Reward

She has ruled it out, but a prompt withdrawal from the contest for the Democratic nomination offers Sen. Hillary Clinton the prospect of major rewards.

One of the most inviting is the near certainty that the Obama campaign would agree to pay back the $11.4 million she has loaned her own bid, along with an estimated $10 million to $15 million in unpaid campaign expenses.

In addition, Democrats, both those who are loyal and those who are opposed to her campaign, say the odds of her winning a top leadership spot in the Senate would improve dramatically if she gracefully conceded now. The icing on the cake includes an improved political climate, giving Hillary and Bill Clinton the opportunity to heal the rift with the black political community.

"If she leaves the stage gracefully, as Gore did in 2000, she will be able to rebuild her political capital within the party fairly quickly, and over time most of her perceived and real sins will be long forgiven and/or forgotten," said Dan Gerstein, a Democratic consultant and Obama supporter.

While Clinton currently has her eye focused on only one thing, the presidential nomination, if she loses -- as appears increasingly likely -- her stature in the Senate will depend, in part, on whether she is ultimately seen as helping or hurting Obama's chances in November.

That stature, in turn, will be crucial in determining her success if she decides to try to climb the Senate leadership ladder. This year, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada faces what could prove to be a tough re-election fight.

Brookings scholar Tom Mann contends that for Clinton to emerge from the contest without severe wounds, one path might be to redirect the main thrust of her presidential bid away from attacks on Obama to a focus on John McCain.

"Clinton's status in the Democratic party will be enhanced if she finds a timely and honorable way to become a strong supporter of an Obama-led ticket in the general election. She can do that by remaining in the race but directing all of her campaign rhetoric against John McCain or by suspending her campaign immediately."

At the moment, Clinton shows no signs of quitting. In West Virginia Wednesday morning, she told reporters: "I'm staying in this race until there's a nominee. And I obviously am going to work as hard as I can to become that nominee....I believe I would be a stronger candidate against Sen McCain, and I believe I would be the best President among the three of us running."

In a Wednesday afternoon fundraising email, Clinton declared, "Today, in every way that I know how, I am expressing my personal determination to keep forging forward in this campaign."

On the money front, it is not uncommon for winning presidential campaigns to pick up some or all of a competitor's debts and obligations, although the size of Clinton's debt and her personal loans to her campaign are unprecedented - somewhere over and above $20 million.

The Clintons have made a total of $109 million since Bill Clinton left the White House in January 2001. This year, however, he has had to cut back on his hugely lucrative speech-making, and sources close to the Clintons say they are not in a financial position to keep investing millions into her bid.

While both Obama and Clinton have broken all Democratic fundraising records, once one of them become the de facto nominee, the floodgates are expected to open even further, as Democratic donors this year are intent on victory.

In addition to an expected tidal wave of cash to the nominee to finance the general election campaign, the Democratic National Committee, which has been struggling financially, will undoubtedly see a repeat of 2004, when it raised an unprecedented $300 million after John Kerry became the undisputed nominee.

She has ruled it out, but a prompt withdrawal from the contest for the Democratic nomination offers Sen. Hillary Clinton the prospect of major rewards. One of the most inviting is the near certainty ...

Sin#6 - Pride Hilary is willing to fail and fight forever then get something passed that might help people. Whaaa! i need to get my way or I'll go kamikaze on you.

SIn#7 Whitewater and about 50 other scandals Barack had too much class to bring up. Remember republicans have no class. They just have money or religion. They won't let Hilary get off so easy.
Sin #3 - She has pitted woman against men in this country at a level i have never seen. If you criticise Hilary then you are a sexist. This man hating all started with Hilary. How can we demand that Clinton be held accountable when she is president if anytime someone asks a question they are labelled a sexist. That's called PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE.

Sin#8 -She has pitted blacks against whites as even now she stumps that whites won't vote for Obama. She used to say "working class' to seem less racist , but now it's just "whites"

And where is it that the information was provided that Obama would be providing Hillary's bail-out money...to the tune of $11.4+ million...for a campaign that is ALREADY on the ropes? I, for one, would be upset to hear that he was paying ONE NICKEL of the debt of her campaign, or the money she loaned her campaign as she bad-mouthed and stabbed Obama in the back with gross misrepresentations and outright lies? That would mean that money that I've been contributing to Senator Obama's campaign, would be essentially paying for her to have run for free, just having a grand old time. WHAT is the justification? I can't see it, and I can't imagine it happening...she was already down the tubes on her own...why pay her blood money?

Actually - the financial administrator in the Obama campaign has assured us that they will NOT pay off HRC's debt - and that it would be illegal to do so - not to mention completely unethical as it would undermine the support he has as people would go bolistic to have the money given to him used to pay her off. Not to mention he is much too principled to do such a thing. They have stated to "kill that rumor" as it will never happen. You can verify it with them but that was stated earlier today.

I wish fervently that Gore had not left the stage gracefully in 2000. That one was worth fighting to the end.

Sir Thomas B. Edsall,

Please, post the long list of the Sins and Vices of Clintons and let anyone in the DNC who is without sin cast the first stone at the Clintons.

Can you revisit the presidency of Bill Clinton and compare and contrast it with the Republican presidents since Ronald Reagan to date?.

DEMOCRATS ARE HYPOCRITES and BARACK OBAMA is the epitome of Liberal Hypocrisy.
His pastor just proved it.

Madam Speaker Nancy Pelosi has presidential ambition and she is doing her best to frustrate Senator Hillary Clinton to discredit her and upstage her before 2012.
In fact, she thinks she would be a better presidential candidate than Senator Hillary Clinton.

Democrats are their own worst enemies!

Sin#4 - She has destroyed the work of thousands of feminists who have fought to be taken seriously and make woman seem like whining slaves who need to be taken care of like children. Whaaa! the boys are ganging up on me. Whaa!!!!! Protect me all you strong Americans. People are being mean to me. Will she cry when we get attacked by a terrorist or worse will she fire off our nuclear arsenal to prove she is just as tough as a man. YOU NEVER SAW MARGARET THATCHER crying because the boys were picking on her. The boys respected her because she was strong enough not to be coddled. My mother raised 3 kids on her own and never begged for a thing from a man. She now runs a major corporation because she has an unflapple reputation. Her workers don't have time to think of her as a woman because she is much more than just her gender.

Hilary falls back on gender like a crutch. The old way must be stopped. Woman are just as capable as men and I won't be shamed into voting for a candidate because of gender or race.

SIn #1 She sold out America to the very right wing conspiracy that destroyed her health care plan in the 90's. Those same folks now fund Hilary's campaign and as a reward she is going to force Americans to give them their money. In return this "fighter" gets left alone.

Sin #2 She has no grace or honor. She is willing to sink below any humane moral level to win the presidency even if she destroys the Democratic party.

SIn#3 - She has taken so much money from special interests including TRIPLE the money from defense people than BUSH. Multinational corporations are moving to China and destroying our economy and trade balance in the process. It is no longer in their best interests for AMerica to be successful. Hilary started this all with her AGGRESSIVE PUSHING OF NAFTA. This problem started in Mexico with NAFTA.

Nancy would be a better president than the Clintons. She had the good sense to oppose "most favored nation" status for trade with China, but Bill managed to push it through Congress anyway. Nancy has more political experience than Hillary, too.

Yeah, Nancy Pelosi would have been a better president that Hillary? (By the way, you said Clintons, and Bill Clinton was already a Dem president for 8 successful years in case you didn't know).

Nancy Pelosi, the big tough woman who was going to start impeachment hearings against, with dopey Harry Reid and stop the Iraq War.

Yeah, she is much better than Hillary.

You know what, I made a comment based on the wonderful thought that HRC could just disappear and alow Obama to focus on McCain without being an anvil tied around his neck. However, she's made it ABUNDANTLY clear that she has no intention of stopping and in the meanwhile, all she's doing is racking up even further debt. I seriously hope this puts them in a serious financial bind after it's all said and done. I also hope that when people in NY have the opportunity to vote for her again, that she losses horribly.

She is by definition the politics that need to change!

Obama bribing Clinton to quit won't happen. And the other supposed big reward for ending her campaign - a top Senate leadership spot - is suspect. After Kerry was the actual Democratic candidate, not an also-ran, as far as I can tell his Senate reward was nothing.

It will be unwise for Obama to even consider retiring her debt. Her tone and demeanor does not justify even considering this option. She is beyong tenacious and gritty - she is angry, defiant ans has shown the least concern for the party or the nation. Also donors, like myself will be very angry to have our hard earned $ going to someone whose only intention has been to destroy Senator Obama. Senator Obama should just ignore her. Let her continue on her delusional path and become the laughting stock of the nation and the world.

I don't like the idea of paying her off to go away, and it might be used against Senator Obama. Let's be patient, it's a matter of time before we will be spare of her toxic presence!!!!

Cuban-Americans for Obama!!!!!!

'it's a matter of time before we will be spare of her toxic presence!!!' ...What is 'toxic' about her presence? The amazing thing about the Obama crowd is that there is never any substance in any of their over-the-top insults... Nothing anyone has ever said on this site has ever had an real content - how do you live your lives? It's like listening to drunk teen-agers yelling at their parents...

Not that Barack's presence is all that soothing - It's VERY creepy to hear the Harvard-educated, editor of the Harvard law review start speaking in the cadence of a black southern preacher (learned that from Rev. Wright?) to snow the white folks .. it's like he's trying to sell snake oil...

Nothing like a manipulative 'bargainer' to give you a really bad feeling about his capabilities... who's he going to pretend to be next? I'm sure he's got his back story already prepped for the next 'Count Down'....( is Keith Olbermann gay? it's hard to understand why else he'd be so in love with Barack...)

OK, my sister and brother Obama supporters, let's get real here. The Clintons didn't start the practice of retiring an opponent's campaign debts. It's part of the cost of playing big-stake politics. I agree it's extra galling to do it for the Clintons, especially as they continue to incur debt. However, the Clintons are in their end game strategy, mostly for themselves, but also on behalf of supporters. This is real politics.

I'd like to suggest we start behaving and talking more like Obama. He's got to unite the party. He needs ever-increasing moral authority to do it. Because we are an integral part of his campaign, he needs us to help accomplish that.

I consider the money I gave to Obama free for his use to win the nomination and the presidency. I've not heard anything to contradict that he's used our money irresponsibly. All reports so far are that he has run an efficient, effective campaign.

Hillary's going to come out of this with something. Retiring the Clintons' debt would be a small price to pay to keep HRC from the vice presidency if she's angling for it. If HRC were the VP nominee--something I dismissed out of hand when it was first floated--it would break my heart but I could not vote for Obama. I absolutely want to turn the page. I believe in the fierce urgency of now. This dynamic isn't much acknowledged by the MSM I've watched lately.

It's too late. The Clintons have proven what kind of scum they are.
If Obama gives them money that was intended for his campaign, he will lose a lot more than he gains. The Clintons deserve nothing.

I lost one job recently, but still managed to give money weekly to the Obama campaign. My neighbors here on the Hill, which voted over 80 percent for Obama, have given thousands. We will be livid if my money is diverted to pay Clinton's failed bid. She's rich, she decided to stay in after Super Tuesday, against all odds, she and her supporters should pay for her decisions.
Isn't there some kind of law to protect my donations?? This is BS. I hope this is a joke.

THey won't be hurting for money or a place in politics. No matter how much you Obama supporters like to think they will be.

I was going to donate to Senator Obama but I will support him in other ways as I do not want one dime of mine going in the pockets of the Clintons. This is exactly what I mean. Why is sheing being rewarded for disrupting the Democratic party and trying to sabotage Obama. Why should he bail her out. Obama doesn't owe her anything and I will be writing the Obama campaign not to bail her out. Don't trust her. Look at the articles and the news, she has no intention of quitting, and she is continuing to take jabs at Obama. The DNC , her family, her supporters need to tell her the truth, QUIT, HRC is still showing her bullying tactics she has shown all along and unless these undeclared superdelegates step in, she will continue to try and tear Obama down. Why, you tell me, should we feel sorry for her and bail her out. You can guarantee, I won't and don't support her.
