The San Francisco Chronicle reprints this photo taken at an anti-immigration rally in Texas. The paper quips: "Excellent point: In Houston, a Texan protesting amnesty for illegal immigrants argues that anyone who can't master English doesn't deserve to live in America."

See the full-size photo below:

I wonder if the woman above knows this (now-famous) guy:

It was good of her to highlight the word with 2 underscores too.

Love the busy shirt as well.

Of course, English should be our national language. But no one said it was easy to spell.

Wonder if the woman is a teacher.

I work in the educational system (not an educator). And you would be amazed at what I have seen. One elementary teacher wrote a list of words on the blackboard for the students to learn that week. More than half of the words were misspelled.

The guy looks like - well, like he slipped through the NCLB cracks. Or perhaps he is the poster child for NCLB.

maybe when we start treating our teachers
with respect and dignity and acknowledge their value to society
they might step up their game

Good point. Since they can't be fired, maybe if we pay them more money they'll do their jobs.

Hard to step up the game when the game is fixed - no child left behind only lets them teach to the test - and most School Principals, management etc, are more afraid of getting sued by parents than in teaching anything...the message is don't make waves, pass them on and let them be someone else's problem.

I agree we need to treat Teachers better but we have to LET them do their jobs and that means giving them back their authority over students. I'm very close to someone who has been teaching for more than 25 years and what passes for education these days is Pathetic!!

When I studied abroad my junior year I met two teachers from Texas. They were traveling on a Eurail pass, just as I was. They asked where I had spent the semester, and I said London. One of them asked, "Is that in France?"

GOODGOLLYUSERIGHT....Instead of going to Ireland, how about getting a degree in education and teaching the children of people who think even a high school education is overkill.

OTOH, if you can afford a trip to Ireland, maybe you're overpaid.

You know, if you can't even properly spell basic words in the English language... you probably shouldn't be educating others on the language and grammar you think they should be using!

This explains why Obama's labeled an "elitist" because the majority of his supporters actually know how to spell and speak proper English, unlike the redneck yahoos holding these signs in the heartland of white bigotry, Texas, home of guns, homophobes, anti-evolutionary flat-Earth deniers, Death Row corpses, slaughterhouses galore and hunting fanatics. Where is Leatherface when we need him? These people are a sad reflection of our culture that supported the sadistic imposter who's illegally held the Oval Office for the past 7 years against the Constitutional imperative & Electoral College. Perhaps if we elect someone like Obama, attracting college-educated citizens who can speak proper English grammar articulately and spell correctly, we'll prove to the world for a change that we truly can leave no child behind.

whoa now!! Don't disparage Texas. We may tote guns, hate gays and hunt fanatically, but George Bush is from Connecticut.

To call humans "humanoids" is really demeaning.
