A candidate needs 2,025 delegates to win the nomination. About 230 superdelegates remain undecided, and about 60 more will be selected at state party conventions and meetings throughout the spring.

Other party leaders are encouraging superdelegates to pick a side by late June to prevent the fight from going to the national convention in August. Andrews wrote in his letter that he is calling for "fellow superdelegates across the nation to heal the rift in our party and unite behind Barack Obama."

It's the second endorsement for Obama this week that could be influential in Indiana. Rep. Baron Hill, who represents a crucial swing district in the state, endorsed Obama on Wednesday. Clinton has the backing of Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh, who has a vast organization in the state and has been campaigning aggressively with the former first lady.

Obama and Clinton are running close in Indiana and both need a victory there _ Obama to help rebound from a loss to Clinton in Pennsylvania and to prove he can win Midwestern voters, and Clinton so she can overcome Obama's lead in the race overall.

Mr. Andrew's and Rep.Hill's decision to back Sen. Obama could not come at a worst time. It now appears likley that Sen. Clinton is going to win not only Indiana but also North Carolina. Add to this probable wins for her in West Virginia and Puerto Rico and we have a whole new ballgame. Florida
and Michigan could be seated for Sen. Clinton and then you will see the superdelegates start switching their pledged positions very quickly. I think that for Mr. Andrew and Rep. Hill one could call this an oops moment.

I honestly think Clinton could gain as many as 35 pledged delegates in the remaining contests (with big wins in Kentucky, West Virginia, and Puerto Rico.)

She is currently behind 166 pledged delegates, so she will only be behind 131 pledged delegates after the primaries are over.

A loss is still a loss.

Let's see if I get this right; the white working class folks are paying attention to this and are now even more likely to vote for Clinton. I doubt that many are paying to minutiae like this. Three word sound bites, maybe. "Hey, Joe did you hear that Andrews has flipped for Obama?" "Yea, man! This does it for me, I'm voting for Clinton." Give me a break.

Sorry Hastings. You can't do the math too well. She could win every contest from here on in and she still will be behind. What do you not understand about math? 2 + 2 =4. Obama has more pledge delegates and even if Hillary gets 2/3's of the Super delegates she still loses!

You have a choice, either get behind the candidate Obama or vote for McCain. I guess you like the war, tax cuts for the rich, more Scalia's on the bench and maybe another war or two just for good measure. Give me a break. Unless you are a member of the Hillary Hit squad or a Ditto Head, you can't rationally support Hillary at this point.

If Obama doesn't go into the convention with the neccessary pledged delegates to win the nomination it won't matter if he is ahead or not. After the first ballot ,all bets are off. Thinking that Sen. Obama has the nomination all wraped up is very short sighted. The problem is that hardly anyone has a memory of a close race going into a convention. This nonsense that Sen. Clinton should give up now or in June is ridiculous. It is not over untill someone wins the vote at the convention. Some people are upset because they want a coronation and not a real voting convention . Gee, what happened to "every vote counts."

Well, we all knew what Bill and Hillary Clinton were like when they began this ego driven campaign. There should be no surprises here. They are by nature antagonistic, untruthful, and divisive. They have created a disaster for the Democratic Party. Obama soon should have sufficient super delegates to win the nomination, but even then we cannot expect any gracious team playing from the Clintons. It's not how they operate. They have done everything possible to deny Obama and the Democratic Party a victory in November. They will be hoping and working for a McCain victory. The Clintons should not be forgiven for the damage they have done.

ALERT FOR OBAMA CAMPAIGN:

Do not get caught with your pants down again by letting the Clinton Campaign put out a controversial commercial over the weekend and your campaign playingh defense.

I advise your campaign to take the lead this time by putting out a controversial but accurate commercial, so they Clinton campaign have to be the ones on the defensive and complaining.

Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind,, Clinton's top surrogate in the state, often joins her on the stump in bashing the president for allowing Magnequench to move abroad. What Bayh doesn't tell voters these days is that he has blamed the company's moving on a 1995 decision made by Clinton's husband's administration.

This is from ABC news......

It does need to end. Hilary's ego and ambition are going to cause real harm to the Democrat Party, even if Obama wins the nomination, which I certainly hope he does. For me, he represents a chance to change things for the better. The last person who moved me in a similar way was Robert Kennedy in 1968.

It's just time for the f------ Clintons to get out of Dodge forever.

Obama should pass Hillary in SDs within the next few weeks but think about the many SDs who endorsed Hillary early on, before all that has unfolded about her and the way she's campaigned, back when it was "inevitable" that she would be the nominee.

Many of these SDs may have liked Obama from the start but endorsed Hillary because she was "inevitable". Many may have become very soured on Hillary after seeing all she has done in this campaign. They may not jump ship in big numbers (not all are as bold as Joe Andrew, many are cautious because they hold elective office) so as not to incur the Clinton wrath...until it is clear that they can do so without fear that a President Hillary would seek retribution.

I think we'll see a number of Hillary SDs peel away in the weeks to come, as it becomes crystal clear she can't reach 2024 and Obama will.

They also have drenched themselves in so many lies and greed,

that they have destroyed themselves too!

I know it's hard to see your candidate, finally, for what he really is. He betrayed you, all of you that fell for his lies and his total front he tried to sell. Most Americans will NOT fall for it, they see him for what he is now. he negated his great "race" speech. He sat there for 20 years and didn't complain until his poll numbers dropped. It's clear why he was upset, he was losing.

What bothers me is that Bill Clinton took $800K for CAFTA, and he wants to be first lady. And his dealings with Kazakhstan, and Dubai, etc. are also conflicts of interest to the people of the United States.

If Hillary is married to him, I cannot vote for her.

It cracked me up at the gas station yesterday when she said that she hasn't bought her own gas in a long time and really doesn't know what it costs but people tell her that the cost is high. Then she proceeds to try to get coffee and demonstrates that she also hasn't gotten coffee for herself in a long time either, must be nice to have "help". She never looked more eltist than she did yesterday, poor rich woman doesn't even know how to surive without help like us little people.

sorry, race relations are better dealt with with people who do not attend racist congregations. There is no such thing as "black" or "white" churches according to the Bible. These congregations are hate echo chambers that enable people to blame others for their own shortcomings. Nothing new there. If he is so post racial, what was he doing there? That particular issue is what turned me off as far as Obama (and I am a Black female) is concerned. I do not care that Obama has transcended race, but what about all of those other years and race did and does matter. Obama and his handlers will not allow him to speak to issues of relevance to Americans.

It doesn't bother me that he transcend race - Loyalty is something that Obama and his handlers doesn't seem to understand. Clinton's supposed friends (ex-friends of the Clintons) and Obama deserve one another. Each one will teach one, but they better watch their backs.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT A REAL DEMOCRAT IS, but I know what racism and BACK STABBING IS... (REAL DEMOCRATS - you think)

Obama is saying that we should move on from obsessing on Wright, not race. Bridging the race divide is a real issue, Wright is not. Obsessing on Wright will not solve our economic problems, get our troops home from Iraq or get people jobs. I'm surprised about the confusion here, Obama made this distinction crystal clear multiple times.
