INDIANAPOLIS — Early voting in Indiana could offer some encouragement to presidential hopeful Barack Obama, who needs a victory in its upcoming primary after a tough few weeks on the campaign trail.

Obama victories in the Indiana and North Carolina primaries on May 6 could help him regain momentum in his nomination fight against Hillary Rodham Clinton. Obama has been on the defensive because of comments by his former pastor, Jeremiah Wright, and his own comments about people in small towns growing bitter.

About 20 percent of the 127,000-plus absentee ballots received as of early Friday were cast in three Indiana counties _ Marion, Monroe and Lake _ that political observers believe Obama is strongly favored to win.

Lake County has a large population of black voters and is in Chicago's shadow. Obama has typically won big among college-age voters, and Monroe County is the home of Indiana University in Bloomington. Obama's campaign sought out IU students with voter registration and early voting drives and a free Dave Matthews concert.

Robert Dion, a professor of American politics at the University of Evansville, said Obama has mounted an innovative campaign that's stressed early voting and his supporters appear more energized than those for Clinton.

"In a close race, modest advantages in organization can yield big results, and if Obama out-organizes the Clinton campaign on these absentee ballots, it would be a great boost to him," Dion said.

Three other Indiana counties _ St. Joseph, Vanderburgh and Vigo counties _ have amassed more than 20,000 early ballots between them, about 16 percent of the total absentees cast statewide.

Vigo County, which includes Terre Haute, is expected to go for Clinton because of its demographics and connections to popular Sen. Evan Bayh, who has campaigned aggressively with the former first lady.

Political analyst Robert Schmuhl said he senses that Clinton has the advantage heading into Tuesday's primary.

"I think any objective observer would say Senator Clinton has the momentum going into the last few days. In previous primaries she's done well during the final days as the undecided voters have made up their minds," the Notre Dame professor said.

Whatever Tuesday's final vote, Dion said Obama and Clinton are expected to basically split the state's 72 delegates.

"They're fighting over bragging rights," Dion said. "If he wins Indiana as well as North Carolina, which we expect him to win, he can say, 'I won both states.' And that's going to knock the wind out of Hillary Clinton."

Things are going according to plan...

******

I like the "run out the clock" strategy.

Don't debate her!

Stay in the "hope" and "change" zone defense.

Keep the Rev away, and hope the Rezko thing doesn't catch fire.

This will get enough "progressives" to get our guy into the general.

CHARACTER IS NOT AN ISSUE!!

IT IS A DISTRACTION!!

North Carolina as a small chance to go for the Democrats in November.

Indiana has no chance to go for the Democrats.

Therefore, North Carolina is more important.

The only thing about this article that makes any sense at all is the last sentence. IN is about bragging rights. The spread will be so tight that they'll pretty much split the delegates evenly. NC will be a big enough win for Obama that he'll regain the deletate lead that tightened up after PA.

And then, for those in the Democratic party who are reality-based, the contest is over. The nomination process that the DNC and all of the candidates accept is one based on delegates. You may gnash your teeth and rail against the process, but those are the rules we've got. In order for Clinton to pull even in delegates with Obama after today, she would need to win each of the remaining contests by a 85-15 spread. No sane person believes this is possible. Obama only needs 43% of the remaining uncommited superdelegates to go his way to clinch. Hillary needs over 80% of that same group to close the gap. None of the scenarios that give Clinton the win are within the realm of possibility.

This article follows the MSM meme that this is a "close race." Gotta keep those ad revenues flowing somehow! The truth is that the race is over. The only question remaining is, how will Clinton lose? Will she lose gracefully and support her party in November? Or will she go nuclear, ensuring that Obama loses to McCain and also ensuring the end of her own political career?

from the article:

"Early voting in Indiana could offer some encouragement to presidential hopeful Barack Obama, who needs a victory in its upcoming primary..."

bullshit. if it ws 60-40 it would make no difference in who wins the nomination. who wrote this crap anyways? James Carville? and isnt he needed on the set of the new X-Files movie?

this article was just bad.

Bill? Is that you?
You accuse Obama of lies? That is funny.
Let's talk about NAFTA - Bill brought us that and Hillary praised it at the time.
Let's talk about Bosnia - she knew it was so dangerous, she took Chelsea with her.
Let's talk about Iraq - She voted for war, and unlike Kerry and Edwards and others, won't admit she was wrong.
Let's talk about Bill taking money from Columbia for the trade deal.
Patriotic? Bill was a draft-dodger.

Yeah, two dirty liars for one....

No THIRD TERM.

If I'm going to take two for one, it'll be the Obamas over the Clintons any day. Both Barack and Michelle are intelligent, articulate and honest: exactly what America needs in their president and first lady.

And you're in a dream world. She can't , won't win and the "b" is making sure he won't either. It will backfire on her if she thinks she can run for President next time with no conflict. We are going to slam her like white on rice and she can take that to the bank.

She will never see the White House but to visit. Wait unti the FBI looks into the WVW robocall scam her campaign is involved in, which is called election tampering.

Obama is going to lose IN. The only question is by how much, my bet now is 8. And of course the Clinton campaign will spin it that is such a big deal, when she's led from the very first poll that came out weeks ago.

So yeah, whatever Clinton people.

And I predict the delegate count will be fairly close, maybe a 3 gain by Hillary.

I love the tone of this article. It's as if Hillary is the decisive leader and that Obama is in a must win situation on Tuesday. What a joke. It's over, Barack Obama is the nominee. She cannot cheat her way to victory. Let's move on.........

she works for it.

same percentage of blacks voted for clinton x 2, kerry, gore, carter and JFK so what's your point.
Women voting for Nillary, I bet many of them are surprised to see that the right to life folks are coming out against Obama, which could only mean that Nillary agrees with them?

Teaching opec a lesson, we will be in far better physical shape with no oil. We will be like china was, walking and biking lots more.

Nuking Iran has many problems like killing Christians and Jews too for starters.

gas holiday = costlier gas down the road, loss of jobs for the road workers, oil companies sure to raise the price to protect their profits against future crazed attacks of Nillary.

What is cheating? Would you call election fraud and felony purgery cheating? Don't believe me just go to www.LASUPERIORCOURT.org and look up the case file BC304174. Hillary is exempt from testifying until November, the judge is a friend. Bill, however, and Chelsea are supposed to be deposed next month. This fraud case involves her race for the senate. There are several more instances, like she was fired from the Watergate commission for lying and other unethical behavior. You can check on that also at Jerry Zeifman's website, he was in charge of the commission.
Who was it who was talking about the good old days, we could always talk about White Water, impeachment, etc.

Now you want to insult black voters too.

Nice!

*Ahem*

That's nice, but this contest isn't about the popular vote. It's about the delegates, of which Obama has a clear, unsurmountable lead.

As for Florida and Michigan, I'm astounded at how proudly Hilary supporters are embracing these scenarios. by the DNC rules, the contests were unjust. Before they were even held, the DNC announced they would not seat the delegates. Neither candidate campaigned in either state, and Obama was NOT ON THE BALLOT in Michigan - that's not "deciding" to go with the uncommitteds, that's called respecting party rules. Because Hilary is trying to cheat and gain those votes, party solutions have been offered that would give Obama the uncommitted votes in each state.

And once again, it might give her a slight lead in the popular vote, but not in delegates. This game is about delegates, and superdelegates. Obama leads in the former, and he has drastically reduced her lead in the latter.

Sigh. I don't even know why I bothered to respond to such an obvious troll.

Stuck on Stupid. Sad, Sad, Sad. The rules were set on Florida and Michigan before voting began, Hillary agreed to them. Now she wants to change it. If she were leading anyone with any sense knows she would not want them counted. As for Obama not having accomplished anything to make him president, I beg to differ, as would countless military families in this country. Before spreading lies take the time to do your research. Barack Obama has sponsored legislation into law so that wounded soldiers don't have to pay to eat and for telephone calls home while in hospitals recuperating. This is just the tip of the iceberg, the man is a workaholic and has substantial legislative experience, with his years in the Illinois Senate, twice as much as Hillary. She counts her time in the White House as experience. She had no clearance and made no policy, nor decisions. In order to come up with 35 years, she counts her over fifteen years working in a law firm. She worked on Wal-Mart's board and never voiced any opposition to their terrible labor policies. Also, it's odd that you say "the Clintons," she wants the credit for Bill's good, but not the bad that she also pushed, like Nafta. I thought only Hillary's name appears on the ballot.

HIllary Clinton's latest, on the record comments '"TO OBLITERATE IRAN"
causes every voter to hold their breath & hold a vote for HRC.

This is EXACTLY what Bush sounded like as a man on a mission impossible in Iraq.

DON'T LOOK THE OTHER WAY @ HILLARY'S CALL FOR OBLITERATING ANOTHER MIDDLE EAST COUNTRY!

Whether this is political pandering OR she means this, as SHE DID MEAN TO GIVE BUSH A BLANK CHECK FOR IRAQ, voters must say NO!

SHE IS CAUSING INTERNATIONAL CONCERN, cited in the UN.

If her war mindset still present, American chances at regaining respect in the worldview are again under seige, this time by a Democrat behaving like a demigogue.

THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA MUST LOOK AT HER REPEATED REMARKS AND GIVE THEM COVERAGE.

As far as Sen Clinton is concerned : those who don't understand their own history, are DOOMED to repeat it.

Voting Obama is a vote for a second strong chance in the world.

Terrorists salivate at HRC since SHE IS NOW THE KIND OF SO CALLED LEADER to encourage terrorist cause by FLAUNTING IMPERIALISM.

IF YOU ARE IN INDIANA OR N. CAROLINA, you have a unique chance to SEND A MESSAGE TO HILLARY THAT WE ARE DONE WITH COWBOY INSTIGATIONS.

If you want more war, the draft initiated to cover 3 fronts, more trillions going to a war and not to our ailing country...then vote HRC.

Are we not ready to reclaim our dignity?

she's become a sad, hollow shell... just like our Texas "W" shell...

there's no "there" there... she's an apparition... a ghost... as changeable as a wraith...

She 'morphs' so effortlessly.... there is no substance to cast a vote for.

My hero's aren't ghosts.

Next... expect to see her slamming shots... in a hard-hat... with a cigarette hanging casually from the corner of her mouth.
