CRAWFORD, Texas — President Bush, defending his record and his rhetoric, said Saturday that his administration has been "clear and candid" about the nation's economy.

"We saw the economic slowdown coming, we were up front about these concerns with the American people, and we've been taking decisive action," Bush said in his weekly radio address.

The president's comments appeared at least partly in response to a drumbeat of criticism from Democratic leaders, who say his view of the economy is rosy and unrealistic.

Bush sounded an upbeat tone following a modest uptick of economic news this week.

The economy grew in the first quarter of the year, but only by a meager 0.6 percent. Yet it was not the contraction that some analysts feared. Employers slashed fewer jobs in April than they had in earlier months. The unemployment rate in April also fell slightly.

"No temporary setbacks can hold back the most powerful force in our economy _ the ingenuity of the American people," Bush said. "Because of your hard work and dedication, I am confident that we will weather this rough period and emerge stronger than ever."

Consumer confidence, a vital part of the economy's health, has hit record lows. And in the public's mind, the president's handling of the economy has taken a serious blow, too.

In Bush's final year in office, families have been hit from all sides _ soaring gas prices, crumbling mortgages, rising grocery bills, struggles to afford college loans.

Story continues below

The president is counting on a short-term economic boost to help. In a deal he reached with Congress back in February, tax rebate checks of up to $600 for individuals and $1,200 for couples are on their way to more than 130 million households.

"This package will help American families increase their purchasing power and help offset the high prices that we're seeing at the gas pump and the grocery store," Bush said.

The true effect of those rebates remains a hotly debated question in economic circles.

Indiana Rep. Andre Carson said more is needed.

"While these recovery rebate checks are a significant first step, we know we must do more to help workers who have lost their jobs and families who are at risk of losing their homes," Carson said Saturday in the Democrats' weekly radio address. "Democrats are also fighting for a second economic stimulus package and are working hard to enact comprehensive housing legislation that will help more Americans avoid foreclosure and hold on to the American Dream."

Carson also noted last Thursday's anniversary of Bush declaring "mission accomplished" in Iraq.

"If we took even a fraction of the billions of dollars we spend in Iraq and used them here at home, we could make real progress and help get our nation out of our economic slump," the Democrat said.

Bush used the bulk of his weekly radio platform to pressure Congress, once again, into approving legislation he says would help the sluggish economy rebound even more.

Among his agenda for lawmakers: make permanent his first-term tax cuts, which are due to expire in 2010; allow drilling for oil in northern Alaska and encourage more oil refining capacity; and modernize the Federal Housing Administration to allow some additional homeowners to refinance from subprime loans into government-backed mortgages.

The president has made such arguments for weeks, to no avail on Capitol Hill.

Bush taped the radio address in Washington on Friday before delivering an economic speech outside of St. Louis and then heading to his Texas ranch for the weekend.

Hey, Queen Pelosi promised no "earmarks" in the 2006 campaign, and yet the Dems inserted 9,000 earmarks into the most recent federal budget.

I'm sure that the libs are in great angst abut this dirty trick, but I have yet to see such anguish in print.

Maybe tomorrow. I'm sure.

Dubya, how about you come face to face with the people who are suffering from your disastrous economic plan and tell them how things are much better than the media is making it out to be, all while they dig through trash cans loking for scraps to feed their children, while they have put their car up for sale because they can't afford the gasoline to run it, while their young child who has pneumonia suffers because they can't afford insurance, but are not "poor" enough to qualify for free hospitalization.

And while you are at it, Dubya, how about getting of your skinny a** and tell the wonderful citizens who voted you in, not once, but twice, what a great President you have been for this country. How you will go down in the history books.

And then you can get your skinny a** back to the Oval office and see if there is ANYTHING you can do during your remaining days as Prez to begin to rectify all the damange that you have done to this country.

Will all this detract from his bicycle time? I think not.

Bush has been hugely evasive on the reality of the economy. I'm sure he's merely trying to save face, which most presidents in his situation would do, but to go out of his way to say he's been "clear and candid" sounds incredibly disingenuous to me.

Bush is a lying sack of you-know-what.

They have so gamed the numbers to, technically, make it appear as though there is no recession, when we are diving deeply into a recession. We will be lucky if we do not end up in a world wide depression, and likely will if they nuke Iran.

Who trusts this guy and his cronies? No one.

Who trusts this Guy?
The bankers
The Military Brass
The war contractors
The New World Order
The Big Corporations
The corporate owned media
And though they are the minority
They rule
And that's what counts
So why would we the people vote for any of the 3 candidates chosen by them?
Answer
We are either stupid or under mind control or both

Economies run in cycles and it was time for this one to be cleaned out

Bush: "We've been clear and candid; we are the anti-Robin Hoods of Washington D.C. forest. Steal from the poor to give to the rich. We told you so, so it is your fault you voted for us again. Please vote for McRich so we can continue to screw you. It's nothing personal. A couple of a hundred million dollars just isn't enough for me. Cheers"

Georgie doesn't know the definitions of clear and candid. He sure as hell is neither. He is an embarassment to the USA and the rest of the world. He's too stupid to be embarassed himself.

It is good that this country has a secret ballot. That way people can't be held accountable for who they voted for in 2000 and 2004. Either we have had two of the most fraudulent elections in world history, or this website harbors a bunch of liars. I challenge anyone who voted for Bush to step up to the plate and explain why. Why? Why? Why, when the evidence was out there, so plain, right in their faces. Why? These past two elections were no-brainers. So what happened? And are we going to let it happen again in 2008? Will there again be millions of confused Kansans voting for another McBush? Listen people; we have to stop and think. We must not look at this important election as another popularity contest like the last two. This election must not be about who's the more likable fellow, Obama or McCain. It must be about who's got the better plan. Most of us may not know exactly where Obama is headed, but we have a pretty good idea. And we know exactly where McCain is headed, because eight years of George Bush has shown us that. Let us all strive to make the right decisions this time, OK?

Possibly because President Bush was a much more viable candidate than was al "green $1.9 billion dollar" scam gore in 2000 and John "heinz" Kerry in 2004.

Just a thought.

Raw915--I often think the same thing. If so many people can see the prez's flaws now why weren't they able to see them in 2000/04. I'm sure many who comment so strongly against him were overjoyed when voting for him.

Bush is trying to help McCain and the republicans. Trying to win the white house and congress with a bad economy is a tall order. So Bush does what he did in college as a cheerleader. He raises a cheer. Besides, his economy is fine. Ranch, $400k a year for life, investments, rich family and oh so many board he can sit on and give speeches till the cows come home.
