INDIANAPOLIS — Early voting in Indiana could offer some encouragement to presidential hopeful Barack Obama, who needs a victory in its upcoming primary after a tough few weeks on the campaign trail.

Obama victories in the Indiana and North Carolina primaries on May 6 could help him regain momentum in his nomination fight against Hillary Rodham Clinton. Obama has been on the defensive because of comments by his former pastor, Jeremiah Wright, and his own comments about people in small towns growing bitter.

About 20 percent of the 127,000-plus absentee ballots received as of early Friday were cast in three Indiana counties _ Marion, Monroe and Lake _ that political observers believe Obama is strongly favored to win.

Lake County has a large population of black voters and is in Chicago's shadow. Obama has typically won big among college-age voters, and Monroe County is the home of Indiana University in Bloomington. Obama's campaign sought out IU students with voter registration and early voting drives and a free Dave Matthews concert.

Robert Dion, a professor of American politics at the University of Evansville, said Obama has mounted an innovative campaign that's stressed early voting and his supporters appear more energized than those for Clinton.

"In a close race, modest advantages in organization can yield big results, and if Obama out-organizes the Clinton campaign on these absentee ballots, it would be a great boost to him," Dion said.

Three other Indiana counties _ St. Joseph, Vanderburgh and Vigo counties _ have amassed more than 20,000 early ballots between them, about 16 percent of the total absentees cast statewide.

Vigo County, which includes Terre Haute, is expected to go for Clinton because of its demographics and connections to popular Sen. Evan Bayh, who has campaigned aggressively with the former first lady.

Political analyst Robert Schmuhl said he senses that Clinton has the advantage heading into Tuesday's primary.

"I think any objective observer would say Senator Clinton has the momentum going into the last few days. In previous primaries she's done well during the final days as the undecided voters have made up their minds," the Notre Dame professor said.

Whatever Tuesday's final vote, Dion said Obama and Clinton are expected to basically split the state's 72 delegates.

"They're fighting over bragging rights," Dion said. "If he wins Indiana as well as North Carolina, which we expect him to win, he can say, 'I won both states.' And that's going to knock the wind out of Hillary Clinton."

WELCOME INDIANA HATE MONGERING, SUSPICIOUS SEEKING, TRUTH DON'T EXIST, WHITE SHEET WEARING, TONY ZIRKLE SUPPORTERS

I'm a life long resident of this wonderful state and have been wondering where all you folks been hiding out on the Huff Post.

When I did door to door canvassing for a non-profit, watching a black canvasser get picked up by the police 3 times a night and making sure we didn't canvass in a town that had a place called Kruglers Korner Klub, there was a certain type of "folks" speak you needed to use to get through to these folks. Obama needs to start using one or two word phrases, like "massive retaliation" or "elitist", or better yet have a group of IN Bubbas speak for him.

By the By, Tony Zirkle is an IN candidate who recently spoke at a NAZI rally.

I drove thru Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania twice last year and was amazed. And the Democrats are going to nominate a Black Man to run for President! Even if they get over their genetic bigotry in the rust belt, they would never vote for someone from Hawaii. Oh yeah, you haven't even thought of that one yet... in February he was changed from mixed-race all American to Black. Sometime this summer the press will discover he grew up in Hawaiamd he'll become exotic. And these people won't even vote for someone from massachusits

What Hillary needs to do is search for the name of a psychologist to help her with her lying problem. That chick really believes what she says.

I resent your use of the word LYING - as I understand it she simply mis-spoke. We all should accept the fact that each of us have similar 'mis-spoke' episodes almost daily. If anyone thinks i'm being disingenious (sp) then you can just assume i am having one of tose mis-spoke episodes.

After Indiana and North Carolina she will be even in popular vote and save a few elected delegates that will not count until Michigan and Florida is resolved! Hillary will assume control at the end of June!

Swimming stealthily in the current under the surface news reports, is the salient fact the Reverend Wright's denunciation by Obama followed shortly with Press obloquy of his motives has initiated a schism inter alia among the black electoret ubiquitously!
I predict in sibylline rapture as the sage of Baltimore that Hillary will recieve 55% of the black vote in North Carolina!
It seems utterly unbelievable to certain white folks that the North Carolina black community eschews Obama's criticism of his Pastor and take solace in Reverend wrights radical black religious philosophy!
Hillary win squeak out a victory in North Carolina and win Indiana handily by double digits!

As Terry says we will know the nominee by the middle of June and it will be Hillary with Obama as V.P.

LOL! He's iving his speech in Indiana & talking about taxing the oil companies more. Gee, I guess the oil comapanies won't raise their prices then. My 6 cylinder work van would save $68.00 a month if we get the gas holiday. Everyone I've seen against Clinton's way doesn't need to worry about the cost of gas or food. The last I looked gas was finally going down in the last 5 days.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:23 PM on 05/04/2008

Hillary's gas tax "vacation" is a straight up lie!. There is no way she can or will get that tax break through Congress . Even if she did Dubya would veto it. Hillary is playing you! She believes that she can say anything to folks who live paycheck to paycheck because they aren't intelligent enough to understand the game she is playing.
Really....it's a total dis'.

Pappy Wright? I never saw a video before where he called him Pappy before. Plus the dontvoteobama.net link? And Fox is digging even deeper tonite. It seems that Bush clone Hannity also studied theology. He's really enjoying this Wright-Obama thing.

My pappy Rev. Wright........Well, at least that is a new one. I always said Rev. Wright acted more like a hurt father figure. The Rev, handed him the run for president, I guess now he figures he can take it away.

Rev. Wright is a non-issue and I am writing every paper that is still talking about this to tell them I want to hear about the real issues:

The war
The economy

That's for starters.

Hillary does not want to talk about the war.

Not really, since most of the newspapers in PA endorsed him and he lost there by 9.4%. Until folks put aside their personal prejudices, all these endorsement are worth squat.

At 3:16 am this Sunday morning, it occurred to me this early turnout result may have been published to provoke a Bradley effect- Particularly in light of "the pivotal role republicans are expected to play in the Indiana primary," or words to that effect.

Well, I did occur to me at 3:16 am.

The opponent in the end is McCain and not Hillary. Don not relish in victories for the weaker candidate.

Hillary may be a Democratic McCain but she will get the troops home, start universal health coverage, and most important, not appoint right wing Supreme Court Justices who can really negate the Constitution. Believe you me, you ain't seen nuthin' yet as to how far Right the Supreme Court can go.

She may be the Devil, but she is a Democrat and that forgives a lot.

Purity and being forthright and honest are no virtues here. Victory is the ONLY goal and the Democratic Party must do WHATEVER it can to win.

Sorry, but she a Dem in name only. Bloomberg was a Republican in name only, but he had a lot of Dem beliefs. She will get us in a war with Iran and she has already shown a hostile attitude toward China. The things she says now have consequences should she get into office.

Because IN shares its media market with Chicago, Obama has a very good chance of winning in IN. To make a big impact she needs to win it by a 2 to 1 margin which she can't do. She couldn't even do that in PA. He leads in every possible way right now and is fast gaining on her in supers. Her argument that he is unelectable is utterly without merit. Just ask Joe Andrew.
