I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Reward

She has ruled it out, but a prompt withdrawal from the contest for the Democratic nomination offers Sen. Hillary Clinton the prospect of major rewards.

One of the most inviting is the near certainty that the Obama campaign would agree to pay back the $11.4 million she has loaned her own bid, along with an estimated $10 million to $15 million in unpaid campaign expenses.

In addition, Democrats, both those who are loyal and those who are opposed to her campaign, say the odds of her winning a top leadership spot in the Senate would improve dramatically if she gracefully conceded now. The icing on the cake includes an improved political climate, giving Hillary and Bill Clinton the opportunity to heal the rift with the black political community.

"If she leaves the stage gracefully, as Gore did in 2000, she will be able to rebuild her political capital within the party fairly quickly, and over time most of her perceived and real sins will be long forgiven and/or forgotten," said Dan Gerstein, a Democratic consultant and Obama supporter.

While Clinton currently has her eye focused on only one thing, the presidential nomination, if she loses -- as appears increasingly likely -- her stature in the Senate will depend, in part, on whether she is ultimately seen as helping or hurting Obama's chances in November.

That stature, in turn, will be crucial in determining her success if she decides to try to climb the Senate leadership ladder. This year, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada faces what could prove to be a tough re-election fight.

Brookings scholar Tom Mann contends that for Clinton to emerge from the contest without severe wounds, one path might be to redirect the main thrust of her presidential bid away from attacks on Obama to a focus on John McCain.

"Clinton's status in the Democratic party will be enhanced if she finds a timely and honorable way to become a strong supporter of an Obama-led ticket in the general election. She can do that by remaining in the race but directing all of her campaign rhetoric against John McCain or by suspending her campaign immediately."

At the moment, Clinton shows no signs of quitting. In West Virginia Wednesday morning, she told reporters: "I'm staying in this race until there's a nominee. And I obviously am going to work as hard as I can to become that nominee....I believe I would be a stronger candidate against Sen McCain, and I believe I would be the best President among the three of us running."

In a Wednesday afternoon fundraising email, Clinton declared, "Today, in every way that I know how, I am expressing my personal determination to keep forging forward in this campaign."

On the money front, it is not uncommon for winning presidential campaigns to pick up some or all of a competitor's debts and obligations, although the size of Clinton's debt and her personal loans to her campaign are unprecedented - somewhere over and above $20 million.

The Clintons have made a total of $109 million since Bill Clinton left the White House in January 2001. This year, however, he has had to cut back on his hugely lucrative speech-making, and sources close to the Clintons say they are not in a financial position to keep investing millions into her bid.

While both Obama and Clinton have broken all Democratic fundraising records, once one of them become the de facto nominee, the floodgates are expected to open even further, as Democratic donors this year are intent on victory.

In addition to an expected tidal wave of cash to the nominee to finance the general election campaign, the Democratic National Committee, which has been struggling financially, will undoubtedly see a repeat of 2004, when it raised an unprecedented $300 million after John Kerry became the undisputed nominee.

She has ruled it out, but a prompt withdrawal from the contest for the Democratic nomination offers Sen. Hillary Clinton the prospect of major rewards. One of the most inviting is the near certainty ...

I contributed the allowable maximum to the Obama campaign. I would not have done so if I thought there was a possibility my money would end up in Bill & Hillary's pockets. That being said, if there IS a bailout, it should be made contingent upon the Clintons fully supporting the Democratic ticket AND aggressively campaigning for Obama. Under no circumstances should any monies be paid to the Clinton campaign until AFTER the general election. AND -- if Bill does anything to embarrass Obama, the Clintons forfeit everything.

Obama doesn't need to 'bargain' to become the nominee, he has won it fairly and squarely. If Hillary wants her debts paid, she ought to do the right thing, for a 'change', and bow out gracefully and put her full support behind Obama. Deepening the debt from here is just draining the funds that can be used in the general election. The DNC will come to a decision regarding the Florida and Michigan delegates, it's not up to Clinton or Obama to decide that issue. Any other decisions will be up to Obama, and Obama only, as the nominee, as to who will be his running mate or who will hold what positions in his cabinet, etc. There's no need for negotiating on these points. He will base those decisions upon who will best fit with his plans for change in Washington, which is the way it should be. Carrying on with the campaign for the nominee isn't necessary. The votes in the remaining states would count if it continues, but they won't change the end result. Please Senator Clinton, do the right thing and help Obama garner the support he'll need in ALL states. Get behind his voter registration drive and get in line supporting him as our next president.

Hillary needs a break, to regroup, and organize the longshoremen, so they can continue their strike.

Wow - this really makes me mad.

Why should clinton get any kind of reward after the way that she has conducted herself.

I agree, the Clintons would never help Obama if this was reversed! They would be laughing they asses off that a black man could dare to think he could beat the Clinton machine! The clinton's created the mud pond, let them now stay in the mud they created! They are very scary people with no morals and I fear they would rather bloody up Obama than concede with dignity because dignity is not part of their d&a.

The Obama campaign is discussing this issue - whether to pay for clinton's debt. If you have an opinion on this, you have to let Obama know. Writing on huffpo won't get the message to the people who are making the decision.

Write to Senator Obama and tell him how you feel:

Or call Obama campaigh headquarters.

I think that if Obama has so much extra money he should save it for the General Election and he should stop sending requests for more $$.

If Obama does pay off clinton's debt it's going to be very hard for me to donate money for the GE. Who knows if he'll use it to payoff McCain

Thank you for posting the number of the Obama campaign. I just called them and was informed that they will absolutely not be paying of senator Clinton's debt. Thank God

What is wrong with you people?

Throughout this campaign, as an avid Obama supporter, neutral and eventually as a Clinton supporter I've been astonished at the disconnect between Obama's platform and the hatemongering of his supporters.

If you want to win the Presidency you really need to stop the ugliness and hate mongering.Clinton supporters have become very alienated and you are responsible. If you really want to win the WH then you will make an effort at civility and dialogue with Clinton supporters and stop the malicious rhetoric against Clinton. I'm not optimistic.
Clinton needs to be graceful in loss and work hard to heal the rifts but I would submit Obama and his supporters need to do the same and you people need to do more than most.

The media has been irresponsible but you have been worse and responsible for muchdivision. You've created a toxic atmosphere that has driven people initially happy to vote for either candidate into feeling estranged and pushed out with your idemeaning malicious insults, even some supporter of BHO.

There is no reason to believe Clinton won't work her ass off for Obama except for your own desire to hate. She and Bill Clinton are and have always been completely committed to the Democratic party.
She does not have any reason to destroy the party though I am beginning to believe its a good idea and maybe a third party will finally emerge.

Thank you - the Obama crowd is either a bunch of lonely losers who need to hate or a bunch of racists who need to feel that they can be redeemed...

I don't know anyone who will vote for Obama ... his crowd has made so many personal attacks on Clinton that they can never be a credible force for uniting the party.

The beggars are starting - an Obama guy called me asking for money today and I told him that I would never vote for Barack and he asked me why. I told him to log onto any blog and especially the Kos and that should be enough for him to understand why I hate the man.

She will not end her campaign until Obama has 2025.

Expect to see continued divisiveness, calls for rule changing especially for her, and lamenting that the Democrats aren't like the GOP.

Quite frankly, I wish she'd leave the party.

We don't need Democrats like her.

Obama don't give her any money. And don't offer her the VP position.

HIllary leave the dem party? I don't think so. But are you guys really part of the Dem party. I could have sworn you were Bushies.

Note to Hillary: Please don't take the VP position. Obama and his supporters don't deserve you on their ticket. Let them try to win it without you and your supporters.

Never going to happen.

I hope this is not the case. When I gave my money to the Obama Campaign (in dribbles of $50 and $100 to be sure), I never expected a cent would be used for Hillary Clinton, except to beat her politically.

Obama do not give Hillary Clinton our money we sent for your campaign - Hillary is a millionaire and if her supporters did not want to send her money and if she wanted to continue to run knowing she could not get the numbers then she should go to her lobbyists friends and elite buddies and get her money back - How much more is Hillary and the media going to agitate Obama's supporters -

Hillary should never be considered for another job that requires telling the truth - she is a known liar and she should not hold a job requiring truth and honesty -

Here's the problem: Hillary knows damn well she's entering a negotiation. She knows party insiders will do whatever it takes to heal the party. She knows they will say let's give Hillary time to accept her losses. Let's pay-off her campaign debts. Let's allow her time to win a couple more primaries. Let's give her credit for seating the Florida and Michigan delegates. Let's make her the Senate Majority Leader. Let's nominate Bill Clinton to the Supreme Court. And on, and on, and on. But why should Hillary be rewarded? Her incredible selfishness has seriously divided the party. Aren't there principles here? WHY THE HELL CAN'T HILLARY JUST DO THE RIGHT THING? WHY CAN'T SHE JUST GRACEFULLY LEAVE ON HER OWN?

Why don't you see that? She was way ahead with blacks early in the campaign. Obama wasn't even close. She lost them when she and Bill inserted racially charged issues, and when she went after Wright that sealed the deal. She lost the black vote all on her own.

I am a 55 year old feminist white woman from a "small, caucus, reliably blue" state. I have always voted Democrat. If Mrs. Clinton becomes the candidate, I too will vote my conscience. Nader 08.

Why would the party risk alienating the African American population (loyal Democratic voters), the Liberal Elite and well educated (deep pockets of the party), and the Youth vote (the future of the party), in order to placate the "Reagan Democrats" who are a hair away from voting for Republicans in any election? They commonly vote against their own economic interest, often on one issue (guns, abortion). Their track record indicates that the party cannot count on them. I would not throw away a single liberal vote in order to take that gamble. We have many more registered democrats now, thanks to Obama's campaign of Hope. There is no reason to beg for votes from people who are not reliable Democrats. If Mrs. Clinton wins the nomination, it will be by pandering to the racism of the "Reagan Democrats" or "Republicrats."

If Obama's campaign agrees to retire Clintons campaign debt, no more of my hard earned cash will go to his campaign in the future. I am NOT a reliable democrat, I am a reliable LIBERAL. Hillary will lose all on her own. Let her pay the price.

I call upon Liberals everywhere to keep our party from nominating a candidate who is pandering to people who are not reliable nor credible liberal voters.

I hope that Senator Obama does not pay one dime of HIllary's campaign costs. It infuriates me that somone suggested this on his behalf as if it is expected and will happen. It 'has' happened in the past but their is NO REQUIREMENT for him to do this and I have donated money to Senator Obama. I would be furious to think he used it to pay for Hillary's mess and most especially he should not replace the personal funds she put into this campaign. That's outrageous and basically like giving her a free run to spend as much as she wants to during the rest of the primary with the notion that HE would be paying for it anyway....DISGUSTING!!!! REPULSIVE!!!!! I DON'T WANT TO DONATE ANOTHER DIME TO OBAMA UNTIL I KNOW THAT HE WILL NOT USE IT TO PAY FOR HILLARY'S CAMPAIGN!!!

I feel the same way you do! I wonder if she is doing this just for that reason though? I wouldn't put it past her and her scummy surrogates. Look at it this way, she continues to run up massive expenses, continues to weaken him, and does this all with the help of Obama's campaign coffers. Sounds like a Clinton plan to me. I am steaming mad!
He should stand up right now and delclare he will not finance her reckless spending. In fact I am writing to Barack's campaign to tell him how we feel about this. I helped him win my state and he needs to know that this rumor can sink his future donations.
I suggest all who feel the same to email his campaign

She lost a long time ago. I think her mistake was the way she handed the first few months and targets for fund raising. She also didn't take into account her strengths and accomplishments in the senate. I was never going to vote for Clinton. She is not her husband, but an entirely separate person with a different set of skills. During Bush's re-election, she said if she new them what she knew now, she would still support going to war. At that time the poll numbers were with her and the press had not gotten it. That position was completely unacceptable and was a reason why, I would never find a way to vote for her.

I am slowly getting irritated by alot of Clinton supporters say "Obama is unelectable in November." That is a lie. The ones that are saying that are the ones that will make him unelectable because they aren't REAL democrats anyway who will vote for McCain. If Democrats do not win the presidency it will be because of people like this. The same goes if Clinton was the nominee and Obama supporters said that about Clinton. No matter what happens, if you are a REAL DEMOCRAT vote for your party and stop being silly!!!!

No way! Let Hillary pay her own bills... the idea that any of Obama's campaign donations will go to pay Clinton's bills is outrageous - Politics reeks, but that is ridiculous! Don't count on any donations from me if I find out that this crap is actually happening.

If Obama puts Hillary on his ticket, he will not win - he must understand that to win, he must win based on his own - If he can't win without Hillary then so be it - I believe he will lose the black vote if he puts her on his ticket - I believe that the blacks will not give up their integrity to win - Hillary has demeaned/insulted the black voters and essentially called them insignificant - Hillary and Bill will be a destructive force because they will be "bitter" losers - The media and these pundits continue to want to agitate Obama's supporters -
