Multilateral McCain? Called Europeans "Our Adversaries," "Vacuous And Pandering"

In March 26th, John McCain gave a much-hyped foreign policy speech at the World Affairs Council in Los Angeles. It was his way of signaling both his commitment to restoring America's alliances and his desire to separate himself from the diplomatic blunders of the Bush administration. And it went over like gangbusters. David Broder, dean of the Washington pundit class, gushingly proclaimed the speech was "an implicit rebuke to the mind-set of the current White House" and went so far as to equate it with Barack Obama's speech on race.

"We need to listen to the views and respect the collective will of our democratic allies," McCain said, in an echo of George Bush's 2000 campaign promise to play nice with our friends. "If we're an arrogant nation," Bush said at the time, "they'll resent us; if we're a humble nation, but strong, they'll welcome us." And we all know how that turned out.

Only a press corps so enamored with McCain could imagine that one of the staunchest supporters of the Iraq War would be capable of breaking with the current administration's unilateral adventurism. Despite his conciliatory rhetoric, McCain's hawkish views, and his long history of castigating allies who do not agree with him, leave little reason to believe that when it comes to restoring America's image, credibility, and alliances, he would be much different than George W. Bush. A brief look at these four crucial policy areas explains why.

1. NATO and our democratic allies. Perhaps the greatest window into McCain's ability to deal with America's allies comes from his handling of the rupture that occurred within NATO prior to the start of the Iraq War. The debate over whether to invade was, after all, the greatest diplomatic crisis that America's most critical alliance had faced in its 60 years.

On this front, his record is not good. In fact, some of McCain's statements made those from Donald "Old Europe" Rumsfeld seem tame by comparison. Speaking at an international security conference in Germany a month before the war, a frustrated McCain lashed out at our European allies, calling them "vacuous and posturing." Later that year, in an interview, he referred to the French and Germans as "our adversaries." He said that former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder "looks little like the ally that anchored our presence in Europe throughout the Cold War. ... A German Rip Van Winkle from the 1960s would not understand the lack of political courage and cooperation with its allies on the question of Iraq exhibited in Berlin today." McCain also unleashed on two other critical players, accusing France and Russia of putting their "commercial interests above international law, world peace, and the political ideals of Western civilization."

Why on God's green earth would anyone vote for this man or any GOP candidate unless you were wealthy, not rich wealthy? Please explain!

Well, if anyone knows "vacuous and posturing" it is McCain. Those words describe him perfectly. The Europeans were right to refuse to help in the invasion of Iraq. Too bad more "politicians" in this country did not take a stronger stand against Cheney/Bush. The country would not be in the mess we are in now.

Germany and France received a head of state which is very suspicious. West Germans would
not have voted for an East German (Merkel) and Sarkozy won probably with the help of our CIA,
who spends millions in other countries to get what the US likes. No wonder they will cooperate
with the USA every time. Look at South America, 2 failed coups in Venezuela and the majority of
people love Chavez. All socialists won in South America why would Europe be any different?

Translation from wingnut speak:

"Jimmy Carter re-tread" = somebody who doesn't want to launch a full scale nuclear attack on Iran. Tomorrow if not sooner.

Buckeye59 you sound like someone scared to die. So why is it okay if we can kill others around the world. Come on now peace is the process of healing. Israel can fight for themselves. Our military is stretched very thin. This is my brother's fourth duty in Iraq and my cousin's second. So if you are soo worried join the military and if you are already in the military I truly know you know what it is like to see dead innocent people. I hear about it all the time via family in the military.
I guess it will take a draft to get some of you war lovers to wake up!

"If Obama is elected,Iran will have nukes and they will use them against us and Israel."

Really? How would Iran get their nukes (plural, I assume, as the Iranians, according to you, will need 2) delivered to the US. FedEx, UPS or DHL. Probably DHL as it's owned by the German postal service, and we know what kind of scoundrels them Germans are - all liars, and commies.
So when do think the Iranians will have their nukes (plural, I assume) ready for delivery? 5 years, 10 years, 50 years (Bush), 100 years (Mcbush)??
I bet them Iranian don't know that the Israeli's have more than 200 nukes (plural, I assume). Wow, I guess them Iranian know how to neutralize them 200 Israeli nukes (plural, I assume). Must have gotten that knowledge off the internets (Bush). Or from the tubes (Alaska Senator Stevens).

Mosy on over to www.chickenhawksunited.coop. You'll love it over there.

Kristol got one of his three wishes....1. invade Iraq, 2. Invade Iran and 3. Invade Syria!
Well we have seen the results of #1....4,000+ American Heroes dead, over 20,000 seriously wounded, the military suicides may outnumber the actual casualties. The 2-3 Trillion dollar cost will make BinLaden's plan come through of bankrupting America. And, oh, by the way...crude at $125 and gas at $4.00 a gal.

If Kristol gets his second wish...Bush may do it before he leaves office, McCain may bomb-bomb-bomb Iran and HRC may obliterate Iran....CRUDE at $400- $500 a barrel and gas at $15 a gallon.
Is America ready for further disasters? Sabre rattling and threats have really worked. Just look at the
Pentagon's recent report on terrorism.....up 10-20 and almost 50% in the past three years. Safer my butt!! We need a new direction, and I am a Republican who will vote for Obama.

Yeah. And while people are calling the Europeans chickensh*t, their Euro now outweighs our dollar 2 to 1.

Uhm... somehow I don't think they're feeling very insulted right now.

"their Euro now outweighs our dollar 2 to 1." Not quite, buzardbreath. Today's exchange rate is $1.54 per Euro. The dollar has, in fact, gained considerable strength against all major currencies in the last 2 weeks (for example, the Euro was over $1.60 2 weeks ago). However, a strengthened dollar could hurt US exports, which, btw, have increased by 23% year over year. US exports mean US jobs. US imports mean fewer high-paying US jobs.

The Bush dollar has lost nearly 50% since 2001. The trade deficit is still huge 7 years later. Even if the dollar dropped to .25 cents imports would top exports in deflated dollars. Increasing exports by currency devaluation is a lose/lose proposition for 95% of the population. It's a third world economic plan implemented by a Bush League President.

I personally feel that once the democrats quit using each other for chew toys (mostly Hillary's fault),
they'll make mincemeat of this doddering old warmongering fool.

What? This is a fine example of why the party has got to pull together. If all you were doing was voting for the first woman or first black president, and you're not going to get your wish one way or the other (and I'm looking at you, Clinton supporters), this is EXACTLY why you've got to vote for a Democrat. Europe is one of the US's only friends at this point, even after all the Bushies have done. Russia doesn't trust us, China abuses us AND doesn't trust us, we've messed up the Middle East, Africa, and South America so bad that they're pissed at us as well. Why McCain would take a confrontational tone against Europe is completely mindless...especially considering he figures to fight more wars. One of the major reasons our troops are being redeployed infinitely is because we've got no coalition anymore. When we are working in conjunction with the rest of the world, we don't HAVE to redeploy our troops 5 times over. This shows a fundamental stupidity in regards to foreign policy on the part of the McCain campaign that even exceeds the ignorance of the Bush administration.

I don't see how McCain can hold his base with words like "vacuous and posturing."

I know. It is sad how the news media keeps describing the people who are voting for Clinton. They say whites who are uneducated. Translation "rednecks." Clinton gets seniors, women, and uneducated whites while Obama gets blacks, which is the Clintons' fault, upper-class whites, and people under 50.

"McCain also unleashed on two other critical players, accusing France and Russia of putting their 'commercial interests above international law, world peace, and the political ideals of Western civilization.'"

Now, where have we seen this sort of national behavior before?

Want more of this duplicity, hypocrisy and total insanity? Just vote Republican.
