The vast majority of Americans think things are going badly in the country, according to a new poll.

Seven in 10 people questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Friday say things are going badly, with only 30 percent saying things are going well.

President Bush, buoyed by a batch of economic news that wasn't as bad as expected, predicted Friday that consumers are on their way to better days.

"I know it's tough times, and I know you're having to pay more at the fuel pump than you want," Bush said. "But this economy is going to come on. I'm confident it will."

Last time I checked, Jimmy Carter didn't inherit a $5 Trillion SURPLUS and then turn it into a $3 Trillion DEFIFICT. And Jimmy Carter didn't start a war based completely on lies that has resulted in over 1 million people dead (over 4100 if you use republican logic and don't count the brown people) and the trashing of the American economy.

The HUBRIS of this is consistent, but staggering: we are broke, biggest deficit in history; no middle class (the foundation of our tax base from the inception of taxes); the war alone would preclude economic recovery; the dollar against the euro is essentially worthless...while the Fed keeps printing more; our hard assets are ownedby China, India, etc.; if the Chinese didn't buy our paper every month we would be history more obviously; the agenda underlying the NAFTA, to render the world a giant source of cheapabor to enriche the few is succeeding....forget, the disaprity of wealth exceeding that before The Great Depression.

Bush is either in lala land or just thinks we're all stupid. The president has access to the best economic advisers in the country, so how can he claim this wasn't foreseeable? My husband and I foresaw it. We used to talk about it all the time. In fact, I've heard other so-called experts say that what we were doing wasn't sustainable, and that the bottom was going to fall out. And now Georgie wants to talk about making those tax cuts permanent. You can't conduct a war, cut taxes, continue to drive up the debt, and allow financial markets to operate without oversight and not expect dire consequences.
