Reward

She has ruled it out, but a prompt withdrawal from the contest for the Democratic nomination offers Sen. Hillary Clinton the prospect of major rewards.

One of the most inviting is the near certainty that the Obama campaign would agree to pay back the $11.4 million she has loaned her own bid, along with an estimated $10 million to $15 million in unpaid campaign expenses.

In addition, Democrats, both those who are loyal and those who are opposed to her campaign, say the odds of her winning a top leadership spot in the Senate would improve dramatically if she gracefully conceded now. The icing on the cake includes an improved political climate, giving Hillary and Bill Clinton the opportunity to heal the rift with the black political community.

"If she leaves the stage gracefully, as Gore did in 2000, she will be able to rebuild her political capital within the party fairly quickly, and over time most of her perceived and real sins will be long forgiven and/or forgotten," said Dan Gerstein, a Democratic consultant and Obama supporter.

While Clinton currently has her eye focused on only one thing, the presidential nomination, if she loses -- as appears increasingly likely -- her stature in the Senate will depend, in part, on whether she is ultimately seen as helping or hurting Obama's chances in November.

That stature, in turn, will be crucial in determining her success if she decides to try to climb the Senate leadership ladder. This year, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada faces what could prove to be a tough re-election fight.

Brookings scholar Tom Mann contends that for Clinton to emerge from the contest without severe wounds, one path might be to redirect the main thrust of her presidential bid away from attacks on Obama to a focus on John McCain.

"Clinton's status in the Democratic party will be enhanced if she finds a timely and honorable way to become a strong supporter of an Obama-led ticket in the general election. She can do that by remaining in the race but directing all of her campaign rhetoric against John McCain or by suspending her campaign immediately."

Story continues below

At the moment, Clinton shows no signs of quitting. In West Virginia Wednesday morning, she told reporters: "I'm staying in this race until there's a nominee. And I obviously am going to work as hard as I can to become that nominee....I believe I would be a stronger candidate against Sen McCain, and I believe I would be the best President among the three of us running."

In a Wednesday afternoon fundraising email, Clinton declared, "Today, in every way that I know how, I am expressing my personal determination to keep forging forward in this campaign."

On the money front, it is not uncommon for winning presidential campaigns to pick up some or all of a competitor's debts and obligations, although the size of Clinton's debt and her personal loans to her campaign are unprecedented - somewhere over and above $20 million.

The Clintons have made a total of $109 million since Bill Clinton left the White House in January 2001. This year, however, he has had to cut back on his hugely lucrative speech-making, and sources close to the Clintons say they are not in a financial position to keep investing millions into her bid.

While both Obama and Clinton have broken all Democratic fundraising records, once one of them become the de facto nominee, the floodgates are expected to open even further, as Democratic donors this year are intent on victory.

In addition to an expected tidal wave of cash to the nominee to finance the general election campaign, the Democratic National Committee, which has been struggling financially, will undoubtedly see a repeat of 2004, when it raised an unprecedented $300 million after John Kerry became the undisputed nominee.

She has ruled it out, but a prompt withdrawal from the contest for the Democratic nomination offers Sen. Hillary Clinton the prospect of major rewards. One of the most inviting is the near certainty ...

Guys, if paying her off gets her out of the campaign, I'm all for it - and it seems like a reasonable campaign expense.

Yes, its a bit of old politics there (read: thats how its traditionally been done), but would you rather have a sidelined Clinton who lost, or a Clinton yapping until August?

I want a sidelined, back in New York Hillary Clinton, who also pays off her own campaign debts. It was her choice to mismanage her campaign and as an Obama supporter, I don't want one red cent going to her.

WFV,

I hear you and agree - but recent history shows us neither one of those things are going to happen. There is one outcome, an Obama nomination, that has three possible solutions:

1. Hillary drops out after all the primaries, no money from Obama
2. Hillary drops out in August, no money from Obama
3. Hillary drops out now, debts paid by Obama

Which one of those solutions is both best for Obama and the party? The last thing we need is to cut off our nose despite our face - and paying this debt may be a first step in party unity.

I DON'T LIKE IT - but, we know what we can expect from Hillary. I Hillary "in debt" to Obama working for "the nominee" is preferable to a loose cannon

Pay Clinton's bills? Hell no.

Nooooooooooooooooooooo! I have not donated hard-earned money to Obama to have it given to Clinton to pay off her mismanaged debts. This crackpot idea is "old politics" once again rearing it's ugly head. This is absolutely unacceptable. She has dug her own hole and tried to take down & do severe damage to Obama in the process, and it would be so wrong for Obama's campaign to bail her out. Let her go to her rich benefactors again to help retire her debt.

As much as I want this awful woman out of the race, the thought that our donations would go to pay her off for millions of dollars' worth of nasty, scurrilous attacks on Obama just really ticks me off.

No one forced her to relentless attack Obama to drive him off message, for so many weeks if not months past the date at which she still reasonably had a chance of winning the nomination. Throughout she's acted as if she was owed the Presidency, that it was her divine right as a Clinton to be prom queen forever, to rise in glory to what she feels she so richly deserves after her phony 35 years of 'service' (to Walmart, to her rich clients at her law firm in Little Rock, to her junkets around the world as first lady).

Bill can easily make back the $11 million or so in a matter of weeks if he sets his mind to it. And after all, by Hillary dropping out Bill won't have to divulge the big bucks donors to his presidential library. How sweet is that?

No, paying Hillary off is not the right way to go. It's almost as revolting a concept as Obama having Hill/Bill as a dual vice president.

It seems low-life of Clinton to ask Obama to pay her bills when she forced him to spend millions just to defend her attacks... just to continue running against her long after she had effectively lost the nomination.

Do you think that's why she refuses to go away - that she has told the Obama campaign she won't go until they pay her bils?

I want to give more money to Obama - I haven't hit the limit yet - but I will be reluctant to send money that will go to bail out Hillary.

Thanks you have single handily caused me to quit the Obama campaign.

I have no words to describe the betrayal I feel at the prospect that they would give a dime to that filthy rich SHREW.

YOu should be careful at the crap you publish because it could have very horrible effects on people like me - who believe in this nation's ability to rise above balckmail and unethical dealing. I am so angry now... I gave my hard earned money to help change Washington - not to continue its filthy politics.

Contact the Obama campaign and let them know what you think. I did it yesterday, and asked them to address this rumour publicly.

Please don't rush to judgement - wait for a response. Remember, not everything we read is true.

AmericanWoman, don't quit the campaign just because some blogger on Huffpo THINKS that Obama may retire Clinton's debts!!! He offers no proof of this whatsoever.

I would be very shocked to see Obama do this. Please wait to see what actually happens. I have not been let down by the Obama campaign so far.

I don't like the idea of bailing Hillary either, but it would be the classy thing for the Obama campaign to do. And if his supporters want to show their own class, they (we) should go along with it. Gritting one's teeth and swallowing bitter pills and doing all that crap that we don't want to do (but really is neither unethical or wrong, just unpleasant) is something we're all going to have to do to get over Clinton and get to November.

Rise above it! Yes we can!

Hillary has all the political capital she needs. The party big wigs and financiers have been behind Hillary and are still behind her.

Edsall states Hillary can heal the rift with the rift with the African American community. Who told him that? Where did he get this nonsense?

No one told the African American community to vote in a block against Hillary. Hillary and Bill so insulted them that the vote represents the repugnance of the Clintons to Black people.

Hillary and Bill played the race card and it was a betrayal to Black people. Most Black people had not heard of Obama. Plus there was a large segment of Black women who would have voted for Hillary just because she was a woman. Considering the fact that women do most of the voting and many of the men are disenfranchised because of criminal convictions.

In other words there was no reason for the Clintons to turn this into a race war, but that is what they did. The Clintons attempted to play the race card to get White voters to vote out of hate for them.

The problem is that after Bush White folk are not feeling too good about themselves. It isn't that White folk now hate other White folk, it is just that they would vote for a ROCK if they felt it would be HONEST and would not steal their pensions.

And they know Hillary IS CHALLENGED WHEN IT COMES TO INTEGRITY.

the race card debate is imaginary. AA are voting for Obama for obvious reason, he's AA too. this race has massive associations to identity. and thats fine, just as its fine that many women support HRC for the same reason, this is America after all and we are free to vote as we see fit. to compare the track records of the 2 on civil rights is to show the absolute lack of racism in a long political history of the Clintons. i hope that Obama can meet the dreams of AA that are so ardently supporting, but i truly wonder if he will dissappoint. let's remember that he has not run as an AA candidate, anything but and worked to distance himself from it for the entirety of this campaign and political career.
Obama is a fine candidate, but he's a politician too and has worked diligently not to be portrayed as the "black candidate". all these calls of racism against the Clintons are bogus, convenient for sure, but laughable. the race b/t 2 is pretty much over, we should be working to come together now, continuing the hateful blasts against Clinton and her supporters could cause immense damage and increase the divide. close to half the voters in this election support HRC, isn't it time to start trying to bring them into fold and end all the hateful and divisive rhetoric?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:07 AM on 05/08/2008

Good luck trying to bring us into the fold. I have never been so insulted by a political race in my life. Hillary is without question the smartest and strongest candidate. Despite being beaten to death in the media for the entire primary campaign, Barack Obama has been unable to have a complete victory. Hillary has a lot of support. Barack Obama is not ready to be president. I will not vote for him because he is not ready to be president. Of course, all of you will say I won't vote for him because I'm a racist. It has become clear that the race card is the only card the African American community knows how to play. You have played it rather successfully. Congratulations.

Well yes, you all told the black community to vote for Barack the day the media and the black community decided to portray the Clintons as racists in South Carolina. This was when all of the black community decided to stand in unity against the awful racism they face in this country. It is the black community that is playing the race card constantly. It is really sickening.

Clinton should never be rewarded for acting like Carl Rove. She played the old, sick, politics and lost and now wants the party to bless her. No thanks. I gave to the Obama campaign and find it insulting that my money will ultimatly go to pay for the ads that were so against everything that I was trying to do when I donated the money.

Let her rot on the vine. She should be prevented from ever getting any kind of leadership in the senate. The Clinton's hold grudges - as any insider will tell you - and we need a fresh start to the new politics. She is quite evil - as far as I know.

You have to run a different type of campaign against someone in your party than you would someone outside the party, and she ran the type of attacks that you would expect to see in the general. She's taken her foot off the gas since Tuesday, and I think most of us will be able to look beyond the kitchen sink strategy and realize that this is the same Hillary Clinton that we've supported for two decades. She's intelligent, hard-working, tenacious, and as tough as the day is long. Until the political climate in this country changes, her ability to run a scrappy campaign that doesn't back down from anything should be bottled and given to every democrat considering a run for office even if it's for mayor in a town of twelve people.

Screw that! The Clintons can handle their own affairs, they are millionaires and they are surrounded by the Party's best fundraisers. I'm not rich, and I give as much as I can afford to Obama to fight back against Hillary and McCain, not to pay for attack ads against my candidate! Under no circumstances should he give a penny of his supporters' money to the Clintons. They knew what they were getting themselves into, they have been reckless with their money, they have been reckless with their Party, they have put their political ambition above EVERYTHING else, and now they expect Obama's "young, naive, elitist, latte sipping supporters" do pay her back??

I think you have absolutely nothing to back up your assertion that there is a "near certainty that the Obama campaign would agree to pay back the $11.4 million she has loaned her own bid, along with an estimated $10 million to $15 million in unpaid campaign expenses." What is that based on?

That would be crazy, Obama paying Hillary for Republican attack ads against him, that she did well after it was obvious she wasn't going to be the nominee?? How do you think Obama's donors would feel about $11.4 million of their hard earned money going straight into Bill and Hillary's already loaded bank account?? Basically saying that is an option is telling Hillary that she can loan herself millions more to use to attack Obama, because Obama's supporters will pick up the tab after she finally drops out.

This is a seriously offensive idea. We donated money in increments of 25 and 50 dollars to DEFEAT the Clintons--not to enrich them. Some of us could barely afford it. If the Obama campaign turns our hard-earned dollars over to those multi-millionaires, there will be a SERIOUS backlash.

I understand that emotions are high right now, but let's be reasonable:

If she drops out now, paying down her debt would be cheaper than having to run against her for a few more months. Right?

If he pays down her debt, he can more graciously deny her the VP spot...which I think is a much more important choice for him.

Let her spin herself into tiger some more. Obama cannot afford to pay her debt, because if he does, I won't give him any more money.

Obama does not have to pay money to NOT give her ANYTHING. Are you kidding me?

He owes her nothing. She cost the world plenty. It would be gracious of HER to pay HIM a few million to compensate for the money he had to spend defending her spurious attacks.

No. She is in charge of her campaign and she has mismanaged it in so many ways. There aren't "a few more months" left in the campaign, hopefully no more than three weeks.

No. No. No. She chose to overspend, she can pay the debts herself.
