The San Francisco Chronicle reprints this photo taken at an anti-immigration rally in Texas. The paper quips: "Excellent point: In Houston, a Texan protesting amnesty for illegal immigrants argues that anyone who can't master English doesn't deserve to live in America."

Reminds me of a story someone told me about the naivite (or stoopidity, take yer pick) of some college kids who asked the Hawaiian student I knew "what the exchange rate was between Hawaii and the US." Why is it considered "bigotry" to want control of our borders? Are Europeans, etc. bigots because they control their borders and only let those in with the paperwork showing them to legal visitors or immigrants?

The word "bigot" is used to describe anyone against illegal immigration and it is unfortunate because it is just not true. There are many Latinos here legally who opposed illegal immigration.

Saint Francis, The Angels, Red, King's Road (rough guesses!). It looks and sounds so much better in Spanish. Take New Mexico's Sangre de Christo Mountains as an example.

A big job, all that translation, to change all official proper names to English. That would mean that Tom Tancredo comes from Red, not Colorado. And Nevada would become Snow Fall. Texas (Indian word) would become Friend. Florida would become Flowered. Boca Raton would become Rat's Mouth. Santa Fe would become Holy Faith and Sacramento would become Sacrament. Palos Verdes would become Green Sticks. El Paso would become The Step. Las Vegas would become The Open Plain. Amarillo would become Yellow.

And that's just for starters.

Just look at a map of the US and the states and you‘ll find many Spanish derived words like California, Nevada, Florida, Montana, Texas, Arizona, Orlando, Las Vegas, Boca Raton, Santa Fe, Las Cruces, etc…along with Native American derived words like Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Nebraska, Utah, Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Arkansas, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Michigan, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Seattle, Ocala, Micanopy, Steinhathchee, Alachua, Tallahassee, Opa Locka, Mobile, etc. and words derived from other languages like America, Philadelphia, Louisiana, Baton Rouge, Alaska, etc. I guess the map makers will have to get busy for all of those “Official” English Language maps? And somebody may want to tell the Xenophobes that they don’t actually speak English. The King’s English is not taught in American schools. Just ask anyone from England and they will say we speak American.

You know, I thought hiring illegals DID get you fined. I dated this guy whose parents ran a small biz (electrical) and the mom told me she was so sad to let go an Italian who didn't have the proper papers.

The thing is enforcement, particularly for the big companies that need low paid migrant workers and the like. That's the issue. The agribiz or chicken processors and such love these workers because they can underpay and ignore OSHA and the like. Little companies gotta worry whereas big ones pay someone and it's no skin off their noses.

Thirteen years ago - a student-teacher in charge of the spelling in my child's class gave them a list of words to learn each week. Once, one was "beatles" instead of "beetles" and another time, one was "Morning Dove" instead of "Mourning Dove". My 8 year old daughter caught the first. We had to tell the teacher - she hadn't noticed.
