CRAWFORD, Texas — President Bush, defending his record and his rhetoric, said Saturday that his administration has been "clear and candid" about the nation's economy.

"We saw the economic slowdown coming, we were up front about these concerns with the American people, and we've been taking decisive action," Bush said in his weekly radio address.

The president's comments appeared at least partly in response to a drumbeat of criticism from Democratic leaders, who say his view of the economy is rosy and unrealistic.

Bush sounded an upbeat tone following a modest uptick of economic news this week.

The economy grew in the first quarter of the year, but only by a meager 0.6 percent. Yet it was not the contraction that some analysts feared. Employers slashed fewer jobs in April than they had in earlier months. The unemployment rate in April also fell slightly.

"No temporary setbacks can hold back the most powerful force in our economy _ the ingenuity of the American people," Bush said. "Because of your hard work and dedication, I am confident that we will weather this rough period and emerge stronger than ever."

Consumer confidence, a vital part of the economy's health, has hit record lows. And in the public's mind, the president's handling of the economy has taken a serious blow, too.

In Bush's final year in office, families have been hit from all sides _ soaring gas prices, crumbling mortgages, rising grocery bills, struggles to afford college loans.

Story continues below

The president is counting on a short-term economic boost to help. In a deal he reached with Congress back in February, tax rebate checks of up to $600 for individuals and $1,200 for couples are on their way to more than 130 million households.

"This package will help American families increase their purchasing power and help offset the high prices that we're seeing at the gas pump and the grocery store," Bush said.

The true effect of those rebates remains a hotly debated question in economic circles.

Indiana Rep. Andre Carson said more is needed.

"While these recovery rebate checks are a significant first step, we know we must do more to help workers who have lost their jobs and families who are at risk of losing their homes," Carson said Saturday in the Democrats' weekly radio address. "Democrats are also fighting for a second economic stimulus package and are working hard to enact comprehensive housing legislation that will help more Americans avoid foreclosure and hold on to the American Dream."

Carson also noted last Thursday's anniversary of Bush declaring "mission accomplished" in Iraq.

"If we took even a fraction of the billions of dollars we spend in Iraq and used them here at home, we could make real progress and help get our nation out of our economic slump," the Democrat said.

Bush used the bulk of his weekly radio platform to pressure Congress, once again, into approving legislation he says would help the sluggish economy rebound even more.

Among his agenda for lawmakers: make permanent his first-term tax cuts, which are due to expire in 2010; allow drilling for oil in northern Alaska and encourage more oil refining capacity; and modernize the Federal Housing Administration to allow some additional homeowners to refinance from subprime loans into government-backed mortgages.

The president has made such arguments for weeks, to no avail on Capitol Hill.

Bush taped the radio address in Washington on Friday before delivering an economic speech outside of St. Louis and then heading to his Texas ranch for the weekend.

I continue to be amazed by the stupidity of this man. In his world of multi millionaires life is good. In our world we struggle to put food on our tables and gas in our car tanks. The man has to be the worst and stupidest president, not only of the USA, but also of any other country in the history of civilization.

Crazy-

You are obviously one of those repugs who thinks all poor people are poor because they're lazy and stupid.

Your unspoken assumptions in the above comment-and most of the others I've seen you make in the last several days-show a nasty sense of self entitlement and arrogance.

Why do you have so much time to troll ?
Retired ?
On social security ?

Do us-and yourself a favor-

get a life.

Clear and candid? When was this guy ever clear and candid about anything? Clear and candid is just a shorthand way of his saying: I'm lying as usual...And just whose economy is it he wants to help? The rich are still collecting their mega-million dollar salaries while the rest of us are getting shafted and the guy still wants to make his tax cuts for the rich permanent. Jobs are being lost but his labor statistics bureau continues to fudge and lie. Consumer spending is said to be up, but he doesn't tell you that that's because prices are up so people are spending more for the same things...The only thing I see that's clear is the empty space between his ears.

Now that his flimsy balloon has burst, w, the worst president in US history, is seeking refuge in blaming others,(congress has to pass a bill,) and declares that he's been clear and candid about his "trickle down," chronie enriching, middle class killing, stagflation producing economic balloon.

This is pure rovian doublespeak...Like w's been clear and candid about anything...he and cheesy, who shot his friend in the face, lead the most self absorbed, out of touch, paranoid administration since Nixon drank himself through his Watergate hell into oblivian.

Hey, "clear and candid" w, Let's see those thousands of WH e-mails you deleted or your daddy's Iran-contra papers!

Professional lawmakers in Washington are insulated from real-world pressures by six-figure salaries, security sentries and servile staffers.we have outsourced our govt to the zionist fraudsters..

Last month, the newspaper penned a front-page dispatch headlined “Housing Accord Puts Builders First; Strapped Homeowners Offered Little Aid.” It described congressional leaders agreeing to “provide billions of dollars in tax rebates to the slumping home-building industry while offering little to homeowners threatened with foreclosure.” The bill proposes $6 billion in corporate tax cuts, while “families who cannot afford to repay their home loans—the group at the heart of the mortgage meltdown”—would get less than 2 percent of that for “counseling services.”

Next to this story was a report labeled “Sweeping Bills Passed to Help Homeowners.” It told of Maryland state lawmakers “toughening oversight of the mortgage-lending industry and establishing pre-emptive measures to help people at risk of foreclosure.”

The clowns of economy: Bush and Cheney.

The only difference: whereas Bush and Cheney think and act like clowns, Bush looks like one. I know because I use to frequent the Barnum and Bailey Circus when I was a kid.

On a related note - has anyone noticed the MSM's take on the latest economic figures? Only in a Bushworld presidency is the loss of "only" 20,000 jobs considered "good news".

And if you study their methodology for determining inflation and unemployment, you arrive at the obvious conclusion that the numbers are pure fantasy.

Why do I have the nagging feeling that when the new president takes office in January (unless this one declares Marshall Law) that we are going to find that the books have been cooked by a greater degree than we already believe?

The notion that pouring tax giveaways into the pockets of big corporations and the super rich stimulates the economy is a fallacy. Corporations don’t create new jobs just because they are flush with new capital, they create new jobs to meet greater demand for their products. The rich don’t necessarily buy more consumer products than the rest of us.
Wealth does not trickle down, it percolates up.
The only way to really stimulate the economy is to use tax revenue from the wealthy and corporations to invest in infrastructure development to employ people in construction and social services who will use that money to spend on goods and services to create demand and stimulate the economy from the bottom up. This is basic Keynesian economics, an historically proven formula to keep a capitalist economy functioning. The Reagan era disrupted that proven method leading to the instability we have today.

Too little, too late. To have any success at all, this wacky rebate scam has to depend on people who will spend, spend, spend:

You've hit it exactly on the head!
Why is this most simple economic logic so difficult for Politicians, Corporate leaders, and the Wealthy to understand?

If the government is basically giving back tax money to a population drowning under the highest per capita debt burden on earth, it would seem the most sensible suggestion would be to exhort this population to either save the money for unforeseen future expenses or pay down any current debts.

But, like everything else in this Bush presidency, they tell you to do the opposite of what makes sense.

In any event, $600 isn't going to go very far the rest of the year. It'll be gone in no time and we'll be back to square one. Just a continuation of the Reagan years voodoonomics.
