I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Reward

She has ruled it out, but a prompt withdrawal from the contest for the Democratic nomination offers Sen. Hillary Clinton the prospect of major rewards.

One of the most inviting is the near certainty that the Obama campaign would agree to pay back the $11.4 million she has loaned her own bid, along with an estimated $10 million to $15 million in unpaid campaign expenses.

In addition, Democrats, both those who are loyal and those who are opposed to her campaign, say the odds of her winning a top leadership spot in the Senate would improve dramatically if she gracefully conceded now. The icing on the cake includes an improved political climate, giving Hillary and Bill Clinton the opportunity to heal the rift with the black political community.

"If she leaves the stage gracefully, as Gore did in 2000, she will be able to rebuild her political capital within the party fairly quickly, and over time most of her perceived and real sins will be long forgiven and/or forgotten," said Dan Gerstein, a Democratic consultant and Obama supporter.

While Clinton currently has her eye focused on only one thing, the presidential nomination, if she loses -- as appears increasingly likely -- her stature in the Senate will depend, in part, on whether she is ultimately seen as helping or hurting Obama's chances in November.

That stature, in turn, will be crucial in determining her success if she decides to try to climb the Senate leadership ladder. This year, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada faces what could prove to be a tough re-election fight.

Brookings scholar Tom Mann contends that for Clinton to emerge from the contest without severe wounds, one path might be to redirect the main thrust of her presidential bid away from attacks on Obama to a focus on John McCain.

"Clinton's status in the Democratic party will be enhanced if she finds a timely and honorable way to become a strong supporter of an Obama-led ticket in the general election. She can do that by remaining in the race but directing all of her campaign rhetoric against John McCain or by suspending her campaign immediately."

Story continues below

At the moment, Clinton shows no signs of quitting. In West Virginia Wednesday morning, she told reporters: "I'm staying in this race until there's a nominee. And I obviously am going to work as hard as I can to become that nominee....I believe I would be a stronger candidate against Sen McCain, and I believe I would be the best President among the three of us running."

In a Wednesday afternoon fundraising email, Clinton declared, "Today, in every way that I know how, I am expressing my personal determination to keep forging forward in this campaign."

On the money front, it is not uncommon for winning presidential campaigns to pick up some or all of a competitor's debts and obligations, although the size of Clinton's debt and her personal loans to her campaign are unprecedented - somewhere over and above $20 million.

The Clintons have made a total of $109 million since Bill Clinton left the White House in January 2001. This year, however, he has had to cut back on his hugely lucrative speech-making, and sources close to the Clintons say they are not in a financial position to keep investing millions into her bid.

While both Obama and Clinton have broken all Democratic fundraising records, once one of them become the de facto nominee, the floodgates are expected to open even further, as Democratic donors this year are intent on victory.

In addition to an expected tidal wave of cash to the nominee to finance the general election campaign, the Democratic National Committee, which has been struggling financially, will undoubtedly see a repeat of 2004, when it raised an unprecedented $300 million after John Kerry became the undisputed nominee.

"If she leaves the stage gracefully"
That is her problem she has no clue what grace is lately!

Who's telling the truth about this situation? Olberman last night stated Obama's camp has stated they are willing to pay her debts. What the hell is going on? If Obama's people are lying to donors and telling us they are not going to do this and then going to clinton's camp and offering a payoff, they are going to have hell to pay! They're not getting another penny from me as long as this back and forth is going on. Olberman had to have heard this from someone in Obama's camp. I don't think he just made it up. If Obama really isn't going to do this, for the sake of his campaign he'd better make a public statement soon to confirm. I doubt many of the folks supporting his campaign have the luxury of possessing 109 million dollars. She doesn't need middle class Americans going without in order for her to maintain her extreme wealth. Isn't that what she always stating?

Another bogus story about this. Talk about blackmailing someone. If Obama is the presumptive nominee, why are all his supporters so desperate to get rid of Hillary before June 3rd.

Why not let the rest of the states vote? Oh, right because that would a democracy and Obama may look a little foolish when he loses a couple more important states. I guess that's why.

the Queen needs to get out because in her blind quest for power, she s just damaging the future democratic candidate with her campaign tactics taken out of the GOP playbook...if she was running a clean and honorable campaign, there wouldn t be a problem with that...at this point she s just becoming a late night talk show joke target, how sad...OUT WITH THE OLD AND IN WITH THE NEW,THE CLINTONS ARE HISTORY

I wouldn't pop the champaigne cork just yet. The voters still have the power here. BTW, what's negative about stating the facts and asking necessary questions. Are you afraid that the messiah's loafers will get a little wet while he walks on water?

Your statement about the contingencies of the payment of her debt by O campaign was well thought out and a great idea that would make it a little easier for me to get on board, except for one thing. It depends on integrity.

one sure way for Obama to derail the money train for the general election would be to bail out Hillary and Bill and Penn - I think this idea is being floated by the Clintons to gauge public sentiment. Obama can't be stupid enough to fall for this - it would be like that guy on survivor giving up his immunity idol as a sign of reconciliation and then promptly getting voted off the island last night.

Edsall's articles are mysteriously unsubstantiated, and his headlines are grossly misleading. There is no mention by Obama of help with money --indeed, he emphasizes it would be premature to have any concrete discussions at this time. Edsall says in all 3 articles that it is customary for winners to pay losers' debts, or at least to assist them in paying them off (his revised position), yet he offers no support for this -- no instances, no references, no nothing! Furthermore, only in his 2nd article does he indicate it would be against campaign finance law for one candidate to pay off another's debts. In his first article in this series “big rewards await Clinton if she ends campaign now”, he indicates -- again without proof -- it is a “near certainty” that the Obama campaign would agree to pay Clinton's debt if she were to promptly withdraw from the race. Edsall concedes Obama dismissed such rumors as nothing but “chit chat,” but who is chit chatting to you Mr. Edsall?

There is nothing about Obama’s character or practice that suggests he would stoop to such a tactic. What would he even gain from paying Clinton to bow out . . and at this stage of the game?!!! There are many ways for Obama to unify the party short of bribery. God knows who fed Edsall the ideas or what his motives are – perhaps he is only trying to generate (successfully!) hits to this website. But we should take care

I did not donate my hard earned money to the Obama campaign to have it given to the
Clintons to pay off her campaign debts, If see had acted like a person with good sense
she would have dropped out and she would have saved herself a ton on money.

This so called rumor certainly must have had an immediate impact on Obama fund raising, especially the "little donors" via the internet. Does anyone have an info on this? Will Senator Obama have to come out publically and repudiate it as a rumor? If it's not a rumor but factual and an offer with striings attached, so much for old politics. The issue of stewardship of donors contributions needs more precise definition as well as standards of accountability. Just because it isn't illegal doesn't make it acceptable and right.

I think someone needs to wake her up. Perhaps Bill should do her the honors by endorsing Senator Obama!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The problem is that Hillary and Bill consistently made unfavorable comparison to Obama with McCain. Now she has a significant percentage of her voters who will vote for McCain over Obama. After Obama is nominated to the extent the Clintons are still drawing public attention the Republicans can use their previous comparisons to greater effect. Whatever assistance they might give him would be limited to their keeping a low profile.

No way should he pay Hillary the 11 million dollars she loaned herself. If this is the case, what is to stop her from loaning herself more money knowing that it could possibly bancrupt him. She could be planning this to ruin him in the only way she can. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not make this deal with HillBilly.

Obama Campaign - suggestion - tell the Hillary campaign to have (a) Bill Clinton go on the talk circuit ;(b) get money from their elitist friends and business assocs. living in and outside the country ; (c) for both of them to write a book, (d) or pass bills on to the cowardly DNC.
WHY SHOULD HILLARY BE REWARDED BY HAVING THE OBAMA CAMPAIGN PAY HER DEBTS after all their dirty tricks and gutter tactics - actually Clinton should be penalized somehow for incurring more and more debts knowing full well that she had no funds.
JUST MORE EXAMPLES OF HER DISHONESTY AND DISORGANIZATION. Is this woman qualified to be our Commander-in-chief or VP, HELL NO!!!
Also, Senator Obama pl. STAY AWAY FROM HER & HER HUSBAND - DON'T ALLOW THEM TO CAMPAIGN FOR YOU, THEY'LL IMPUGN YOUR NAME AND REPUTATION AT EVERY CHANCE.

Senator Obama, pl do not give Hillary a red cent of the money your faithful and devoted supporters have been sending you over these months. IT WILL BE A MAJOR SLAP IN OUR FACES IF YOU DO - AND WE WILL BE VERY ANGRY WITH YOU.
Senator Obama, pl. think for a minute. If the tables were reversed and your campaign were in financial ruin, do you seriously believe that the Clinton campaign would bail you out. THEY WOULD NOT.
AND PL DO NOT OFFER THE VP SPOT TO HER - she may just accept it still trying to ruin you (and you'll be in a position similar to JFK when Lyndon Johnson to his surprise accepted his VP offer - JFK and RFK were reportedly furious, but the offer could not be taken back.) CAN YOU IMAGINE A WHITE HOUSE WITH Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton and their surrogates cutting your knees from you every single day of your presidency.
PLEASE SAY NO TO BOTH IDEAS. PLEASE, SENATOR OBAMA.

With her recent race-baiting remarks to put the icing on the cake, I wouldn't give her a nickel.

I think she knows she has lost, but is pushing on to undermine Obama's chances in November, giving her another chance in 2012.
