India's Baby-Dropping Ritual (VIDEO)

Believers in western India have been observing a bizarre ritual - they've been throwing their young children off a tall building to improve their health. The faithful have been observing the ritual at a shrine in Solapur, in western India's Maharastra, for more than five hundred years. They believe it will make their children strong and say no accidents have ever happened.

All jokes aside - snake-handling happens all over south and southwest, not just in West Virginia...and before any Mountaineers take offense, I grew up in WV and was forced to go to church when I was a kid. I never saw any rattlesnakes in church though, although we were told scary stories about those kinds of churches and taught that snakes were evil.

It's hard to document damage to the brain though. And this is undoubtedly happening even if they are catching the babies. The inside of the skull is not smooth like the outside. The inside has ridges and is rough surfaced. The brain has the consistency of Jello - outside the skull, it does NOT hold its shape, and it can move and twist in a fall like that. This is a very bad thing.

The damage is real and lifelong - it does not heal and it creates many problems for the injured.

On the one hand you have multinational outsourcing and BPO corporations, world class privately owned hospitals and and country that can launch sophisticated remote sensing satellites into orbit. On the other hand you have a deeply religious people whose rituals haven't changed in thousands of years.

Good points. Also, India has 8 billionaires in the Forbes top 100 richest people list while 300 million of its citizens live below the poverty line. Its absurd to generalize about the citizens of country of a billion people but its legitimate to question the inefficacy of a political system that excuses such terrible religious rituals.

This is a custom which wouldn't last long if they tried to practice it in the USA!
I imagine over the course of 5 centuries there must have been a significant number of ruptured little spleens, broken limbs and spinal cord injuries. I wonder what the psychological effect is. Being born out of a woman's body is traumatic enough for a little baby, with all those muscles pushing and shoving and choking you out of your warm little womb room. Maybe this is the male version of birthing?

Thank God we are so much better than this in America. While we spend one third of our budget on amassing ever more sofisticated weapons we only use them on those that deserve it. Even though our expenditures amount to more that the combined expenditures of the rest of the world that doesn't mean we are barbaric.

And just because we have the highest prison population in the entire world(Including China and Russia),both in real numbers and as a function of population, that does not mean we are barbaric. Just because those prisons are virtual hell holes where, violence, murder and rape are common place, that does not make us barbaric. While we throw people in prison for life for things that other civilized nations do not even consider crimes that does not make us barbaric.
