INDIANAPOLIS — Early voting in Indiana could offer some encouragement to presidential hopeful Barack Obama, who needs a victory in its upcoming primary after a tough few weeks on the campaign trail.

Obama victories in the Indiana and North Carolina primaries on May 6 could help him regain momentum in his nomination fight against Hillary Rodham Clinton. Obama has been on the defensive because of comments by his former pastor, Jeremiah Wright, and his own comments about people in small towns growing bitter.

About 20 percent of the 127,000-plus absentee ballots received as of early Friday were cast in three Indiana counties _ Marion, Monroe and Lake _ that political observers believe Obama is strongly favored to win.

Lake County has a large population of black voters and is in Chicago's shadow. Obama has typically won big among college-age voters, and Monroe County is the home of Indiana University in Bloomington. Obama's campaign sought out IU students with voter registration and early voting drives and a free Dave Matthews concert.

Robert Dion, a professor of American politics at the University of Evansville, said Obama has mounted an innovative campaign that's stressed early voting and his supporters appear more energized than those for Clinton.

"In a close race, modest advantages in organization can yield big results, and if Obama out-organizes the Clinton campaign on these absentee ballots, it would be a great boost to him," Dion said.

Three other Indiana counties _ St. Joseph, Vanderburgh and Vigo counties _ have amassed more than 20,000 early ballots between them, about 16 percent of the total absentees cast statewide.

Vigo County, which includes Terre Haute, is expected to go for Clinton because of its demographics and connections to popular Sen. Evan Bayh, who has campaigned aggressively with the former first lady.

Political analyst Robert Schmuhl said he senses that Clinton has the advantage heading into Tuesday's primary.

"I think any objective observer would say Senator Clinton has the momentum going into the last few days. In previous primaries she's done well during the final days as the undecided voters have made up their minds," the Notre Dame professor said.

Whatever Tuesday's final vote, Dion said Obama and Clinton are expected to basically split the state's 72 delegates.

"They're fighting over bragging rights," Dion said. "If he wins Indiana as well as North Carolina, which we expect him to win, he can say, 'I won both states.' And that's going to knock the wind out of Hillary Clinton."

HILLARY HAS LOST THE ENTIRE BLACK VOTE....FOREVER !!!

This is the message being sent by blacks to the DNC (and the superdelegates). There is no way Hillary will defeat McCain without the support of Black America aka the guaranteed Democratic vote. Hillary started out with 82% of the black support. But as Blacks learned more about her (Goldwater Girl...Against Civil Rights Act '64....It was LBJ...Not MLK....etc) combined with Bill's (...fairy tale....Jessie Won S.C. too...etc.)...blacks were shocked beyond repair. (remember....we luved Bill so much we called him 'The First Black President')....but never again....WHERE'S THAT STORY. This has nothing to do with Obama !!!! We (blacks) have awakened to the truth about the Clintons......

p.s. Blacks4Barack.org started in Feb. 2007 (Greg Jones) when VERY few blacks were for Obama.....they were ALL for Hillary !!!!! We knew that Obama was the best person to run our country and bring our troops home and that is why we started our grassroots organization. (Not because he's black...but because he's most qualified) The more black voters learned about Obama...the more they liked him.... the more they learned about the Clintons....the angrier they got !!!!!!!!!!!!!! We appreciate our friends of ALL races....who are working together....for the very best candidate....to put America on the right track.....Barack Obama ! THANK YOU !

Greg Jones i agree with you. I have read and heard more and more chatter about the AA voters will not under any circumstances ever vote for a Clinton again. I also know that there are just as many NA, Asian, as well as white voters that will not vote for Clinton. Nader or McCain will be the ones that benefit from these votes if HRC steals this nomination.
People have realized that HRC does not care one bit about the American People, she only cares about her self, power and greed. She is one very evil cold hearted person. Too bad for her that there is millions of us that can see through her phony bullshit.

I'm white, but in talking to my African American friends, I'd definitely agree that I'm hearing the same thing-- they feel betrayed and used by the Clintons and will not vote for them again. If Hillary is the nominee, they won't vote McCain but they will stay home. Hillary is just too polarizing, we need someone who will build bridges, not burn them. Go Obama!

I agree gregjones. Black America was behind Senator Clinton at the beginning of this primary campaign. Although many black Americans supported Senator Obama as well, their loyalty to the Clintons was still intact, and many were torn between the two candidates. But as the campaign progressed, the Clintons showed their true color, no pun intended. They took the African American vote for granted and wrongly assumed that they could use race as a tactic to divide the electorate. Their attempt to marginalize Senator Obama as "the black candidate" and to diminish his electability because he is black (Governor Rendell, Robert Jones, Geraldine Ferraro) was an insult to the entire black community. This, coupled with their other "kitchen sink" tactics proved fatal to them among black voters, many of whom will not support her in the general if she is the nominee, and many who will never support her for any other elected office. Black Americans support Senator Obama for the same reasons white Americans and others support him - he is the better candidate. But when the Clintons chose to trash him as a black man, they trashed every black man and woman, and we aren't going to forget it.

Anyone who enters competitive democratic elections with a prior sense of entitlement is more likely to resort to dirty tactics and by-all-means-approach to win, and in the process, undermines the democratic spirit on the alter of personal ambitions. Guess who?

This would be an important victory for Obama. A double win on the May 6 primaries would bring a wave of superdelegate support . i would love to see a 7-3 win in the next 10 primaries.

Let's wrap this up and go on to beat MCCain in the fall.

Even if Obama is not your first choice now, your vote in his column of the popular vote would be a gesture of hope for a Democratic victory in November. Doing so will help unite the Democratic Party and give us our best chance for a win in the general election.

As a California voter in June of 1992, I cast my vote not for Jerry Brown, my governor and favorite candidate, but instead for an inexperienced, charismatic governor of a small state, Bill Clinton. It was clear that he would be the nominee, and I wanted to add my little boost to strengthen him going into the convention and the fall election.

Thank you for your consideration.

If the perception is widespread that Obama won the delegate count but lost the popular vote, it will weaken our Democratic nominee and cause feelings of resentment among Clinton supporters. Our best hope of winning in the fall is with a strong nominee who was fairly chosen because he won the most pledged delegates and the most popular votes. The large popular vote expected for Clinton in Puerto Rico may make Obama fall short in the popular vote.

If you've concluded, as I have, that our likely nominee, Senator Barack Obama, is worthy of your vote in the fall, I urge you to consider voting for him May 6. I think it is a wise move for everyone who hopes for a Democratic victory in the fall. (cont)

It is the most pledged delegates not votes. Period !!!!!

Indiana and North Carolina Democrats, your help is needed to avert a trainwreck awaiting us in Puerto Rico. In the U.S. territory, citizens do not vote in presidential general elections, but they are given a voice in the Democratic primary.

Puerto Rico's Democratic party decided, on March 8 of this year, to hold a primary rather than a caucus to allocate it's 55 delegates. This decision was made after it became clear that in a close contest, the total popular vote -- no matter how skewed a figure, due to the mix of primary and caucus states -- would become an important number in discussions about the nomination. States that had already had their caucuses, in full accordance with the rules established before the primary season began, did not have the re-do option.

Colorado and Puerto Rico have been allocated the same number of pledged delegates, 55. With Puerto Rico holding a primary with an expected turnout of at least a million voters, its popular vote will likely equal the total caucus votes of Colorado PLUS the primary votes of South Carolina, New Hampshire, Delaware, and Utah, combined. Puerto Rico will thus have a popular vote equivalent vote strength of 160 pledged delegates, rather than their allocated 55.(cont)

"Why I Believe in Barack Obama"

I believe in Barack Obama because he has motivated me to believe again. He has helped me believe in the premise of hope. His inspirational words, background and charisma are testimates to the ideas, ideals and opportunities that I, for one reason or another, had forgotten with regards to this country. As a 26 year old I have found myself involved in politics unlike ever before. Not only because I have been inspired, but because I see the need, desire and craving for change all throughout the nation. But the difference that sparked something within myself, was not his moving speeches or his voting record, but his ability to unite people in a common goal. He never told me that he would solve all our problems or change Washington DC on his own, but rather allowed us to believe in ourselves to make a difference. He rallied people on the idea and premise of "yes WE can" not "let ME show you". He revitalized my passion and understanding that It is going to take all of us playing a part to rebuild the mess that has become the United States of America.

When people ask me why I care so much about politics this year. About why I canvas and make phone calls. About why I have donated money to a campaign for the first time in my life. I have one simple answer for them. Because I believe.

Thank you so much for this! People are throwing around the word "elite" like it's a bad word now. As Jon Stewart pointed out, "elite" means the best, the cream of the crop, top-notch, and who wouldn't want these ideals attributed to our president? Some of us are so gullible, and we use words like "elite" or "elitist" without even understanding the meaning of the words, and I could name a whole list of words that have been bastardized over the last seven years by the Bush administration ... such as "patriot" or "liberal" or even "Christian." They defined the words to fit their twisted narrative, and Americans bought into it. "Racist" is another word that comes to mind. But, contrary to what Hillary said, words ARE important, and when misused, they can change our perspective of reality.

FROM ABC NEWS:

Hillary and Bayh decry China's acquisition of Magnequench, a former Indiana defense company-- ignoring Bill's role in the sale.

"We've got to elect a president next January who's going to remember Magnequench," Clinton told voters. Blaming the Bush administration for the sale. As it turns out Bill Clinton approved the sale in 1995.

Andy Albers, a former vice president of Magnequench, said he received a phone call from Clinton's campaign to go over key details of Clinton's Valparaiso event before it happened on April 12, 2008.

"I told them all the truth, but it didn't go anywhere," Albers told ABC News. "Evan Bayh and Hillary Clinton are living in some false reality here, making all these false accusations."

Why must Hillary lie to gain votes if she is so much more qualified than Barack Obama to be president?

Would she manage the U.S. economy like she's managed her own campaign? Despite coming into this race with all of the advantages (name recognition, tons of money from rich donors, the Clinton political organization, a gigantic lead in the polls and strong Democratic establishment ties), she is losing the delegate count, the popular vote and has run her campaign into near bankruptcy. Great job!

Right. McHillary is spending $1.10 for every dollar her campaign takes in, as opposed to Barack Obama, who's spending only $.75 for every dollar his campaign takes in. Even if Hell were to freeze over and she won the nomination, her coffers for November would be empty. Barack Obama already has $9 Million set asside for the general election.

excuse me, but the Democratic party is NOT Radical Left. You might be, but the "Party" is not. The Democratic party is being destroyed by the radical left and their aggressive approach. The bedrock of the party are MODERATES. That is true of BOTH parties. BOTH parties have been marginalized and polarized by the radical factions both left AND right in their parties. Those bedrock voters will come together and vote HILLARY and our country will be pulled together at it's CENTER leaving the radical factions of both parties on the fringes, where they belong. The last thing our country needs is ANOTHER RADICAL only this time one on the left instead of the right. Everything in MODERATION always works best.

The fact that Hillary would recover the lost federal gasoline excise tax money from the oil companies is a very good idea, if Bush would agree to it, because it would not throw about 300,000 highway construction workers out of work. However, the reduced tax is not likely to result in lower prices as refineries are already producing at capacity. The price of a commodity that is in fixed supply -- as gasoline is this summer -- is set by consumer demand. The price will not come down just because the tax has been reduced because motorists will pay what they are paying right now, or even more. As demand is going to increase but supplies will not increase, consumers will end up paying more. Barack Obama understands this. The amazing thing to me is that both Hillary Clinton and John McCain said the tax reduction would help farmers. They are both wrong. Since the farmers don't pay the excise tax, the effect of a tax decrease to motorists would be a price increase for everyone, including farmers. This is true whether or not the lost tax revenues are recovered from the oil companies.
