WASHINGTON — A leader of the Democratic Party under Bill Clinton switched his allegiance to Barack Obama on Thursday and urged fellow Democrats to end the bruising nomination fight.

"This has got to come to an end," former Democratic National Committee Chairman Joe Andrew told reporters in his hometown of Indianapolis just days before Tuesday's crucial state primary. He said he planned to call all the other superdelegates he knows and encourage them to back Obama.

Bill Clinton appointed Andrew chairman of the DNC in 1999, and he led the party through the disputed 2000 presidential race before stepping down in 2001. Andrew endorsed Hillary Rodham Clinton last year on the day she declared her candidacy for the White House.

In a lengthy letter explaining his decision, Andrew said he is switching his support because "a vote for Hillary Clinton is a vote to continue this process, and a vote to continue this process is a vote that assists (Republican) John McCain."

"The ship is taking on water right now," Andrew said at the news conference. "We need to patch those holes, heal the rift and go forward to beat John McCain."

Asked for a response to Andrew's decision, Clinton spokesman Phil Singer said, "We support that Democratic process and think that every American should be able to weigh in and support the candidate of his or her own choosing."

Andrew said the Obama campaign never asked him to switch his support, but he decided to do so after watching Obama's handling of two issues in recent days. He said Obama took the principled stand in opposing a summer gas tax holiday that both Clinton and McCain supported, even though it would have been easier politically to back it. And he said he was impressed with Obama's handling of the controversy surrounding his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

Wright's outspoken criticisms of the United States have threatened Obama's candidacy. Obama initially refused to denounce his former pastor, but he did so this week after Wright suggested that Obama secretly agrees with him.

"He has shown such mettle under fire," Andrew said in the interview. "The Jeremiah Wright controversy just reconfirmed for me, just as the gas tax controversy confirmed for me, that he is the right candidate for our party."

Andrew's decision puts Obama closer to closing Clinton's superdelegate lead. Clinton had a big advantage among superdelegates, many of whom like Andrew have ties to the Clintons and backed her candidacy early on. But most of the superdelegates taking sides recently have gone for Obama, who has won more state contests.

That includes DNC member John Patrick, vice president of the Texas AFL/CIO, who announced his support for Obama Thursday as well.

Obama now trails her by just 15 superdelegates, 248-263. This week, he picked up 12 superdelegates, including three add-on delegates named by the Illinois Democratic Party, while she netted four.

Superdelegates are nearly 800 elected leaders and Democratic Party officials who aren't bound by the outcome of state contests and can cast their ballot for any candidate at the national convention. They are especially valuable in this race since neither Clinton nor Obama can win enough pledged delegates to secure the nomination through state-by-state elections.

Obama now leads in the delegate count overall 1736.5 to 1597.5 for Clinton. A candidate needs 2,025 delegates to win the nomination. About 230 superdelegates remain undecided, and about 60 more will be selected at state party conventions and meetings throughout the spring.

Other party leaders are encouraging superdelegates to pick a side by late June to prevent the fight from going to the national convention in August. Andrews wrote in his letter that he is calling for "fellow superdelegates across the nation to heal the rift in our party and unite behind Barack Obama."

It's the second endorsement for Obama this week that could be influential in Indiana. Rep. Baron Hill, who represents a crucial swing district in the state, endorsed Obama on Wednesday. Clinton has the backing of Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh, who has a vast organization in the state and has been campaigning aggressively with the former first lady.

Obama and Clinton are running close in Indiana and both need a victory there _ Obama to help rebound from a loss to Clinton in Pennsylvania and to prove he can win Midwestern voters, and Clinton so she can overcome Obama's lead in the race overall.

Same Reality: Obama leads in Pledge Delgates, Popular Vote and Number of states. I guess that means Hilary is leading in NOTHING worth taking advantage of. Obama has this LOCKED. He was prepared for things like this thats why he came READY from day one and if Hilary think she can jump to the finish line and forget all the losses and delegate math that Obama has then this is what is going to SPLIT the party. The supers are NOTdumb they KNOW there is no justification for Hilary to get the nomination over Obama because he is going through a rough patch.

As for the Gallup poll you reference, It's a daily tracking poll. According to Gallup: The four percentage point Clinton advantage in the April 28-30 polling is not statistically significant, but suggests slight movement in her favor after she and Obama had been tied the previous six days. Obama had held a significant lead over Clinton throughout much of April.

Do remember all the unsavory acts she pulled the last time she lived in the White House...????

REMEMBER WHITE WATER, FILEGATE, TRAVELGATE, STEALING VINCE FOSTER'S PAPERS BEFORE SHE LET THE POLCE INTO HIS OFFICE, HIRING PRIVATE INVESTIGATORS TO DISCREDIT THE WOMEN BILL CLINTON ABUSED AND IN THE CASE OF JUANITA BRODDERICK-RAPED, HAVING TO RETURN MORE THAN $30,OOO. WORTH OF FURNITURE ETC. THAT SHE STOLE TO FURNISH HER NEW MANSION IN D.C. AND MORE. IN ARKANSAS REMEMBER THE HOG FUTURE BONANZA, AND TROOPERGATE.

SHE'S A DISASTER AND VERY BAD FOR THIS COUNTRY.!!!!

Because Bill Clinton Head of the DNC? More delegates moving to Obama, apparently more next week. Clinton tried Robo-calls giving a false information date regarding registration in NC. Can you believe this bunch of Hoodlums?

Hoodlums is right. "Birds of a feather..." Bill is a confirmed liar, remember that he's been DISBARRED over lying to a federal grand jury! She's no different just craftier. She tells half-truths and anything else to get elected. They have this sense of entitlement that she must have it regardless of what the people want, or what the country needs.

We need someone exemplary. Someone who's galaxies far and away above the C student and the knucklehead who almost got thrown-out of the Naval Academy. He only got as far as he did because of his daddy and grand-daddy being highly decorated Naval officers.

Barack Obama is coming up from pulling his own boot-straps. He studied, he excelled, he paid his own school loans and went back to help the people after Harvard Law. THAT is the mark of a true public servant, NOT a politician.

REALITY CHECK - MAY 1, 2008

Much as it annoys me, I've included that wack poll for NC not showing Obama with around a 10% lead as all others do. Still shows that the remaining primaries have no effect on Obama's lead in dels (he's only about 15 behind Hillary in SDs now).

From Slate.com’s Delegate calculator and RCP’s poll averages as of today (please note how few delegates are realistically in play):

HILLARY"S NET DELEGATES FROM WINS

IN by 2.6% = 2
WV by (N/A - Assume10%) = 2
KY by (N/A - Assume10%) = 5
PR by (N/A " Assume 10%) = 5
============================
TOTAL NET DELEGATES ESTIMATED = 14

OBAMA"S NET DELEGATES FROM WINS

NC by 7.2% = 9
OR (N/A - Assume10%) = 6
MT (N/A - Assume10%) = 2
SD (N/A - Assume10%) = 1
=============================
TOTAL NET DELEGATES ESTIMATED = 18

155 Current Pledged Delegate Lead For Obama
+ 4 Net Delegates won by Obama
===
159 Delegate lead for Obama at the end of the primaries.

================================
DELEGATE COUNT AFTER PRIMARIES

Obama: 1696 + 243 SDs = 1939
Hillary: 1537 + 261 SDs = 1798

Around 227 undeclared SDs remain, Obama only needs 86 of them (36%) to hit 2025, Hillary needs all 227 of them (100%).

The total dels in play in the remaining primary are about 32. Even if Hillary won them all, she wouldn't catch Obama and would still need 209 of the 227 undeclared SDs (92%).

Fuggedaboutit!

Numbers don't lie....

New press release from the Clinton camp: "But..but...It's STILL do-able !!!

Obama will take NC...if he takes IN, the Clinton's SHOULD drop out of the race. If Obama takes both states, the flood of SD support should make her see she needs to quit !!!

Yep, would be cool if Obama wins IN and I agree, it should be seen as a knockout blow to Hillary by SDs. In any case, with Guam, IN and NC over in 5 days, only 6 contests left and Obama favored to win 3 of them (OR, SD and MT), the SDs should still flow big time to him.

Hillary's chances are in rapid decay, as more races are over (remember how a while back the MSM conceded she had to win ALL the races by 20% margins but have now conveniently forgotten that) the reality becomes clearer. As more SDs move out of the Undecided pool, the math becomes clearer. She can't and won't win.

Let's get this inevitable conclusion over with and turn to take down McCain and the Repugs.

Eye, my understanding from these sites is that the pledged del totals for each candidate include the estimated dels to be received in total. The sites only list SDs from states as undecided.

However, while checking, I realized that there is a category of SDs not included, referred to as "Unpledged Add-Ons". This brings the total SD number, including SDs Abroad, to 798 superdelegates casting 794 votes (due to SDs Abroad having half a vote).

So, I've revised the last part of my Reality Update for the future. For today:

==================

DELEGATE COUNT AFTER PRIMARIES

Obama: 1696 + 244 SDs = 1940
Hillary: 1537 + 265 SDs = 1802

Around 285 undeclared SDs remain, Obama only needs 84 of them (29%) to hit 2024, Hillary needs 227 of them (80%).

The total dels in play in the remaining primary are about 32. Even if Hillary won them all, she wouldn't catch Obama and would still need 209 of the 285 undeclared SDs (73%).

This article implies, in its last sentence, that Clinton can "overcome Obama's lead in the race overall" by winning in Indiana. She cannot. Not only that, she would have to win more than 70% of the pledged delegates in ALL of the remaining primaries in order to TIE Obama.

    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:03 PM on 05/01/2008

you keep operating under the misconception that a candidate has to lead in pledged delegates in order to get the nomination and you know that isn't true.

A candidate wins the nomination by getting to 2024 delegates, not by getting the most elected delegates.

Here's another thing I don't get about the Clintons: Bill announced a campaign to address adolescent obesity ... and Hillary continues to bulk up. Suggestions: once Obama is nominated, the Clintons should approach Jenny Craig about an endorsement deal. Or Hillary could audition for "The Biggest Loser."

If it wasn't for the "Ditto-heads" I do not believe that HRC would have gotten this far. Thanks to all the idiot rush-bot republicans, (who vote against their own interests) we get to have this debacle play out to the end.

Barack has shown he is head and shoulders over the other two candidates. The only way he can lose the nomination or the general is by vote-tampering (why didn't the dems pass a law to insure FAIR counting?) or downright racism.

Already hedging your bets I see, with the old fall back vote tampering. This may come as a surprise but some times Dems don't get as many votes as Repubs. And vice versa. And there are folks, black and white who may not vote for your guy. Honest, it doesn't mean their all rascists. If your an American there will be times when your candidate loses. Please try to accept it like an adult.

The math is such that Ms. Clinton must now win every remaining undeclared super delegate AND every remaining primary with at least 70% of the vote. It's over. You backed a losing horse. Put her to pasture and get ready to back a winner in the GE.

Riiiiiight ... and run Hillary and see the media present you with the definition of 'Billary'

if the MSM pimps the story -

Jeremiah Wright's loony toons == Barack Obama; then, you can bet

Bill Clinton's cigar/pardons/impeachment == Hillary Clinton ..

and lemme tell ya, there is plenty of video that can be looped, digested, and vomited all over the networks from the Billary years.

And exactly how many of the socially conservative "Reagan Democrats" do you think Hillary is going to win when the MSM and Faux News starts pimping the "scandals" ...?

Why don't you think they've already started? Because they want Hillary to run against not Barack. A vote for Hillary is a vote for McCain. and a vote for either is a vote for 8 more years of utter insanity and 8 more years of this:

On Feb 20, 2008 the IRS sent a letter of investigation to Obama's UCC church. It was received 2-28-2008. I haven''t seen a final decision on this. The matter regarded continuinance of the church's tax exemption due to in part to a speech delivered by Obama to the church's SYNOD in July 2007.....and other related matters. THIS IS A SERIOUS MATTER SINCE IT INVOLVES BARACK OBAMA PERSONALLY REGARDLESS OF HIS RECENT EMPHATIC SEPARATION FROM HIS FORMER PASTOR.

Oh, good lord. Do you remember 2004? I'm Catholic, but if the Catholic church did not lose tax exemption after the stunts the archbishop (Wisconsin then MO) pulled, then no one will. He outright told people they couldn't vote for Kerry. Any idea how politicians are elected in Utah? Any idea how Bush beat McCain in SC - through church bulletins.

Andrew is obviously well-connected in the party and DNC. His backing of Obama tells me that the Clinton's once-substantial power within the DNC and the party is perceived to be on the wane. I suspect that other uncommitted super delegates who favor Obama but have been reluctant to stick a finger in Clinton's eye for fear of retribution by will start coming out now.

It's great to see people of integrity coming forward in support of Obama. The media are bound and determined to hand us another pres who's "fun to have a beer with" with its constant portrayal of an "elite" Obama., which brings us an important point. When did "elite" become a perjorative? That very premise is seriously flawed. In today's environment, neither John F. Kennedy nor Franklin Roosevelt could get elected because neither abandoned their intelligence, grace, polish or style to appeal to a cartoonish caricature of the middle class. (And I can only imagine the snide remarks they'd be making about Jackie.) There was a time when we wanted a president who displayed class and style and who was without doubt smarter than we are. Not any more, and look where voting for the least curious, most pandering guy in the room has got us. Should Obama lose because of this tripe, he''ll come out OK, He's still Obama. I can't say as much about the nation, though.
