Update: As reported by Iowa Politics, Marty Parrish signed in to Sen. McCain's health care conference as a HuffPost reporter. Marty Parrish is not a HuffPost reporter or blogger, nor a contributor to HuffPost's OffTheBus. He was not asked to attend the McCain conference on our behalf, nor did he have any contact with HuffPost staff prior to the event.

At a town hall forum in Iowa yesterday, Sen. John McCain was asked about a story from Cliff Schecter's controversial recent book, The Real McCain, which alleges that during a 1992 campaign stop, McCain angrily called his wife a "trollop" and a "c**t" in front of aides and reporters.

Marty Parrish, a business owner in Des Moines, told OffTheBus's Keith Dinsmore that he asked McCain about the incident because he's concerned about how McCain's temper could impact his leadership.

"A guy who would call his wife a trollop and a c--t just because she had ruffled his hair in front of five guys is not only a jerk, but a dangerous hothead if he ever gets his finger on the button."

"And since the mainstream media has decided to give McCain a free pass, I decided to stand up and, if they gave me an open mike, ask the question that the press refuses to touched. Our country is in a serious crisis after nearly eight years of Bush, and America appears to be oblivious to the danger this guy (McCain) poses to our country."

Read the full and extensive interview with Marty Parrish here on OffTheBus, where you can also take a look at the flier Marty passed out at the event.

Here's the exchange from the forum:

Q: This question goes to mental health and mental health care. Previously, I've been married to a woman that was verbally abusive to me. Is it true that you called your wife a (expletive)?

McCain: Now, now. You don't want to... Um, you know that's the great thing about town hall meetings, sir, but we really don't, there's people here who don't respect that kind of language. So I'll move on to the next questioner in the back.

Story continues below

Schecter himself writes about the exchange at FireDogLake.

UPDATE: It turns out the man who asked the question is a Baptist minister worried about McCain's temper:

Clive businessman Marty Parrish was escorted from Sen. John McCain's town hall meeting by Des Moines police and members of the Secret Service after asking McCain if he had called his wife Cindy an expletive in 1992.

Parrish, an ordained Baptist minister who holds a master's degree in political science, was questioned by Secret Service agents before being released. He was not charged in the incident. Parrish asked whether McCain called his wife Cindy an expletive related to the female anatomy, as has been alleged in the book "The Real McCain," written by Dem strategist Cliff Schecter.

McCain's response got him a round of applause from the crowd: "There's people here who don't respect that kind of language, so I'll move on to the next questioner in the back."

In an interview with IowaPolitics.com, Parrish said his intentions were simple in posing the question to McCain. The former Joe Biden campaign worker stressed he is very concerned about the Republican presidential nominee's temperament.

"We have a man whose temper can get the best of him," Parrish said. "What I am worried about is his temper. Our country is in a serious crisis. This election is the most significant one since 1860. It appears America is asleep -- so I stood up and asked the question."

I totally missed the fact this guy is also an Obama supporter.

Must not have people thinking Obamabots could be so crass.

Must not. Must not. Must not.

McCain chose to dodge the question ... the reality is that he did call his wife a c**t and it was caught on tape.

I hope the media would bring it up during the general ... because if a man has such a temper that he is willing to call his wife that in public just because she was teasing him ... the public has a right to know.

McCain does have a bad temper.

That matters why? I'm trying to enter the mind-set of an ignoramus. Please help.

Marty Parrish and Keith Dinsmore both signed into the event as HuffPo correspondents. They both worked for th Biden campaign in Iowa. Do they know each other, and if so why didn't they disclose this for this article? I hope that Jay Rosen will address this issue. At minimum, there is the appearance of an ethics problem here.

Great opportunity for McCain to show the world he is honest & answer: "Yes I did, sir. But I regret it. It was a huge mistake."

But McCain did what Republicans do best during presidential campaigns: Like a typical Republican coward, he avoided the question while concurrently coloring the questioner as being unhinged.

How exactly did he "color the questioner as being unhinged?" He just ignored the questioner. The questioner did an excellent job of coloring himself as unhinged all by his ownself. And we have it on video! Good job, HuffPo and Obamabots.

The questioner asked a question. Only in the ridiculous world of the neocon, would asking a question be considered 'unhinged'

First off McCain probably can't remember what the word C*@T means, second he probably can't remember if he said it or not, and third he's thinking who the hell is Cindy?

You people crack me up.

Well, Algier, I think the point is, if he did in fact do it, not only what it says about McCain's character, but whether the nature of one's intimate relationships does in fact have bearing on one's ability to govern.

After all, isn't it Republican voters who've said over and over that a President's personal private life and the details of his (or her) intimate relationships are SO entirely relevant to his (or her) ability to run the country?

I sincerely hope it's not true, for everyone's sake, including Mrs.McCain's, but if it is, and that's the kinda big talking tough guy you Republicans want to run, somebody who in a flash of anger over seemingly nothing calls his beautiful wife a disgusting and humiliating name in public, just do us all one big favor.

Spare us the family values and divine moral superiority crap, this time, will you?

Sorry Luzi, he DID call her that....in public no less. Can you imagine what goes on behind closed doors?

That term has always been unacceptable to me, and if a man ever called me that name, I would never ever have anything to do with him agan.

When a man spews this particular word to berate a woman, it really demonstrates that he has ZERO...and I mean ZERO respect for women.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:18 AM on 05/05/2008

AlgerHiss ... this is difference because it's not just about what he called her ... but that he has a temper and that his temper can get the best of him.

A US president that can't control his temper can be very dangerous considering how much power he would have. One lapse in judgment can have great consequences.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:35 AM on 05/05/2008

Writing that particular insult off as trivial means to me that you probably haven't had a lot of experience around women.

It's been clearly documented that this man is not a Minister, was trying to curry favor with HuffPo and George Soros and was a reprehensible cad for using such a vulgar term in front of women and children. It has also been clearly shown that the book that carried that canard was financed by George Soros as part of a $40 million dollar effort to smear John McCain. HuffPo should be above such mud slinging, which reflects poorly on Arianna.

like a trollop
Geesh, this in front of others... ... what does he say in private ????

why would he be questioned by the SS? because he used an expletive in public?

There is no one who has come forward to confirm the claim that McCain even used the word...even though there were apparently dozens of reporters arond who would have witnessed it.

This is all just part of the $40 million Soros campaign of smear against McCain.

HuffPo puppets Dinsmore and Parrish have been caught in several lies.

he certainly has not denied it
why doesn't he just answer the question once and for all?

If someone accused you of that, wouldn't it be your knee-jerk reaction to set them straight?

No, I would not dignify this type of typical left wing childish behavior with a response, especially when there are dozens of children in the audience.

Parrish is obviously a disturbed man. McCain and the secret service both reacted well.

Well...it turns out that Dinsmore and Parrish worked together very closely in the Biden campaign. This combined with the fact that Parrish signed in to the event as a HuffPo contributer, as did Dinsmore, just make Dinsmore look all the more like a disreputable, dishonest hack.

Proud day for the HuffPo and the left, isn't it?

Why is it not a fair question? He did call her that in 1992 ... and it was caught on tape.

McCain missed an opportunity to apologize and put that issue to rest ... because it was come back up in the general when questions about his temper are asked.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:39 AM on 05/05/2008

If it's so ridiculous why did he dodge the question? Can you answer that? No? Didn't think so.

I don't care much for McCain, but it might be time we had a president who calls assholes what they are instead of just being one.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:50 PM on 05/04/2008

He did not answer the question.
By refusing to do so, he answered it.
So many people here are using characters and asterisks and other means to avoid typing the word cunt. Well, I won't.
Cunt is one of the most insulting words in the language.
If McCain has refused to deny calling his wife a cunt, do we really want a president who thinks so little of the mother of his children that he refers to her that way?
I think Cheney got a pass when he told Sen. Leahy to go fuck himself in the hallowed chambers of the Senate.
I don't think we ought to let McCain slide on the cunt thing.

It takes one to know one. Aside from the fact that none of it was true, and the man insulted all the women and children in the meeting. It shows how vulgar the far left is when they can't ask a question with out resorting to an obscenity.

Typical Republican response. Do not answer the question and then have the person who asked it removed from the room by force. They don't care who the person is who asked the question either. This man was a baptist Minister who asked a valid question. This is a man running on "family Values" and calling your wife nasty names in public is not exactly what I call good family values. I think it also highlights his inability to control his temper. Is this the man you want with his finger on that big red button? Not I!!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:49 AM on 05/04/2008

The man is not a Baptist Minister. The church he attended has put out a disavowal on their web site. There is only a bok financed by George Soros that printed that canard and no one who was there has validated it. It's ironic that the gutter mouths here at HuffPo take such delight in lying about someone they hate almost as much as President Bush.

McCain's nickname in school, well before he was tortured, is well known to be, McNasty, because he liked fist fighting, and was a known bully.
He laughed off that woman in the forum who asked him, "How are we going to beat the bitch." (Back when Clinton was front-runner.) And actually said, "That's a good question."
I would not be surprised in the least that McNasty would call his wife a çµn†, or give her a good slap in private if she were out of line. And, I wouldn't put it past Cindy to think she deserved it either. She did have an affair with, break up the marriage of, and then marry McNasty after all. She knew very well what she was getting and deserved.
McCain was an aviator in the navy, which makes him a sailor, and he has a foul mouth, just like one.
He has called several of his fellow senators a$$hole's, and told them to go ƒµçk themselves, and that's just how he speaks to his fellow republicans!
"I'm shocked, shocked, to find that (misogynistic cursing) is going on in here!"

Hey jerk, SOMEBODY has to ask the questions since your corporate media has no balls.

To quote the questioner - "We have a man whose temper can get the best of him," Parrish said. "What I am worried about is his temper. Our country is in a serious crisis. This election is the most significant one since 1860. It appears America is asleep -- so I stood up and asked the question."

Pathetic. Parrish is not "worried" about McCain. Parrish's goal was to disrupt the event and get his face on TV.

Parrish is not a HuffPoster, although he lied, and listed himself and his cameraman as one for the event.

Parrish is not an "ordained minister". He was "licensed" in ministry (whatever that means) at the age of 19. He has no degree in ministry, no training, no congregation, and does not preach.

The man is deceitful, foul-mouthed and dishonest, and he is this week's face of the Obama campaign. How is that working out?

What are you proud of?

Abu Ghraib?
Katrina relief?
WMDs?
Capturing Osama bin Laden?
Terri Schiavo?
The sanctity of your marriage?

No one is defending Abu Ghraib...as the left is doing with Parrish and Dinsmore.

The response to Katrina by the feds was incredible. It was the Deomcratic governor of Louisiana and the Democratic mayor of New Orleans that screwed up.

All intelligence pointed to the existence of WMD...which I predict will be found in Syria.

Bin Laden is dead.

Gee...stopping the torturous death by starvation of a human is a bad thing?

The sanctity of my marriage?
