NEW YORK -- CNN's John Roberts declared his interview with Barack Obama on Monday a "Rev. Wright-free zone" to telegraph he wouldn't ask the Democratic presidential contender about the controversy over his former pastor.

The reference was flip, but Roberts primarily talked about Iran, the gas tax and the economy during a six-minute interview with Obama that aired at 6:20 a.m. EDT.

During appearances last week at the National Press Club and elsewhere, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright repeated his beliefs that the U.S. government may have developed the AIDS virus to infect the black community and that the U.S. had invited the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Obama denounced the remarks.

The first 11 questions that NBC's Tim Russert asked Obama on "Meet the Press" on Sunday were about the Wright matter.

Roberts said it was clear that nothing new had been said about the issue for a week, and that many of his viewers believed it was time for CNN to move on.

"Rather than spend one second of time on an issue that isn't really relevant to people because there's been no news on it, I thought I'd spend the time talking to these candidates about issues that really matter to people," he said.

Roberts, co-host of CNN's morning program, interviewed Hillary Clinton an hour after talking to Obama. He didn't ask her about Wright, either.

The veteran anchor said he made the decision on his own, and has since received about 100 e-mails, all overwhelmingly positive, about it.

The declaration of a "Wright-free zone" wasn't done to telegraph to Obama that he was going easy on him, Roberts said. Rather, he was trying to tell viewers it was going to be a substantive interview, he said.

"All of the questions that are currently out there on this have been asked and answered," he said.

It doesn't mean he's closing the book on the issue, Roberts said. If Obama becomes the Democratic nominee and Republicans criticize his relationship to Wright, he'll likely return to it, he said.

Well it would be a bold and radical strategy for the democrats to try to win states that arent traditionally democratic. You know because that strategy has been so successful. Some just want to continue to concentrate on Ohio and Florida. Im sure republicans dont think like that, guess thats why theyve won some big elections. They dont think small. Me, Im all for Deans 50 state strategy, and I think Obama can actually win states democrats dont even try to contest. If you never try, your defeated before you start.

VERY weird news nite.....For the first time....most of the expert cable news pundits are declaring that HILLARY HAS ABSOLUTELY NO CHANCE (even if she wins both Indiana & N. Carolina....last of the big primaries)!!!!!!!!!! Hillary must have really upset Rupert Murdoch. TRUTH AT LAST !!!!!!!....and Dick Morris did such a breakdown of how she can't win (even if she tried to cheat and count Fla. and Mi.) that the Fox girl Megan had to keep interrupting him. Maybe the pundits (and superdelegates) know that this legal case in L.A. against Hill and Bill (GOOGLE: Peter Paul vs. William Clinton)...considered the largest voter fraud/conspiracy case in history...is about to BLOW UP !!!!! The media hasn't discussed it....but Bill could END UP IN JAIL !!!!!

Mr. Roberts, well done. I have been weaning myself from morning television for the past month ( since the Rev, Wright story broke, coincidentally). I must confess that I had been watching Morning Joe for a while up to that point but that show has lost me for good, a lethal cocktail of Rev Wright meets Scarborough. I will give you another look now but you guys have to lighten up a little. It is possible to be serious and entertaining. More conversation and spontaneity, less interview to the nth.

Why did John Roberts have to mention to Senator Obama that the interview would be in a "Reverend Wright free zone?" If that were the case, then he should not have even mentioned the pastor's name and just got on with the interview. Did Roberts think he was inventing some clever turn of phrase--which he wasn't--that would delineate political coverage from here on out. The phrase was gratuitous and entirely silly. Wow, I'm impressed. A member of the blow-dried, teleprompter reading set, that is not going to ram more Rev. Wright down our throats, how refreshing. I wonder if Scarborough and his female version of Alan Colmes will follow suit and stop the non-stop Rev. wright "controversy".

Why in the world is it so crazy that the government is dirty. There are over 50 million people who are disbabled in the richest country in the world. We are nowhere near the largest country, but we have more people in prison than any other country. We have about 50 million people without health insurance.

We are by far the most obese country in the world.http://www.wellingtongrey.net/miscellanea/archive/2007-05-06--world-fatness.html
Maybe because we strip our food of all its nutrition and pour preservatives in it to remain profitable.

We probably have the most uninformed electorate in the world.

I have slowly deleted MSNBC from my DVR. It started with Morning Joe, MSNBC News featuring Mika and her sleazy boyfriend Joe Sscarborough, My next deletion was Race to the White House, and slowly moving onto Hardball, especially in light of this particular comment by Chris Matthews, that Wright Story brings Racism, oh I mean Ratings; I still hold onto Countdown. I skirt around other channels; CNN now in the morning, Larry King seems to be pretty balance and sometimes Anderson Cooper, occasionally the Verdict only if Dan Abrams is not on one of his Propaganda Rampages.

It’s so sad of what a replica of FOX News MSNBC has become.

Cool, now I also have an alternative to Morning Joe. I found Mika refreshing but Joe goes through his PA middle class tirades. I think that guy needs to get out more. Thanks CNN. But does this really balance out the CNN Wright non-stop marathon this past weekend?

Nice job John, I will definitely tune in, as I tuned out Morning Joe a while back and look forward to viewing your show for a vacation from the redundant fake scandal of Rev Wright. The only other show that us worth watching is Olbermann on MSNBC.

Very good Johnl. Time one of the media out let's got down to the issues and not nonsense! This has been beaten to death now. And the more you vocus on it, the more wright acts like a idiot! Time to move on to talking about the houseing problems, gas price's the economy and so much more we want to hear about. I'm glad people e-mailed you john and told you it's a job well done! I just might start watching cnn news again. Gave them all up when they refused to stay off the reverend Wright thing.

An example of why the narcissist who runs this place is really just a "mean girl" whose pretends this is a respected politicial "newspaper" when in reality it's a nasty, misogynistic cesspool.

Look at the post about Misha Barton for example. Another lovely day of the "online newspaper," encouraging people to insult a woman for cellulite.

And don't forget! Make sure you go out and buy Aria__a's new book damn it!

How did that get past the cesures here! This place is different than the "biased" MSM! This is an online "newspaper" with serious political reporting! And the people who write here are so impressive! Lots of celebrities!

mission accomplished - wright was again brought to the publics attention, this time in a "no wright" interview.

Before we bestow sainthood on Mr. Roberts, let's agree with Amanda that if he REALLY wanted to skip the subject, he wouldn't have mentioned the rev at all. How refreshing would that have been?
