INDIANAPOLIS — Early voting in Indiana could offer some encouragement to presidential hopeful Barack Obama, who needs a victory in its upcoming primary after a tough few weeks on the campaign trail.

Obama victories in the Indiana and North Carolina primaries on May 6 could help him regain momentum in his nomination fight against Hillary Rodham Clinton. Obama has been on the defensive because of comments by his former pastor, Jeremiah Wright, and his own comments about people in small towns growing bitter.

About 20 percent of the 127,000-plus absentee ballots received as of early Friday were cast in three Indiana counties _ Marion, Monroe and Lake _ that political observers believe Obama is strongly favored to win.

Lake County has a large population of black voters and is in Chicago's shadow. Obama has typically won big among college-age voters, and Monroe County is the home of Indiana University in Bloomington. Obama's campaign sought out IU students with voter registration and early voting drives and a free Dave Matthews concert.

Robert Dion, a professor of American politics at the University of Evansville, said Obama has mounted an innovative campaign that's stressed early voting and his supporters appear more energized than those for Clinton.

"In a close race, modest advantages in organization can yield big results, and if Obama out-organizes the Clinton campaign on these absentee ballots, it would be a great boost to him," Dion said.

Three other Indiana counties _ St. Joseph, Vanderburgh and Vigo counties _ have amassed more than 20,000 early ballots between them, about 16 percent of the total absentees cast statewide.

Vigo County, which includes Terre Haute, is expected to go for Clinton because of its demographics and connections to popular Sen. Evan Bayh, who has campaigned aggressively with the former first lady.

Political analyst Robert Schmuhl said he senses that Clinton has the advantage heading into Tuesday's primary.

"I think any objective observer would say Senator Clinton has the momentum going into the last few days. In previous primaries she's done well during the final days as the undecided voters have made up their minds," the Notre Dame professor said.

Whatever Tuesday's final vote, Dion said Obama and Clinton are expected to basically split the state's 72 delegates.

"They're fighting over bragging rights," Dion said. "If he wins Indiana as well as North Carolina, which we expect him to win, he can say, 'I won both states.' And that's going to knock the wind out of Hillary Clinton."

Rev. Wright getting lots of free airtime today, MSNBC did a 1 hour whitewash piece about Obama and Wright, but Hannity did a REAL 1 hour show about Obama and Wright, I hope all the voters were watching and learning about Obama.

Hannity hasn't done a REAL piece of reporting in his entire career. He is a strong operative for the neo-cons and rarely takes any steps to hide it. His harping on Rev, Wright is an example of that

Hannity doing a REAL PIECE OF $&!T is the norm.

Hankwhatever, you have lost any virtual shred of credibility for saying Hannity did some real reporting.

Hank, will you please disassociate yourself from Hannity? His statements and relations with white supremacy aren't too healthy.

Dan Abrams presented a factual review of the events surrounding the Wright controversey, with no spin. Although I didn't watch Hannity - and never do - I'm sure that it was the spin that captivated your attention. I'm beginning to believe that you are a Hannity and Limbaugh fan, and it's not surprising that you are supporting the Republican candidate ... Oops! I mean, Senator Clinton!

Sean Hannity has lost all credibility with most intelligent, insightful and objective Americans, and I doubt if we can ever LEARN anything from him, least of all about Senator Obama, whose candidacy he has been trying to destroy since the primary began. But it's become clear where you get all of your talking points and "OBAMA HATES AMERICA" quotes from.

Over and over and over again. It played again this afternoon. Does that make it twice or three times in one day? My day isn't over yet.

HELP! Does anyone know which Indiana Democratic governor candidate is more supportive of Obama? I'll be voting in the IN Dem Primary on Tuesday, and I want to take this into account when voting for a candidate for governor.. I contacted both campaigns (Schellinger and Thompson), and both said that their candidate has not officially endorsed either Obama or Clinton. However, someone in the Thompson office did say that the candidates do lean in different directions, paralleling the presidential race. Will someone please tell me which way the gubernatorial candidates lean?

marco34la posts: The Clintons were 1st dems to get the White House in 12 years and first democratic administration to serve 2 terms in 50 years. They un-did reaganomics, the bush war, turned the deficit into a surplus, created jobs, and got very close to brokering a peace deal in the middle east.

Not they marco341a, Bill was President, not Hillary. Bill Clinton did some good things, however he also did some things that are why this country is in such bad shape today. He also saw to it that dems lost control in the Senate for the first time since 1964. It has been gridlock since. And he also lied to every single American about his affair. So if you want Hillary to be credited with the good, you best include the bad.
And again, Hillary was not President. The only real policy she tried to get through was health-care. She was so stubborn about her plan she was unwilling to compromise at all. One of the reasons she is reviled by Republicans, especially those who tried to reach across the aisle to her to try and work health-care through.

saying Hillary is qualified to be president because she was with Bill Clinton when he was in office is like saying Yoko Ono was qualified to be in the Beatles becuase she was with John Lennon.

we all know how THAT turned out!

Of course they are. How else can anyone justify the continued coverage of Wright, as opposed to the war in Iraq, the Economy, energy conservation, pollution, torture and who is responsible, any number of possible criminal acts by the current administration, and the list goes on of actual things that affect American lives evry day.
Anyone who doesn't think the MSM has an agenda is rather naive.
It is truly sickening.

The irony of it all, I saw Hillary Clinton on yesterday beckoning people to put money on a philly named Eight Belles in the Kentucky Derby today. The horse broke two ankles and had to be euthanized. Her comparing herself to that horse is comedy that couldn't have been written better. (No offense to the horse) RIP eight belles! Check out www.drudgereport.com

They should shoot Hillary too. It's the only way to get her out of race. They shoot horses, don't they?

get this! as if the clintons haven't traumatized, used up, pimped out their own daughter enough:
"I hope that everybody will go to the derby on Saturday and place just a little money on the filly for me," Sen. Clinton told supporters in Jeffersonville, Ind., ABC News reports. "I won't be able to be there this year - my daughter is going to be there and so she has strict instructions to bet on Eight Belles."
The cheers for the winner's decisive victory were cut short when Eight Belles, the runner-up, was euthanized on the track minutes after the race when she collapsed with two broken front ankles.
Chelsea was forced to witness the euthanasia of the horse her mother gave her strict instructions to bet on ON THE TRACK!

yeah, at the same time she's trivializing people's economic woes by suggesting that their saving $2-4/week would make a big difference in their lives, she's encouraging them to blow their hard-earned money at the track.

Go Obama

AHHH...........the filly was actually euthanized 10 minutes after the race (I would never joke about such tragedy as I love these noble animals) but it makes one wonder about the metaphor.

Hillary also say she is just like ROCKY, who lost to a black man in the original ROCKY (the only one worth remembering: all the rest are rehash dreck) to a committee vote.

I'm afraid to find out if I'm unbanned!!! I'm afraid that if I use my former username, they'll ban me again ... for doing something I know not of!! But I've noticed that some people were never banned at all. So what was that about? Some of those who were not banned are those who post the most profane and rude personal comments! Didn't the rules apply to them too? And like nurseattorney, I never used profanity and always tried to be reasonable in my posts. In fact, I was posting for hours one day, and when I tried to post to another article, I WAS BANNED! Okay ... I'm over it! But I still don't understand!

And why can't I "refresh" the page any longer???

I ws banned for two weeks, never figured out why. I never use profanity and follow all the posting rules. However, I think I did a post about members of my family who are, essentially, poor white trash, and that may have gotten me the hook. Anyway, like magic I was restored. Go figure.

ps Black Liberation Theology is NOT a racist, separatist movement. That interpretation is actually a racist manipulation of fact. Rather it was an application of theology to work against racism, discrimination directed at the black community. There are alot of elements which probably seem alien and threatening to many whites, but as Wright said, 'The god that supports the righteousness of the people on the deck of the slave ship is not the same god that supports the slaves yearning for freedom below.
