CRAWFORD, Texas — President Bush, defending his record and his rhetoric, said Saturday that his administration has been "clear and candid" about the nation's economy.

"We saw the economic slowdown coming, we were up front about these concerns with the American people, and we've been taking decisive action," Bush said in his weekly radio address.

The president's comments appeared at least partly in response to a drumbeat of criticism from Democratic leaders, who say his view of the economy is rosy and unrealistic.

Bush sounded an upbeat tone following a modest uptick of economic news this week.

The economy grew in the first quarter of the year, but only by a meager 0.6 percent. Yet it was not the contraction that some analysts feared. Employers slashed fewer jobs in April than they had in earlier months. The unemployment rate in April also fell slightly.

"No temporary setbacks can hold back the most powerful force in our economy _ the ingenuity of the American people," Bush said. "Because of your hard work and dedication, I am confident that we will weather this rough period and emerge stronger than ever."

Consumer confidence, a vital part of the economy's health, has hit record lows. And in the public's mind, the president's handling of the economy has taken a serious blow, too.

In Bush's final year in office, families have been hit from all sides _ soaring gas prices, crumbling mortgages, rising grocery bills, struggles to afford college loans.

The president is counting on a short-term economic boost to help. In a deal he reached with Congress back in February, tax rebate checks of up to $600 for individuals and $1,200 for couples are on their way to more than 130 million households.

"This package will help American families increase their purchasing power and help offset the high prices that we're seeing at the gas pump and the grocery store," Bush said.

The true effect of those rebates remains a hotly debated question in economic circles.

Indiana Rep. Andre Carson said more is needed.

"While these recovery rebate checks are a significant first step, we know we must do more to help workers who have lost their jobs and families who are at risk of losing their homes," Carson said Saturday in the Democrats' weekly radio address. "Democrats are also fighting for a second economic stimulus package and are working hard to enact comprehensive housing legislation that will help more Americans avoid foreclosure and hold on to the American Dream."

Carson also noted last Thursday's anniversary of Bush declaring "mission accomplished" in Iraq.

"If we took even a fraction of the billions of dollars we spend in Iraq and used them here at home, we could make real progress and help get our nation out of our economic slump," the Democrat said.

Bush used the bulk of his weekly radio platform to pressure Congress, once again, into approving legislation he says would help the sluggish economy rebound even more.

Among his agenda for lawmakers: make permanent his first-term tax cuts, which are due to expire in 2010; allow drilling for oil in northern Alaska and encourage more oil refining capacity; and modernize the Federal Housing Administration to allow some additional homeowners to refinance from subprime loans into government-backed mortgages.

The president has made such arguments for weeks, to no avail on Capitol Hill.

Bush taped the radio address in Washington on Friday before delivering an economic speech outside of St. Louis and then heading to his Texas ranch for the weekend.

Bush: "We've been clear and candid on the economy. By that, I mean we've been candid and clear. Clear, like a window, you know, and candid, like you know, that great philosopher, Candide."

"If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, THE TRUTH IS THE GREATEST ENEMY OF THE STATE." -- Joseph Goebbels, German Minister of Propaganda, 1933-1945

This man is morally bankrupt with an IQ of 91. What kind of judges and administration could he, would he possibly appoint? The judges will be with us for their lifetime!

The supreme court is now a fascist court. If we are a nation of laws, we are surely a nation of corrupt laws now and far into the future.

Don't be surprised one day when you start seeing corporate logos sewn onto the robes of these supreme court judges. They will start to resemble the race cars at the Indy 500!

Clear and candid. Spin and spun. Until recently all we kept hearing from him, in his arrogant and sarcastic tone is, "The economy's strong!" There must be hundreds of sound bytes out there, of him saying this.

Last week Dubya finally admitted we're in a "slow down", but not a recession. Dubya prefers "slow down" because it's easier to pronounce two one-syllable words, than it is to pronounce "recession".

Now that his flimsy balloon has burst, w, the worst president in US history, is seeking refuge in blaming others,(congress has to pass a bill,) and declares that he's been clear and candid about his "trickle down," chronie enriching, middle class killing, stagflation producing economic fiasco.

This is pure rovian doublespeak...Like w's been clear and candid about anything...he and cheesy, who shot his friend in the face, lead the most self absorbed, out of touch, paranoid administration since Nixon drank himself through his Watergate hell into oblivian.

Hey, "clear and candid" w, Let's see those thousands of WH e-mails you deleted or your daddy's Iran-contra papers!.

Unemployment has been going down because people who have given up looking for a job in this piss poor economy aren't counted in the statistics. These people are no longer counted as members of the labor force.

The unemployed have to be actively looking for work in the survey period to be counted as unemployed.

Why not give every American $ 100,000.00 and shut down welfare!!!!!!! The Federal Government and State Governemnts would save millions. Have American open a bank account andthe bank can make the deposit. Welfare ended!!!!!
Economy stimulated and welafre ended. 100's of thousands of welfare employee would need a job but that ok they need to experience of competitive working conditions.

You'd be amazed to know that many do, every day. Small numbers, but they do, day after day, for different causes, with equal passions, and that's not counting the foreign representatives with various issues (Koreans, Peruvians, Congolese, Buddhists -- amazing that they think THIS admin will help them!).
As Jesse Ventura said in his new book "Don't start the revolution without me", the title of his book.

This guy is a real schmoe. i don't know why he got into office, especially the second time after he'd already had us in Iraq for a couple of years. Oh, that's right, we picked an inept moron to run against him who was a horrible public speaker. Wake up, Bush, we are suffering down here in the real world. Not everybody has millions of dollars, or even hundreds, let alone thousands, crazy as that sounds. Moeny doesn't go as far as it used to when every day essential items are ridiculously expensive, not to mention the incredible price gauge in gas that we have to pay to support the oil companies' profit margins just to get the places we need to go to get those every day essentials. The economy is out of control at this rate and the hardest hit are the average citizens that this idiot swore an oath to protect from this kind of suffering, and whom mocks us when he gets questioned about it. Whatever, dude, you'll get your in the end, you just watch. Karma, dud, it's gonna getchya!
