Barbara Walters, who last week announced that she had an affair with Senator Edward Brooke in the 1970s (the announcement will air on Oprah tomorrow) and whose book, Audition, is published this week, has given several interviews lately to hype her book.

In an interview with the New York Times' Bill Carter, she explained what distinguished her from Katie Couric: she had a largely terrible experience at the "Today" show:

Among the worst was the high-handed disrespect of Frank McGee, the anchor of "Today" when she was emerging as a well-regarded reporter on a program that had previously designated its female contributors Today Girls. Mr. McGee went to NBC management and demanded that she not be allowed to ask any questions of serious newsmakers but be relegated to the "girlie interviews."

"I always had this policy: work hard, don't whine," Ms. Walters said. "This was one of the few times I had the gumption to say: After what I've done, you can't do this to me."

Begrudgingly NBC agreed to allow Ms. Walters to ask the fourth question after Mr. McGee had had the first three.

That restriction led her to do interviews outside the "Today" set, and she went to China with President Richard M. Nixon in 1972. (Mr. McGee's comment: "China's not far enough.") Later she memorably moved herself center stage during the Mideast peace talks between Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin, "the most interesting time of my career," she said.

By then she was at ABC News after a bitter parting from "Today." She said, "Unlike Katie, there were no going-away parties for me," connecting her departure to become the first woman on an evening newscast to the current situation of CBS's Katie Couric.

The Carter interview also reveals that Barbara Walters and Edward Brooke have corresponded about her announcement of their affair, and that he sent her a "very nice note."

In an interview with the AP, Barbara explained her complicated relationships with both her sister and her former co-host, Rosie O'Donnell:

Her display of equanimity includes Rosie O'Donnell, a panelist last season on Walters' weekday ABC chat show, "The View," who routinely picked fights with her fellow panelists and the world beyond.

"We had our ups and downs," Walters said, "but I have enormous affection for Rosie, and I think she's a great talent."
...

Growing up, she found her insecurity was made all the worse by her older sister, Jackie, who was mentally disabled. In that less enlightened era, Jackie's condition had a spillover effect on Barbara, stigmatizing both of them in the eyes of other kids.

"It was a lonely, isolated childhood," Walters said.

The complicated feelings that churned long after her sister's death in 1985 inspired "Audition."

Brooke was a grown man when he slept around with Barbara for 2 years and he is a grown man now. She had every right to tell the facts of HER life and she had the right to get paid to do it. Sounds like a case of being jealous to me...it is not our fault, haters, that your life story is not worth paying for.

I have been a fan of Barbara Walters for years and some people posting here are showing that they are age discriminatory. You too shall age!
Until we hold people accountable for their actions and recognize that each person has the right to tell their own story liars and thieves will prosper. If Senator Brooke didn't want to be exposed he shouldn't have done the deed.
Time women and men who have cheated be held accountable to the spouses they lied to for so many years. So many people in positions to make and enforce the laws are liars and cheats.
How can we raise honest non bullying children with the examples being set?

Barbara seems to be a narcissist who desperately craves acclaim in every moment. It must be exhausting. Let's pray for her.

and old confused lady. When she was younger , she was a young confused lady. She is now one sorry lady. Some people just can't quit when they are ahead. If she needed the money I could understand her better, but she has so much money she doesn't know what to do with it. I think she has an adopted daughter, but there was never a great love between them, and you just can't revive love. It's either there or it isn't .

Oh, here you are again dora, spouting off your invectives. Your wisdom always astounds me. Where have you learned such insights?

FYI Barbara Walters: Stop trying to move people away from your love for Black Men. You had this lust for years now you are trying to be Miss Clean N Cut. No, no, no...you are a freak lady and have been for years. Even your broken voice can't fool anyone anymore, I wonder who turned you out? Carl Weathers? Nipsy Russell or Leon.

She "loves" Rosie. BUT WHAT ABOUT BUILDING SEVEN? Every time Rosie tried to bring up anomalies in the official 911 story, Barbara would just clam up tight. If Rosie was full of BS, believe me, Walters would have been all over her in a NY minute. Sure, who wants to be the new Kitty Kilgallen? (A TV host who was going to "break open" the JFK assassination, but was soon murdered). PS- Whoopie thinks a hot topic is TOM CRUISE.

She wrote the book, then told him that it was going to be published. That's throwing him under the bus.

And did she get the ex-wife's permission or let her know? Oops, never thought of that, I bet!

Anybody, male or female, who writes this kind of crap to sell books is pretty smarmy.

Calling Babs on it is not misogynist, any more than it would be to call Brooke on it if he wrote about it to make money.

who says the home wasn't wrecked b4 barbara came around? a lot of women who are so hurt by this betrayal usually let things slide so far because they think that no matter how bad things are, their husbands will remain faithful.

Yea, Yea, it's always the wife's fault. She wasn't "servicing her husband" properly, eh?

Talk about a selfish, self-serving woman - I had "challenged" siblings (yes, more than one) and I learned compassion, pride in their personal accomplishments, etc.

Barbara Walters has a disabled sister named Rosie?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:28 PM on 05/05/2008

Had. She died of ovarian cancer.

On that note, get your daughter vaccinated asap!

The person who wrote that headline tried to cram in everything, and they accidentally made it look like her name was Rosie. Oh, HuffPo. Sigh.

How considerate of her to send the old man a note! "Eddie, just want to let you know I'm hoping my new memoir sells big so I'm going to let the cat out of the bag about that thing we had going 30 years ago. Hope you don't mind! xo Babs" If you want to weigh in on her little affair and her decision to reveal it, vote in this poll at Such a Cheater:

Barbara Walters has worked hard all her life - she was an early role model to girls and young women yearning to break free of the go to college, find a husband, retire to the suburbs, and raise kids mentality.

Homewrecker? It still takes two to tango and I'd be real careful I didn't live in a glass house before I started throwing THOSE stones.

Homewrecker?
Yes homewrecker. Have you ever heard the phrase leave him alone he's a family man. Not Miss Walters, she wanted to be a pioneer of sleeping with the first Black Senator since reconstruction. Miss Walters is a slefish, classless, tasteless woman.I thought she had more self respect than to reveal certain aspects of her priavte life. Guess who was wrong.

"leave him alone he's a family man".....then he should NOT have been in the position with her to have to say that. Blame is a two-way street.

Blame is a two-way street

I blame her because she chose to write about it, she gets the blame. Whose to say she didn't go after him.she's an aggressive woman who was powerful back then. Since it was known he was married, she as a respectful woman should've rebuffed his advances if he made any.She knows about being in a home with a cheating spouse, didn't she come from one with her father.

You are all full of crap.
Barabara Walters got the Senator's permission before she published and he is happily married now to someone else.
I see that the misogynist rants against Ms. Walters continue on here - but she was a pioneer for women, when womwen couldn't aspire to anything but secretaries or housewives.
I am glad for my neices that someone like Barbara Walters existed.
She could easily have relied on her family reputation to just hang out and be a socialite like the conservative Pat Buckley etc.
She didn't - she went to work...and did damned well for herself.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:34 AM on 05/05/2008

actually, no. She wrote the book, then told him that it was going to be published. That's far different from "getting his permission."

When I was a teenager I read Walters' book about interviewing--How to talk to practically anybody about practically anything. That's where I discovered the art of the open-ended question. Today I watch TV interviewers and they are dreadful! So many fall into two categories: those who only ask questions that can be answered with a "yes" or "no," and those who answer their own question while asking it (Charlie Bigmouth Rose is TV's best example of the latter). Where is the art of conversation? Read that book, if you want to know how to keep an interview fresh and lively, and get your subject to say things they would not tell anyone else.

Maybe Babs should read the book as well. It was actually ghost written by the late Toronto journalist June Callwood, who penned many a celebrity "autobiography" in her day.

I would add that Chris Matthews gives Charlie Bigmouth Rose a run for his money in the "answering the question by asking it" category. Sometimes, Matthew's questions go on so damned long, there is no time left for the interviewee to respond!

Or at least that she'll do anything, including putting her asexual image on the line, for high book sales. Who cares if she had an "exotic" escapade. That's an old story. It's 2008 for cryin out loud! She's not the only one to ever sleep with a married black man ... it's non-story.
