The San Francisco Chronicle reprints this photo taken at an anti-immigration rally in Texas. The paper quips: "Excellent point: In Houston, a Texan protesting amnesty for illegal immigrants argues that anyone who can't master English doesn't deserve to live in America."

Everyone I've ever met from Texas lets you know "I'm from Texax"....as if that is some sort of great fact! Ha ha ha!!! I think most Texans are dumb and wouldn't tell anyone I was from there, even if I were! George Bush is indeed a Texan, even though he was from Conn. He is as stupid as they come.....like most Texans. They're a disgrace to the American race.

It is sad accident being born in Texas and for your love ones sake you must move out pronto from that place. The heat will melt your brain and then you end up talking with a funny drawl and incapable of listening to reason. So bad is that place for the brain I'll give you an example of what could happen to your brain. It's ridiculous to say that Texans are a disgrace to the American race. First, there is no such thing as an American race.

Secondly, ever hear of of Ann Richards? Barbara Jordan? Lady Bird Johnson? Molly Ivins? Bill Moyers?

We have liberals here, too and we don't need to be discounted along with the rest of the right-wingers who live here. We have ideas and energy (no pun intended) to offer the rest of the country if people would just realize that we liberals exist!

I grew up in Texas (never heard anyone say 'Texax'...wtf?), lived on the East Coast for 13 years and am back in my beloved Austin. We are not here because we are republican. We came back so our son can know his family and so we can readily enjoy a fine plate of migas on a Sunday morning while listening to punk/folk/gospel music at the local taqueria.

We are not all idiots and fools. We are not disgraces like the woman in the photo. I don't know anyone who speaks with a drawl. My closest friends are Malaysians from Berkeley and transplanted Brooklynites who couldn't be happier here.

I think your post just exposes how limited your scope of thinking is. Give us Texas Liberals a chance to be heard.

How about no one is allowed to send us any of their poor. Adding poor people to a country doesn't make it richer. It's makes it poorer. Every poor person that comes here means that eventually the rest of their extended family gets to come too. It's called chain migration and its gotta stop. I don't know how many indian immigrants live in my town and bring over every relative they can. They also purposely bring over as many senior citizen relatives as they can so they can all get social security to add to the household income.

The sign in the photo doesn't differentiate between illegal or legal immigrant. Hell, it doesn't even mention immigrants. The humor lies in the simple irony that someone who is advocating an "official" language lacks even a simple grasp of spelling in said language. Chuckle and move on.

And Spain didn't come here for land, they were looking for gold and the fountain of youth.
When they couldn't find gold they settled in Mexico and stole all their silver.
You might say that Mexico has gotten raped several times over.

And just because someone has a Spanish surname does not mean they are "illegal."
It could mean that their family has been living in the southwest since the 1500's, before Jamestown.
