Mccain Primary

As the battle over Indiana progressed between Sens Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton late Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning, a set of depressing polls numbers were finalized for John McCain.

In the GOP primaries in North Carolina and Indiana, the basically uncontested Republican nominee did not gain more than 80 percent of the vote.

In Indiana, McCain earned the backing of 78 percent of Republican primary voters, with exited candidates Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney gaining 10 percent and five percent respectively. Congressman Ron Paul, who is still in the race, has received seven percent of the vote.

The numbers were even worse in North Carolina, where McCain won 74 percent of the vote, with Huckabee earning 12 percent, Paul earning seven percent, and four percent of Republican primary goers simply voting "no preference."

None of these totals, to be sure, will affect the Arizona Republican's almost certain path to the nomination. But it has been more than two months now since McCain became the presumptive GOP candidate, and in each state election since he achieved that measure he has continued to lose a relatively substantial chunk of Republican support. In Pennsylvania, for example, McCain won 73 percent of the vote, with Paul pulling in 16 and Huckabee 11.

The troubling figures, however, may be the popular vote totals - individuals who McCain will theoretically have to woo back into his good graces. In North Carolina more than 105,000 Republicans did not vote for McCain. And in Indiana, 85,000 voters - whether they were Republican, Democrat or Independent - cast their ballots for someone other than the Arizona Republican.

The totals reflect roughly 90+ percent of the totals reported in each state, and will likely change, but not by much.

Surely many of those motivated to vote in an uncontested GOP primary did so to make a statement of disatisfaction. So how is this relevant?

So the NC and IN Republican parties do not care who their nominee is for Governor, Lt Governer, Senator, Congressmen.....?

I was a McCain donor & supporter in 2000. He's turned in to a nutball. I wouldn't vote for the dude if he were the last man standing. He's completely turned is insides out. Frankly, the sight of his spleen sticking out of his shirt provides me no mean pleasure. His liver ... the same thing.

He suffers from partial Cheney's Disease (look it up).

Republican voters basically stayed home last night. McCain is the nominee so what was the motivation to go vote? McCain won overwhelmingly in states like Ohio etc when there was still and actual race. This is kind of a non-story.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:59 AM on 05/07/2008

i agree with the non-story comment. actually it's a not not not not not a story.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:08 PM on 05/07/2008

Sure it is a story, there is so much talk of unrest within the Democratic party when they are having record turnout at the polls. And John McCain as, the presumptive Republican nominee, cannot net more than 75% (75% of a small number mind you) and there isn't much talk at all of a split Republican party, or what will happen come Convention time for the GOP. I think it is a very important story, and if I were a member of the Republican party I would have a worried look on my face while reading it.

it shows republicans are not as excited about the process this year. it's definitely a story.

Story? Non-STory? Since when is that a criterion on a blog site? Anyway, it can't be entirely a non-story because as I was briefly visiting Fox last night (boy, are they a bunch of tired white guys), guess what subject came up? McCain's inability to get beyond 75% in Republican primaries. So, if they're still mentioning it, guess it's kind of a......story. I think they're a little worried about that old thing called "turnout" (as will the Dems in November), what with the wacko Evangelicas (Huckabee) and those almost wacko Paulists (some of whom I think will vote Dem, but most will vote Libertarian..).

Poor John, he looks like Pete Seger at a Kiss concert? He's so out-of-step with the country's needs that 78% in N.C., was a good showing, for a man with NO-PULSE.

Pete Seeger you mean. Good god, I have a friend who used to open for acts like Jonathan Winters, the Weavers, etc., at the Hungry i in San Francisco many years ago.

How about Wayne Newton at a Butthole Surfers concert? Or Yanni (Yawnni!) at a Sonic Youth concert?

Now that the media focus will be more on McCain and Obama I suspect McCain nationals polls to drop as well. The dem's and independents who felt McCan was an option are going to soon see why still many republicans are not on the straight talk express. The free media ride is coming to an end Mr. McCain!

70% in North Carolina and 74% in Indiana is pretty embarassing! Oh wait, that's what Al Gore received in those two states when he was the only candidate in 2000. Sorry!

I guess Mr. Stein isn't too keen on electoral history, even recent history. After Sen. Kerry secured the nomination in early March of 2004, he received a little more than 70% of the votes in the remaining primaries. In Alaska he didn't even receive 50%. If Mr. Stein believes Republicans will desert Sen McCain in the fall, he's just whistling Dixie. The people he should be keeping an eye on are the poor clinging white folks who have nothing to identify with in Sen. Obama.

But! But! You gots' to remember that North Carolina was where Johnny "BOMB!!BOMB! " McCain and Karla Rove begat a bi-racial child! Don't you remember? FAUX News ran the story for months! So! It must be true! Right? Oh! The Shame! The Shame!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:02 PM on 05/07/2008

Uhm, that was SOUTH Carolina. Different state. Primary held months in advance of North Carolina. Early enough in the primary race to kill McCain in 2000. Yet STILL Rove is advising McCain in 2008. Oooooh, my skin just crawled.

The guy has a lot of problem that has not been discussed in the media. McCain is WEAK candidate! I think the Republican Party should have another candidate represent them in a different ticket. We need a better republican candidate to match up with our guy Obama. NOT an extension of Bush. Just wait till the next few months, the polls will show Obama beating McCain by 15-20 points. You will see!!

That's a new one. The simpler explanation is more likely - the nutjob fundamentalists and libertarians in the GOP still don't like McCain.

i will vote Huckabee on June 3 although I'm not pleased that he has been supporting McCain. He or Ron Paul are still the best possible candidates. Chuck Baldwin of the Constitution Party (newly nominated) is standing on almost all of Ron Paul's issues and still praising Paul.

I appreciate this article, which tells me that some voters still refuse to be totally snowed.
