McCain: We Need A "League Of Nations" To Counter Iran

John McCain channeled his inner Woodrow Wilson yesterday, calling for the formation of a League of Nations. Unlike the 20th century version, however, which sought after lofty goals of mutual disarmament and economic prosperity through global diplomacy, McCain's League of Nations will be used to sanction Iran. Again.

Presumably, he is referencing the idea of a "League of Democracies" that he introduced in March, a concept that produced this response from Fareed Zakaria:

The approach lacks any strategic framework. What would be the gain from so alienating two great powers [Russia and China]? How would the League of Democracies fight terrorism while excluding countries like Jordan, Morocco, Egypt and Singapore? What would be the gain to the average American to lessen our influence with Saudi Arabia, the central banker of oil, in a world in which we are still crucially dependent on that energy source?

He must have, because he went on the graduate 5th from the bottom of his class at the Naval Academy.

Hey McFlipper, just create your own league...you've argued every side of every issue, so you won't even need anyone else to join.

If you don't think that's a good idea, just wait 10 minutes and you'll change your mind.

Wow, I don't see why any one needs to explain it to him since he was alive when both were formed, but we have a "league of nations", it is known as the "United Nations".

He is getting scarier by the day.

As usual, McCain is the man of the century... the 20th Century. Now you can understand why I think his name should be John McCentury McCain.

It was the Republicans that were against the League Of Nations when Woodrow Wilson was trying to get it accepted after WW-I. If he had been successful there might not have been a WW-II. Mmm... maybe McCain is hoping that his suggestion will fail and we'll end up with another war just like the first time.

McCentury McCain, he's just living in the wrong Century

I think his name should be John McCane, as in walking with a ...

Let me get this straight:

Hillary is now more of a warmonger than McCain?

I thought Republicans opposed the League of Nations? I guess it takes 90 years for Cons to come around.

McCain remembers the League of Nations the first time around and the name just tickled him so much that he wants to do it again! How adorable!

"League of Nations" or "League of Democracies" -- whatever.

It still all sounds like something where people wear their underpants on the outside and fight for truth, justice, and the American Way.

(And that's been working well for ya this new century, hasn't it?)

Well at least we got a Republican to acknowledge the need for a League of Nations! Now if they'd only acknowledge the need for a New Deal.

WHAT???? McCAIN DOESN'T SEEM TO HAVE A CLUE WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT!!!

Iran is no Russia, China, or old Germany. Isreal is plenty capable of handling Iran with a little help from the U.S. but John-I-oppose-torture-before-I-supported-it-McCain thinks we need a league of Nations? This is almost laughable, hell, it is!!!

Making Iran looking like the big bad wolf that it ISN'T is just RIDICULOUS.

Let us not forget, the League of Nations is what got things FRACKED UP to start with!

...and we can call it " The He-Man Muslim Haters Club", and we wouldn't let any of those foreigners that talk funny and don't agree with us join our club....I'll ask Cindy if I can build a treehouse out back where we can meet, and have cookies and kool-aid! That would be really neat-o!!

Thanks to the Republicans, we already have one. Us and Israel.............. That's it.

Do we need any more proof that McCain is senile and has serious mental issues? Why would we even consider this guy as a presidential candidate?

He just means war. Bush wants war with Iran. McCain is in bed with Bush. This is a step towards war with Iran. A "justification" for war.

Prediction: War with Iran before the Election. Especially if it is going bad for McCain in the polls.

Hmmm. . . I wonder where they would get the troops from? Oh, I know! A draft!

I've thought about that too but Bush would need Congressional support and the Senate is under Dem majority (I dare not say control... they don't seem to realize that). It would require another 9/11 and an 'oh man! it wasn't Iraq or Afghanistan! It was Iran!' to get people into another war. But there's no way we'll be fooled into another eye-for-an-eye war... at least not for another 50 years.
