Baby Drop

Believers in western India have been observing a bizarre ritual - they've been throwing their young children off a tall building to improve their health. The faithful have been observing the ritual at a shrine in Solapur, in western India's Maharastra, for more than five hundred years. They believe it will make their children strong and say no accidents have ever happened.

Thanks for putting me on to this. I will add it to my enormously long and ever-growing list of reasons why I am an atheist. Beleif in god(s) sure does make people do crazy things!

Searching for evidence of God's existence by looking at peoples behavior, in most cases, is a flawed proposition. Maybe, one day you'll look up and see that there is one reason to believe.

I am with TocinoHumano on this one. I don't argue religion with people, but this is but one more reason I don't subscribe to ANY religion. Dropping those babies is nothing more than a test of the parent's devotion to their religion. I seriously doubt the infants ask them to do it for their well being.

I don't think TocinoHumano's remark shows he is looking for "god's existence" here. My guess is that he's comfortable in his non-belief. The point is: many people do crazy, abusive, illegal, and hurtful things under the auspices of religion. Take Texas, for example.

Whatever are you talking about? The sun? Yes. I believe in the sun. That's what I see when I look up... Oh, and clouds. I believe in clouds, too. Look up and see what??? Kinda like you look up and "see" "Santa Claus?" What IS the difference between God and Santa, anyway?
Me and TocinoHumano want to know!

Why do almost all the most messed up news stories always come out of india?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:02 AM on 05/01/2008

What you talking about? Florida has one of the messed up news stories? Everyday a crooked cop is crowned!

Hmm, let see... The baby with TWO FACES! The baby with 4 arms and 4 legs. The fully grown person that is like 1 foot tail. The woman on the train who had her child while she went to the bathroom and it went into the toilet and fell onto the train tracks. I could go on forever. I think these things are a little different then a crooked cop.

Un-frickin-believable.
All risk, no gain.
I'm normally pretty open to foreign customs and against official intervention into private matters, but this, in my view, is just plain stupid.
I'd LOVE to hear an opposing view attempting to justify it.

Whatever doesn't kill you will make you strong. (except for that in-between margin of
paralyzed, etc)

I'm really surprised by all the outrage. After all, we only act like we care about children in this country. Make sure they are born, but who cares after that if they get fed, clothed, educated, beaten or abused. Just make sure my taxes don't go up one penny but I'll give lip service to caring about the children.
