CRAWFORD, Texas — President Bush, defending his record and his rhetoric, said Saturday that his administration has been "clear and candid" about the nation's economy.

"We saw the economic slowdown coming, we were up front about these concerns with the American people, and we've been taking decisive action," Bush said in his weekly radio address.

The president's comments appeared at least partly in response to a drumbeat of criticism from Democratic leaders, who say his view of the economy is rosy and unrealistic.

Bush sounded an upbeat tone following a modest uptick of economic news this week.

The economy grew in the first quarter of the year, but only by a meager 0.6 percent. Yet it was not the contraction that some analysts feared. Employers slashed fewer jobs in April than they had in earlier months. The unemployment rate in April also fell slightly.

"No temporary setbacks can hold back the most powerful force in our economy _ the ingenuity of the American people," Bush said. "Because of your hard work and dedication, I am confident that we will weather this rough period and emerge stronger than ever."

Consumer confidence, a vital part of the economy's health, has hit record lows. And in the public's mind, the president's handling of the economy has taken a serious blow, too.

In Bush's final year in office, families have been hit from all sides _ soaring gas prices, crumbling mortgages, rising grocery bills, struggles to afford college loans.

The president is counting on a short-term economic boost to help. In a deal he reached with Congress back in February, tax rebate checks of up to $600 for individuals and $1,200 for couples are on their way to more than 130 million households.

"This package will help American families increase their purchasing power and help offset the high prices that we're seeing at the gas pump and the grocery store," Bush said.

The true effect of those rebates remains a hotly debated question in economic circles.

Indiana Rep. Andre Carson said more is needed.

"While these recovery rebate checks are a significant first step, we know we must do more to help workers who have lost their jobs and families who are at risk of losing their homes," Carson said Saturday in the Democrats' weekly radio address. "Democrats are also fighting for a second economic stimulus package and are working hard to enact comprehensive housing legislation that will help more Americans avoid foreclosure and hold on to the American Dream."

Carson also noted last Thursday's anniversary of Bush declaring "mission accomplished" in Iraq.

"If we took even a fraction of the billions of dollars we spend in Iraq and used them here at home, we could make real progress and help get our nation out of our economic slump," the Democrat said.

Bush used the bulk of his weekly radio platform to pressure Congress, once again, into approving legislation he says would help the sluggish economy rebound even more.

Among his agenda for lawmakers: make permanent his first-term tax cuts, which are due to expire in 2010; allow drilling for oil in northern Alaska and encourage more oil refining capacity; and modernize the Federal Housing Administration to allow some additional homeowners to refinance from subprime loans into government-backed mortgages.

The president has made such arguments for weeks, to no avail on Capitol Hill.

Bush taped the radio address in Washington on Friday before delivering an economic speech outside of St. Louis and then heading to his Texas ranch for the weekend.

I repeat.

Iraq Recession. Iraq Recession. Iraq Recession.

Imagine is three trillion dollars had instead been spent rebuilding American infrastructure. Men and women working on American projects, spending money, buying houses driving the economy.

Now that money is gone. And more will follow.

I have never, ever seen or read of anything like this POS.

Eight years later, I honestly still dont know if he's an intentionally malignantly liar or just a bumbling moron, and that is what makes him so dangerous.

He spent months denying the economy was in trouble, then he denied the slow down, then he begged the Saudis for more oil because oil solves all of the problems all of the time, then he comes up with some flimsy tax rebate and now he claims he's always been clear as mud about the whole thing.

Worst. Human. Ever.

Yep as clear and candid as, "We have solid evidence and irrefutable proof of Iraq's wmds". As clear and candid as "this war will cost less than 70 billion". As clear and candid as "this war will be a cakewalk". As clear and candid as "the Iraqis will strew flowers in our path". As clear and candid as "Iraqi oil will pay for the war". As clear and candid as "Mission Accomplished, all major battles are over". As clear and candid as "the economy is doing great", even as we he flushes us down the toilet. I find it hard to find anything this administration has done successfully except getting us into an unnecessary war, bailing out a corporation that has left the public taxpayer holding the bag. Selling us the idea that because they wear a flag in their lapel and constantly talk about "our brave troops", (Though many of those lapel flag wearers never served in their generation's war) they are the true patriots. Yet when you check their voting records or measures they support or oppose most of them oppose better health care for those same soldiers or a better GI Bill. They are in a word sickening.

An interesting statistic:

it has been estimated that the total long term cost of Bush's war in Iraq, if we get out soon, will be about $3,000,000,000,000.00. That is 3 trillion dollars. If we had just said to Bush before he started us wandering in the desert, "Let's not, and say we did," the total saving to each and every American would be about $9,000.

$9,000.00 in increased debt for every man, woman and child in America. According to the Republicans, that hasn't had any effect on the economy. Maybe it's easy to say something like that when they found it so easy to lie to us about WMDs.

"We have been clear and candid right from the start. Whatever the problem is, whatever you are afraid of, all we need to do to fix it and to make it easier for you to sleep at night, is reduce taxes for the rich folk. Any questions?"

Bush wouldn't know "clear and candid" if it bit him on the ass.

The simple truth is that had Bush been "clear and candid" about the economy from the start, things would never have gotten as bad as they are now. He's lied about everything from day one and this statement is just another in a long series of lies that got us to where we are today.

America is exhausted waiting for this moron's reign to end. We are holding our collective breath until January 09, when we can finally get someone who is coherent and competent to represent us.

And no, that person will not be Mr. McCane

You are joking, right? Please, tell me which of the "media chosen" candidates is coherent and competent with their double speak?

*Note: "media chosen" excludes Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich - now that would be an awesome ticket, but those 2 people would not bode well for the only industry we have going these days, the military INDUSTRIAL complex, which by the way, controls our media - so Ron and Dennis are not allowed to play.

bush cheney rice powell rumsfield feith wolfie addington libby rove clinton pelosi reid yoo and the list goes on and on and on..........of people that should be on their way to the Hague to face charges of crimes against humanity and international war crimes. Okay, I'm dreaming.

*NEWS FLASH** We are a one party system that represents 4% of the population. End. of. Story.
