I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Msnbc War

In a speech at Harvard's Institute of Politics on Monday, Chris Matthews admitted that MSNBC bosses were "basically pro-war during the war." The remark came in a larger discussion of top-down editorial control at the network — of which Matthews claimed there was none, citing the fact that many of his bosses supported Hillary Clinton while he has been very vocal for Obama.

His full statement, in response to a question whether MSNBC officially supports Obama (via Politico's Michael Calderone):

"Well, it's not official." (LAUGH) "Well, I don't think Joe Scarborough has. And I don't think Tucker Carlson did. And Keith does his thing. He does his thing--it's something and it's very successful. I do my thing. I don't think that's true. I think... my sense is that everybody that lives in New York is for Hillary. The people I work with--all my bosses--seem to be for Hillary. I just sense it. They don't actually say it, but there's no sense from the top I can tell you that it's pro-Obama.. by any means. That's not what I get. And it was basically pro-war during the war.. the bosses were. And I was up against that. And if there's anybody telling me to push Obama, I haven't heard it yet. And by the way, they're so fickle.... but there seems to be a New York thing about Hillary. Just the people from... it's like the Yankees and the Mets... it's their thing. You know? It's Hillary. You know? And I feel it. I find it. It's hard to figure sometimes. But I don't know who you are talking about. I know who you are talking about."

As revealed in the New York Times Magazine profile of Matthews by Mark Leibovich, Matthews idolizes NBC News Washington Bureau Chief Tim Russert like an older brother:

Tim -- as in Russert, the inquisitive jackhammer host of "Meet the Press" -- is a particular obsession of Matthews's. Matthews craves Russert's approval like that of an older brother. He is often solicitous.

In her new book Right is Wrong, Arianna Huffington critiques the media for being too compliant with administration policy during the run-up to war, and she particularly lays into Russert, saying, among other things, that he helped pump up the terrorist panic:

Take Tim Russert, whose July 1, 2007, Meet the Press interview with Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff was about as priapic a display as you're ever likely to see outside of a porno film or the monkey cage at the zoo, with Russert desperately trying to get Chertoff to pump up the panic meter...You could almost hear the blood rushing to his loins--and the palpable sense of deflation when Chertoff refused to stroke his fantasy

I can't imagine being a parent or spouse of someone lost in this War or in this War and watching these amoral men spew their crap knowing it is simply a job of personal grandizement. There are so few patriots that did or continue to do their job. When and if they ever get around to admitting their sins, it is said and passing and they are on to the next betrayal.

Remember when Meet The Press was a respected news program?

Russert is a blathering, goading dirigible, and Matthews has picked his role model accordingly.

When you add up the collective impact of these rodeo clowns and their media colleagues, it's no wonder the PNAC whackos and their handpuppet president have been free to loot the joint, bury the economy, kill hundreds of thousands of innocents and engender global hatred of the U.S.

I remember when "Meet the Press" was just that before it turned into "Meet Tim Russert & Then Russert Meets His Press".

Tools are there to use to do the job and the job of nbc's owners is the weapons business so you get your tool to clear the way to make more money.
None of these people would even have their jobs if they were honest and told what was really happening!

You know, I had respected Chris Mathews coverage throughout this primary, but he lost me this morning on Morning Joe. Mr. Mathews seems think this primary is somewhat of a cat and mouse game to him and suggests he would like this to continue on an on. It's now clear he has a personal agenda to create mischief.

For what gain Mr. Mathews? Your ratings? For your entertainment? For your job at MSNBC? So your party wins in November?

He would like to see the race continue to maintain the discussion about issues! When its all said and done, debating issues and making a decision based on those discussions is what makes this country great. The days of the "one-sided opinion" discussions are OVER!

"The days of the "one-sided opinion" discussions are OVER!"

Matthews talked about Rev.Wright everyday for the past two months. Do you call that "discussion about issues"?

"It's now clear he has a personal agenda to create mischief."

It was very clear two months ago.

"He would like to see the race continue to maintain the discussion about issues! " You're joking right? Matthews' discussion of the issues in this campaign have been nearly non-exisitent. He's whipped the Rev. Wright horse for several weeks, nearly non-stop and most of his other commentary has been of the who's up - who's down variety. He's a hack whose opinion changes with the political winds.

Matthews wants to run for the Senate in Philadelphia....ha ha ha...likely chance he would win

Likey chance is he can win in Pennsylvannia especially since Arlen Specter's cancer has returned and the state threw Rick Santorium to the curb in 2006. Governor Rendell will not be running for any office in the future, so why not Chris Matthews.

I said this in another comment, but on CNN a few weeks ago, Jesse Ventura stated that he signed a three-year deal as commentator on MSNBC, then told them that he was absolutely against the War in Iraq and was going to talk about it. Not suprisingly, MSNBC never put him on the air, and he collected his salary for the next three years doing absolutely nothing for them!

No surprise about Ventura. One Olberman is enough for them..and I suspect they only tolerate him because he has good ratings and provides a figleaf to cover their bias.
Mathews is speaking in code. Can you decipher it?
"... my sense is that everybody that lives in New York is for Hillary. The people I work with--all my bosses--seem to be for Hillary....And it was basically pro-war during the war.. the bosses were. And I was up against that.... but there seems to be a New York thing about Hillary. Just the people from... it's like the Yankees and the Mets... it's their thing. You know? It's Hillary. You know? And I feel it. I find it. It's hard to figure sometimes..."
The NBC New York bigwigs are mostly neo-cons and AIPAC supporters. The war was a crusade for them and Hillary fell in line with her vote for and support of it.
The Israel lobby (AIPAC) has also made it clear that they support Hillary first and McCain second but NOT OBAMA. That's why they've been trashing him incessantly with all the Wright stuff and that's why they are supportive of Hillary's attempt to make Obama unelectable.
What's that? Hillary will support the nominee? Nope. Her support will be pro forma --tokenism.

Of course the NBC New York bigwigs are neocons. Has Jack Donaghy not made that clear to you?

Yeah, Tweety, who almost wet his pants with love juice, verbally ejaculating when Chimpy descended from the skies in his flight suit about how women love a hero! He kinda leaves that part out how he was for the war before he was for the war.

Absolutely right and what's more disgusting is that, on the anniversary of Mission Accomplished", he was on the air excoriating the same Bushies he'd praised to the hilt at the time it happened.

That MSNBC execs were pro-war is no suprise. Look at what they did to Phil Donahue who, as far as I know, the only person with a daily show that expressed doubts about invading Iraq before the fact.

In light of Obama's victory today, I am in a forgiving mood. I will try and forget his continual whinnying "What about the Reverend Wright thing? Do you think Obama has put that behind him?" Yes Chris, in spite of you. To even suggest that you have been supportive of Barrack's candidacy is just laughable today. It was unforgivable when I thought that you and others might sink his candidacy of hope and unity. Please learn to talk less, listen more
