UPDATE: John McCain said on Thursday that President Bush shouldn't be blamed for the "Mission Accomplished" banner:

Republican John McCain says President Bush should not be held responsible for the much-criticized "mission accomplished" banner five years ago, but he should be blamed for bungling the early months of the Iraq war.

Thursday was the fifth anniversary of Bush's dramatic landing on an aircraft carrier where the banner hung. The certain GOP presidential nominee said he thought the banner was a mistake at the time.

As a refresher, here is the first paragraph of Bush's speech in front of the banner: "[M]y fellow Americans: Major combat operations in Iraq have ended. In the battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed."

Moreover, McCain himself defended the banner in June 2003 on Fox News:

NEIL CAVUTO (host): Senator -- after a conflict means after the conflict, and many argue the conflict isn't over.

McCAIN: Well, then why was there a banner that said mission accomplished on the aircraft carrier? Look, the -- I have said a long time that reconstruction of Iraq would be a long, long, difficult process, but the conflict -- the major conflict is over, the regime change has been accomplished, and it's very appropriate.

And on May 22, 2003 -- just three weeks after Bush spoke on the aircraft carrier -- McCain offered a mission accomplished speech of his own. On the Senate floor, McCain proclaimed "massive victory" in Iraq and credited combat-readiness for "our victory" in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Here's the extended excerpt from that speech:

Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom demonstrated to the world what we saw just 12 years ago. We went to war as the most combat-ready force in the world. The value of that readiness is clear. We won a massive victory in a few weeks, and we did so with very limited loss of American and allied lives. We were able to end aggression with minimum overall loss of life, and we were even able to greatly reduce the civilian casualties of Afghani and Iraqi citizens.

In order to understand the issues involved, it is necessary to recognize just how difficult it is to achieve the kind of readiness we had during Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. Readiness is not solely a matter of funding operations and maintenance at the proper level. It is not only a matter of funding adequate numbers of high quality personnel, or of funding superior weapons and munitions, strategic mobility and propositioning, high operating tempos, realistic levels of training at every level of combat, or of logistics and support capabilities.

Readiness, in fact, is all of these things and more. A force beings to go hollow the moment it loses its overall mix of combat capabilities in any one critical area. Our technology edge in Afghanistan and Iraq would have been meaningless if we did not have men and women trained to use it. Having the best weapons system platforms in the world would not have given us our victory if we had not had the right command and control facilities, maintenance capabilities, and munitions.

Check the ABC News story on Congressional Pork: http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Vote2008/Story?id=4572406&page=2

"Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., received 53 earmarks for his state, worth $97.4 million... Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., has never asked for an earmark.""

Obama asked for a earmark for his wife's employer, and her salary more than doubled.

Let's all chant together "Yes we can, yes we can. WE WANT MORE EARMARKS, MORE PORK, MORE CORRUPTION"

And then chant "Change we can believe in. WE WANT MORE PORK, MORE IGNORANCE, MORE CORRUPTION".

I guess you missed this part of the article:
"As for this year's presidential candidates, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., is the porker of the pack, having secured 281 earmarks worth a whopping $296.2 million. "
It's the dishonesty of HRC supporters that bothers me the most.

And this is related to the loss of billions of dollars, 4000 American lives, 30,000 crippled for life, 100,000 or more Iraqi dead, the trashing of our military, the raiding of the U.S. Treasury by war profiteers, all due to massive incompetence and outright lying, because... ?

Oh, no this is just your spam diatribe. Nothing to do with the topic under discussion. Move on, nothing to see here.

You forgot to mention YOUR candidates pork. Almost THREE HUNDRED MILLION by Hillary. Things that make you go hmmmmmm

AND proof and a link about his wife's employer and doubling her salary?

By the way, constantly screaming that Obama is a liar hardly makes anyone believe you.

Nothing worse than "concerned trolls".

Let's get it straight. His wife's employer is one of, if not the largest hospital in the state of Illinois.

Reverse psychology says: Mission *was* accomplished. Saddam Hussein is no longer in power. There are no weapons of mass destruction. A new government is in place. Bring the troops home.

Oh! and by the way their already here now It's only a matter of time until it happens again. Then we will all display our flags just like we did before. Oh! how quickly we forgot. If we want to be known as The United States of America, fight them over there. If we want to be known as the United Arab States of America fight them here. Its your choice. God Bless America, or God bless Ali.

No kidding this guy is officially an idiot

I've always wondered just how dumb someone is believe that all a few hundred terrorists have to do is bomb a few places and we would immediately capitulate to the terrorists and allow America to become the United Arab States and blah blah blah.

Just HOW WEAK are you Ray? At the first sign of trouble you're willing to roll over and let the terrorists take over YOUR life? Pretty pathetic dude.

Reminds me of all the NRA fear mongering about Clinton turning over the U.S. to the U.N. and they released expert reports on how to bury your guns a certain depth so the U.N. troops, when they arrived at your home to take your guns wouldn't find them.

I was always amazed at just how stupid people were to believe something like that could happen, AND THEN I MET ONE. YEP he actually believed that Clinton actually had the power to turn the U.S. over to the control of U.N. troops. He was THAT STUPID.

BUT let's take it a little further, suppose, you were a U.N. Commander, would YOU go to Texas, or South Central L.A. or ANYWHERE in the U.S. and try to take guns away from Americans?

Seriously?

As for Ali being blessed by God? Well he was a pretty good boxer and anti war activist, so yeah God blessing him would be appropriate.

Raymondf, the terrorists don't have to attack us again. Bush is doing their dirty work for them by undermining the constituion, authorizing torture, pardon Scooter, fear-mongering, spying on innocent Americans, etc. Bush is destroying what was great about America; he has raped the Constitution. Hopefully, our next president can undone much of the damage he has done. But I believe the terrorists are happy with what has happened since 9/11 under Bush's watch and feel they don't need to attack us when Bush is doing that himself.

Not to mention bleeding us dry fiscally. I never liked Reagan but one thing he did know: the Kremilin's ego in trying to keep up with the US and its own misadventure in Afghanistan would eventually bankrupt the USSR. We obviously haven't learned that lessen, and I think even the Great Communicator would be appalled.

At that time everyone thought it was going to be a short time even Democrats, but Osama Bin Laden, and the Taliban had other ideas. Would it be better if they came over here and strap bombs on and kill a city block worth of innocent people, or should we stay their and fight them.

what prey tell does or did OBL have to do with Iraq? And furthermore, it is THE primary responsibility Raymondf for THE commander in chief to be absolutely certain to weigh every eventuality, consider carefully the mission, covering all bases, beyond "shock and awe", understand the people and their traditions before you suppose, recklessly that hundreds of thousands of troops on their land will be greated with flowers strewn at their feet. That said, also....the Taliban is not in Iraq. BUT...is regrouping in Aghanistan, remember, the forgotten war? HMMM...interesting, that the most wanted man on the face of this earth escapes undetected for 7 yearsm while we fight a self induced quagmire in Iraq.

what exactly about having troops there prevents say 19 al quaeda operatives slipping away and doing something here? How exactly does that work? Why hasnt this strategy been used in the past? Say defending a fort.-- take all your troops put them in field somewhere where the indians (say) can attack and no indians will ever attack the fort even if it is empty and vulnerable. Are you people idiots??? It only takes a small commando group to make a terrorist attack.

Please look at your history Raymondf. OBL and Al Queda wasn't in Iraq when Bush attacked. They are now! But they are a local group; they will fight us there and not come over here. bid Laden will attack us again and probably here. Bush's war has done absolutely nothing to make anyone anywhere safer.

Hey, don't try to speak for me. I specifically remember telling a friend of mine in MAR 2003 that it's only natural that the Iraqis would 'take to the hills' (exact phrase used) and that it would not be a short conflict by any means. I also took great exception to the whole 'flight-suit-boy' act on the carrier and the self-ingratiating tone of that whole press conference -- including the banner, but especially the fact that the Navy took it upon themselves to help make the photo-op convincing by delaying the carrier from making port just outside the US. It was propaganda directed at US citizens and it was completely inappropriate. If Bush is not responsible than who is? After all, he is, he keeps telling us, 'the decider' and the Commander in Chief. When he touched down on the carrier and saw that banner, if he didn't tell them to take it down (he didn't) then he's responsible for it being up.

Raymond needs his meds everyone...easy on the lil fela...

Raymond, now calm down! Everything will be ok! We still
have the 2nd amendment so when the Taliban and Al-Qaida
come a shore, we can just mow them down before they
reach the heartland. Does that sound ok with you Raymond?

No worries...Everyone is spending their tax rebates on
firearms so we'll be ready to fight them over here. We felt
that this was a better option than using the Beijing Credit
Card...although we're still waiting for a response to up our
limit. We need a little wiggle room for our Naval excursion
with Iran! Now what will that banner say?

Gosh, it's either and evolution or a revolution folks!
Which one do you want?

Shows the "readiness" of his speech writers and advisers. It's an insult to call them "Afghani" - that's the name of the money. Properly they are referred to as "Afghans." "Iraqi" and Pakistani" are OK, so it's a common error.
