Reward

She has ruled it out, but a prompt withdrawal from the contest for the Democratic nomination offers Sen. Hillary Clinton the prospect of major rewards.

One of the most inviting is the near certainty that the Obama campaign would agree to pay back the $11.4 million she has loaned her own bid, along with an estimated $10 million to $15 million in unpaid campaign expenses.

In addition, Democrats, both those who are loyal and those who are opposed to her campaign, say the odds of her winning a top leadership spot in the Senate would improve dramatically if she gracefully conceded now. The icing on the cake includes an improved political climate, giving Hillary and Bill Clinton the opportunity to heal the rift with the black political community.

"If she leaves the stage gracefully, as Gore did in 2000, she will be able to rebuild her political capital within the party fairly quickly, and over time most of her perceived and real sins will be long forgiven and/or forgotten," said Dan Gerstein, a Democratic consultant and Obama supporter.

While Clinton currently has her eye focused on only one thing, the presidential nomination, if she loses -- as appears increasingly likely -- her stature in the Senate will depend, in part, on whether she is ultimately seen as helping or hurting Obama's chances in November.

That stature, in turn, will be crucial in determining her success if she decides to try to climb the Senate leadership ladder. This year, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada faces what could prove to be a tough re-election fight.

Brookings scholar Tom Mann contends that for Clinton to emerge from the contest without severe wounds, one path might be to redirect the main thrust of her presidential bid away from attacks on Obama to a focus on John McCain.

"Clinton's status in the Democratic party will be enhanced if she finds a timely and honorable way to become a strong supporter of an Obama-led ticket in the general election. She can do that by remaining in the race but directing all of her campaign rhetoric against John McCain or by suspending her campaign immediately."

Story continues below

At the moment, Clinton shows no signs of quitting. In West Virginia Wednesday morning, she told reporters: "I'm staying in this race until there's a nominee. And I obviously am going to work as hard as I can to become that nominee....I believe I would be a stronger candidate against Sen McCain, and I believe I would be the best President among the three of us running."

In a Wednesday afternoon fundraising email, Clinton declared, "Today, in every way that I know how, I am expressing my personal determination to keep forging forward in this campaign."

On the money front, it is not uncommon for winning presidential campaigns to pick up some or all of a competitor's debts and obligations, although the size of Clinton's debt and her personal loans to her campaign are unprecedented - somewhere over and above $20 million.

The Clintons have made a total of $109 million since Bill Clinton left the White House in January 2001. This year, however, he has had to cut back on his hugely lucrative speech-making, and sources close to the Clintons say they are not in a financial position to keep investing millions into her bid.

While both Obama and Clinton have broken all Democratic fundraising records, once one of them become the de facto nominee, the floodgates are expected to open even further, as Democratic donors this year are intent on victory.

In addition to an expected tidal wave of cash to the nominee to finance the general election campaign, the Democratic National Committee, which has been struggling financially, will undoubtedly see a repeat of 2004, when it raised an unprecedented $300 million after John Kerry became the undisputed nominee.

She has ruled it out, but a prompt withdrawal from the contest for the Democratic nomination offers Sen. Hillary Clinton the prospect of major rewards. One of the most inviting is the near certainty ...

If the Obama campaign were to pay Hillary's debts, they would be certain to end the flow of contributions to their own campaign. Sounds like more Clinton mischief. They (Obama campaign) must certainly understand that we haven't scraped together all that money to bail out the Clintons.

I would not contribute another dime to the Obama campaign if ANY money was given to bail out Clinton. I did not donate to buy out or pay off the Clintons or to make them go away.

There is nothing like bribery. It's these kinds of payoffs that are just part of the same old same old. I am also against Obama paying off Clinton's debt situation.

I think both Hillary and her husband, Bill, are a bit on the demented side. So much so, that they make John McCain seem to be psychologically fit.

Why the heck should WE pay her money back. I hope the heck that is not coming from donations that I have made to Obama's campaign.

She has 109 MILLION DOLLARS , she is the ELITIST , not OBAMA. She can afford to take the hit.

I truly hope that Obama's campaign does not pay her money so that she can "pay back" her "loan" to herself. If that happens, I want everyone her to give me money so I can pay back the loan I made to myself for living expenses. If she needs to get money from people she should be looking at Mark Penn.

Do not rule out the possiblity that the Clintons would attempt to push for and later exploit a "buyout" to further hurt Obama's image and erode his support. They can't be too overt in their sabatoge, so they will have to be especially devious, which shouldn't be a stretch for them.

My hope, however, is that all the nasty, old-fashion politics will continue to backfire. I think they are being exposed a bit more. They can't dupe us as readily as before. It must be eating them alive.

As someone mentioned, it's common ground that the Clinton's hold grudges. But the flipslide is that many of the people they burned on their way up will also have long memories. Payback!

I'm a white male who couldn't care less about race or gender. I care about relative honesty and character. And hope. For heaven's sake, let's TRY something new.

With all the media talkinga about how Obama should cover Hillary's debts, I can only assume that the Clinton Camp itself is floating the idea. It would certainly point out what is most important to her...

I would never vote for McCain, but if Obama were to take her on as his VP, then I'll get to save four dollars in Nov. I'll vote for Obama, but never for a Clinton.
If she were to become VP under Obama, his life would be about as long as a Tsese Fly.
People tend to end with rigamortis that hang around the Clinton's.

CAN WE JUST HOLD ON FOR ONE SECOND? THIS IS NOT SOMETHING THAT IS CONCRETE, WAIT AND SEE. WE SHOULD NOT OVER REACT, LET'S WIN THIS NOMINATION AND SEE WHERE THINGS ARE. IN THE MEANWHILE CONSIDER THAT HILLARY CAN BE A PITBULL WHEN IT COMES TO REPUBLICAN TACTICS, I AM NOT NECESSARILY OPPOSE TO HER DOING ALL THE ATTACKING OF MCSAME FOR NOW. BESIDES, IF THIS WAS AN AGREEMENT, THE TIMELINE IS VERY SHORT FOR HER TO ACCEPT THIS DEAL ASSUMING IT WOULD BE PRIOR TO THE NEXT PRIMARY. IF OUR ULTIMATE GOAL IS TO DEFEAT THESE repub-lican'ts, WE MUST MAKE SMART DECISIONS!!!!

I have contributed a little money to the Obama campaign, and will probably give more. But there is something that concerns me at this time. Although there is a precedent for the winning candidate to cover the debts of the losing candidate in a primary election, some aspects of this primary season are unprecedented. First, this campaign is being financed by people who give small amounts, taken from small budgets for something they believe in. Second, the opposing campaign has conducted itself as if they represent the other party, not just another view from the Democratic Party.
I would have to protest if the Obama campaign pays off all the Clinton campaign debts, including the loans Senator Clinton made to herself so that she could continue this campaign past the time when it was only viable if negative attacks would turn it around. As far as I am concerned those "loans" are now "gifts". It would be different if the money for this campaign came from the wealthy and corporate donors. It is unseemly to ask middle class voters to repay loans to millionaires like the Clintons.
I would suggest that a compromise would be for the Obama campaign to pay all of the Clinton debts to vendors directly, and only those incurred up to this point. It is Senator Clinton's choice to continue and she should make that choice in light of her current financial state.

Where does this ideaa of "pay-back- Clinton's- debt " come from? It seems there is a spin out of Obama's campaign having a donation drive for voters to match Clinton's loan. It means they aim to reach the amount of her loan: 11.6 lillions. It doesn't mean they are asking for donation to pay off Clinton's loan. That is a big difference.

That makes no sense. Post after post in this blog has stated "if Obama gives my donation to Hillary I will not donate any more money to him."

The suggestion that he might pay Hillary's loan did not come from Obama's camp.

I think she's pressuring him - "I won't step down until you pay my debt."

Tthis was brought up Tuesday night by the MSM. It never came out of the Obama campaign.

This is just one of many possibilities being discussed by the talking heads. We still don’t know if the Obama camp. is even willing to deal. Let us wait and see what happens before we get upset.

How about we wait until WE'VE BEATEN McCAIN?

Then maybe an appeal specifically to retire her debt. But never cheat Obama's donors by giving the money they donated to OBAMA, to Clinton.

If she doesn't hurt when she leaves this campaign, she'll do it again. If her stupidity doesn't hurt her, she sets an example that would encourage others to disrupt the Democratic party in the same way in furture contests.

If Obama pays Clinton's debts, that major betrayal would make his money will dry up.

This sounds like throw the dog a bone with added promises of big rewards if she becomes a good little girl and smiles for the cameras and gracefully drops out of the race. What crap is this? Hillary has shown that she will lie, trash people to benefit herself at the moment it seems profitable, turn around and put a spin on mistakes in policy, tactics and arguments that have become weights around her neck. The only thing Hillary has shown me is that she should not hold any high office in government ... of any kind.
