I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Gasad

A few days ago, the Obama campaign released an ad defending his opposition to Hillary Clinton's gas tax holiday. The Clinton campaign immediately challenged the sourcing of one the ad's claims. ABC's Jake Tapper reported:

The quote in the ad says of Clinton's gas tax vacation proposal, "experts say it will boost oil industry profits," and it cites the New York Times on April 28, referring to a column by Paul Krugman -- generally a columnist supportive of Senator Clinton's plans.

But the column in question -- and the quote -- have nothing to do with Clinton. They have to do with Sen. John McCain's gas tax holiday proposal -- which Krugman refers to as "a measure that would, in fact, do little to help consumers, although it would boost oil industry profits." ...

Krugman says that the "McCain gas tax plan is a giveaway to oil companies, disguised as a gift to consumers. Is the supply of gasoline really fixed? For this coming summer, it is. Refineries normally run flat out in the summer, the season of peak driving. Any elasticity in the supply comes earlier in the year, when refiners decide how much to put in inventories. The McCain/Clinton gas tax proposal comes too late for that. So it's Econ 101: the tax cut really goes to the oil companies."

And then this key sentence: "The Clinton twist is that she proposes paying for the revenue loss with an excess profits tax on oil companies. In one pocket, out the other. So it's pointless, not evil. But it is pointless, and disappointing."

So he suggests that Clinton's gas tax proposal will give revenues to oil companies then take them away with her "windfall profits."

Now Paul Krugman is speaking out. In a blog entry posted Monday, he writes:

I did not say that the Clinton proposal would increase oil industry profits. If the ad implies that I did, it should be retracted.

The Clinton proposal is financed by an excess profits tax. At worst, it sends money in a circle. In practice, it would probably reduce oil industry profits at least slightly, since the rise in the pre-tax price of gasoline probably wouldn't wipe out all of the tax cut.

I was very clear when I wrote about the Clinton proposal that while I didn't think it was good policy, it was not the same as McCain's, and relatively harmless. If the Obama people are suggesting otherwise, they're being deliberately dishonest.

That said, this whole point may be moot. The current version of the ad already seems to have been changed to remove the reference to Krugman's piece. Watch it:

A few days ago, the Obama campaign released an ad defending his opposition to Hillary Clinton's gas tax holiday. The Clinton campaign immediately challenged the sourcing of one the ad's claims. ABC's ...

Oh, somehow Clintons plan is OK, but McCains is awful? C'mon Krugman... they are basically the same plan and both accomplish nothing.

since Clinton and McCain agree that a gas tax holiday is a good idea, Obama using Krugman's analysis is fair game. Krugman's criticism of McCain's gas tax holiday is tantamount to a criticism of Clinton's same plan. He just got caught criticizing something that his queen also supports. It is a problem when your candidate is a pathological panderer. Obama should not and will not retract anything.

Krugman has no more credibility. McCain and Clinton's gas tax holiday proposal are basically the same. The difference..the politicians names.

Geez, Krugman, have you no dignity? You can't even admit that Hillary's plan for the windfall profits tax is nonsense that would take years to get in place? And can't you admit that the oil companies would just raise their prices if the tax was cut, as they have every other time something like this has been attempted? You've really sold out your intellectual honesty and your dignity. Sorry to see them go, Paul.

Does anyone know what Krugman's contempt for Obama is about? I know you can theorize that he has been offered a post in a Clinton White House (the dog house at the moment) and maybe that is so but it seems like it might be something else. I had such respect for that man and now I'm... incredulous. Any scoop out there?

You first Krugman retract all that nonsense you post and try to pass off as informed opinion. I'm sure if Obama searched he can find some LIE that you printed about him.

You have been treating Hillary Clinton with kid gloves for months now. She said yesterday on This Week's Town Hall they she doesn't thrown in her lot with elitist economists in a question specifically about you. Do you think that is appropriate? Isn't that like the Bush administration ignoring scientists. Isn't your claim that the oil companies may be able to recoup only part of what they lose by paying windfall taxes belied by previous attempts to do this manuver? Do you really believe she is not pandering? Will you ever apply the same standards to Clinton's words as you do to Obama's or have you developed an irrational hatred of him that you disguise by holding his words to different standards.? You have repeatedly said "look at what the candidates say as proof of what they will do." So what do you have to say about a Hillary Clinton presidency that would shut out the opinions of economists?

bottom line: the gas tax holiday is idiotic, all economists and experts agree, it's inane.

you are right, but after he saw that it did not do what was intended he did not vote to continue it. Unlike HRC he kearns from his mistakes and has already discussed what you obviously thought was a 'gotcha'. Nice try though...

Yes, and he learned from the experience. You can juggle this tax crap, but the benefit of it will never reach the public. That is what Obama learned from his experience. Unfortunately HRC lacks that experience and she is not willing to learn from someone else. Not a very good endorsement for the so-called "experienced" candidate who wants to be president.

Can someone track the hillary approval rating from states that she has already burned through...I mean voted?

Hillary threw Paul Krugman under the bus on ABC and ran him over few times to finish him off. She called him one of the Bushies and responsible for current debacle.

Yet amazing he continues to shill for her.

Too bad he is not like Jeremiah Wright and turns on Hillary and tries to destroy her.

Frankly the ad should have used the line " It is pointless and disappointing". Then Krugman could have been satisfied and the ad worked just as well.

What was distorted in this story?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:59 AM on 05/06/2008

she's is speaking to Krugman's typical sycophantic pro-Clinton twists. This story just exposes that Krugman was caught going off message, being rational about the gas tax holiday pander.

Krugman: Hillary, please don't leave me out, I need this job! Hook me up, girl! Obama's a big ole sissy, I need that real testicular stuff only you can provide! It's so good to me! Aaaahhhhh, don't leave me behind to be ripped to shreds by the Daily Kos and MoveOn crowd!
