If you weren't aware, today is May Day! What is May Day, you might ask? Well, according to Wikipedia's May Day entry:

"May Day occurs on May 1 and refers to any of several public holidays.[1] In many countries, May Day is synonymous with International Workers' Day, or Labour Day, which celebrates the social and economic achievements of the labor movement. As a day of celebration, however, the holiday has ancient origins and can relate to many customs that have survived into modern times. Many of these customs are due to May Day being a cross-quarter day, meaning that it falls approximately halfway between a solstice and an equinox."

So, really it's just a random holiday where you can celebrate just about however and whatever you want!

Here are some great and craft ideas on how to celebrate May Day.

One of the most popularly known May Day traditions is to hang a basket full of spring flowers and/or other small gifts on a neighbor's doorknob. The trick is you don't want the neighbor to see you! If you get caught, you are supposed to get a kiss.

A popular activity on May Day is to decorate a pole with brightly colored ribbon or paper streamers. Some also add flowers and balloons. The pole is usually carried in a parade and then placed in the ground at a designated area. People then dance around the May pole, holding the ends of the streamers or ribbon in their hands.

In France, cows play an important role in May Day. The cows are led in parades with many flowers attached to their tails. The people watching the parade try to touch the cows; it is believed to be good luck.

Dismissing the day's importance to international labor, which is, by the way, overwhelmingly progressive. Nice.

And citing Wikipedia.
My students get an automatic F if they try to pass that off as research.

This is something that has been annoying me about this website. The Huffington wants to be a credible news source, and yet most of the time quote other news papers, wikipedia and post videos to take up space in their article. I thought they employed some of the greatest writers on the web, what happened?

Aaaahh.... ok, fertility, mother goddess, I get it. Great, as I'm a Celt who's married to an Irish American, this gives me an excuse to get my wife into bed. Again. Not that she'll complain. Do we have to go around sky-clad?

Interesting thing about this day.

President Eisenhower declared this Law Day and in fact the entire month of May is Law Month.

Funny thing that, he

It's not a random holiday; it's an age-old pagan sabbat! May Day, or Beltane to some, is the third in the trinity of Spring celebrations; its' about sexuality and fertility--the Joining of Two to make a Third. This day honors the Marriage of the Lord and the Lady.

Blessed Be!

I agree, it is one of the oldest holidays we celebrate! I love it though, how Americans call it "random" just because they never heard of it. Classic ignorance!

WALPURGISNACHT (April 30th)

May 1st 2008
Berlin awoke this morning to what will probably go down as the most astonishing occurrence in history:
O2 World (the arena and areal that's been under construction over the last several years) is gone! Not a trace to be seen!

Also missing is the new McD's in Kreuzberg and the new auto distributor across from Universal. Other things that have disappeared are too numerous to list here, though I should mention that the BASF atop the cube is gone; additionally, all the huge billboard-adverts covering the facades on buildings undergoing renovation have either vanished, or been replaced with the following message-- which was also in full-page form in all the newspapers this morning:

Dear Berliners,
You've certainly noticed big changes today, and lest you be fooled into thinking this is some vast terrorist conspiracy, I've taken the opportunity to distribute this admonition:

The repossession that you are witnessing is an action I've chosen to take because I can no longer stand by and watch my beautiful work be destroyed by crass antisocial manipulation.

The irony, of course, is the fact that I am so often the one who is used for the tooling of the masses to facilitate and justify the control that these businesses and their concomitant physical monstrosities represent.

I've waited long enough. I'll not go into the long list of destructive human construction and counterproductive human consumption upon which it feeds. Suffice it to say, it should suffice; the information you've needed to guide you along a healthy path has long been available and apparent to no avail.

But just to make it abundantly clear, I further submit this warning:
All automobiles parked along streets with trams will be "removed" within 30 days.

Happy May Day!

Love,
the God in whom you claim to believe

AAGGHH! It is NOT a random holiday! It is an ancient holiday which celebrates the return of summer, fertility, and sexuality. The labor and socialist holidays came much much later. They were most likely placed on May 1 exactly because May 1 had not been coopted by the Vatican, or anyone else.
However, to call it random is inaccurate. It is a specific ancient holiday!

Do you know how ancient? See my earlier post below (the first in this thread).

" The circumambulatory dance of the celebrants around the Maypole, in the course of which the ribbons are plaited together around the pillar, is just like the circular dances universally performed around cosmic trees. The ascent of the Maypole by someone who then dispenses 'goodies' from the top to the crowd is reminiscent of pole-climbing rites observed in numerous cultures. And the symbolic union of the 'king and queen of the May' is inseparable from the hieros gamos or 'holy marriage' consummated by a divine pair at the summit of the axis elsewhere. Deductive reasoning, then, suggests that the Maypole is best analysed as an example of the axis mundi."
