Senior Clinton Aide: "It's Going To Be Tough For Us... We Lost This Thing In February"

The Washington Post picks up some damning comments from a senior Clinton aide on Hillary's dwindling chances:

"Absent some sort of miracle on May 31st, it's going to be tough for us," said a senior Clinton official who spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to be frank. "We lost this thing in February. We're doing everything we can now . . . but it's just an uphill battle."

As voters went to the polls yesterday, Clinton tried to recast the terms of the race, telling reporters that the number of delegates needed to win is "2,209," rather than the 2,025 needed without Michigan and Florida.

"There are going to be the rest of these contests, which are very significant, and then in June, if we haven't done it already, we're going to have to resolve Florida and Michigan," she told reporters during a daytime event at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. "They were legitimate elections."

It's just speculation, but I'm confident in speculating that one major reason Clinton and co. went along with the earlier decision not to accept the MI and FL primaries was their overconfident assumption that they wouldn't need them--that they'd have the nomination clinched early and easy. So, maybe they're the ones who didn't think MI and FL would truly matter, because they didn't think Obama would matter.

Now that they're on the verge of not mattering, they want to change the rules when the game's almost over. But you can't blame them completely. I mean, we're in a country where people continue to believe Bush/Cheney lies. So it's not surprising that HRC and co. could believe that millions of people wouldn't give a shit about this blatant ploy to steal the nomination, or, even worse, to contaminate Obama's nomination by, let's say, portraying him as the Democrat's version of what Bush was in FL in 2000.

No one in their right mind is going to allow her to just seat Michigan as is, Obama wasnt on the ballot!! Does she really want to win this thing by cheating? She agreed to discount those votes, she cant change the rules now. (Although even if she did Obama still has the lead.) She has simply been leveraging her position as best she could to eventually blackmail the DNC and/or the Obama Campaign for the maximum power she can try to steal. I think that the issue is that the Florida and Michigan contests were not legitimate, as far as the DNC is concerned. And Clinton and Obama both pledged not to be complicit in breaking the rules by not actively campaigning in these states. Clinton is so desperate that she is willing to break a plege/promise even before she is even the nominee! Sad.
