Update: Barbara's rep has responded to Star's war of words, telling UsMagazine.com, ""I will not dignify this with a comment. Barbara's written words say it all!"

Original Post: In her new book, Audition, Barbara Walters opens up about Star Jones, saying she lied to protect Star's secret about her gastric bypass and that Star became a bridezilla as her wedding to Al Reynolds approached.

"She was clinically obese," Barbara said of Star on Oprah yesterday (video below). "She could barely walk onto the set." But when Star chose to keep her gastric bypass operation secret, Barbara claimed "The View" co-hosts "had to then lie on the set everyday, because she said it was portion control and pilates."

Barbara also claimed that Star "wanted the biggest extravaganza wedding — she wanted to be a princess" and that she wanted to promote her wedding to get things paid for.

Today, in an exclusive statement to UsMagazine.com, Star Jones is hitting back, slamming Barbara as an adulteress in the "sunset of her life." Her full statement:

It is a sad day when an icon like Barbara Walters, in the sunset of her life, is reduced to publicly branding herself as an adulterer, humiliating an innocent family with accounts of her illicit affair and speaking negatively against me all for the sake of selling a book," Jones told Us. "It speaks to her true character."

Watch Barbara discuss Star on Oprah yesterday:

From ABC, 5/6

In the book, Barbara also comes out publicly for the first time about her 1970s affair with married Senator Edward Brooke.

Hooray for BW for being a role model for all of us in the "sunset" of our lives as Star Bones puts it. Wonder what Star Bones will be doing in the "sunset: of her life...hmmm? Fighting with a Bro' on the "down low"? Or just straight lace washed up!? Shut up Star! We ain't buying it. BW gave you an opportunity that many 'Liz Hasselbacks would die for and you blew it. Wonder what book readers would say about you if you actually told the truth about yourself....Hmmmm? And you don't even realise that while you're huffing and puffing on BW's book you're making me want to go out and buy it. I don't own any of your books, and it's not because I can't though. I'm glad they kicked you off the view. You are not representing Black Women. We don't all think that crazy phoney stuff you think. Good bye Black chick. And stop using Bw to keep your name and "loooking like a bug" face in the media.

Americans are the most shameless humans on earth!

It's amazing how the rich never have enough money. Barbara Walters is shamelessly victimizing the wife of her co-adulterer (a second time) by publicly humiliating her. Like Geraldo Rivera when he humiliated Bette Midler in his book, Walters is disgusting. Way back when, she used to have some dignity, Now she's no better than those actors who dig into their family closets for some publicity generating secret in hopes of reviving their careers.

I'm glad Barbara wrote a candid book. Her story shows how are we've all comes. As for Star Jones, her life and career are never going to improve until she owns some of her history. She destroyed her career with her unwillingess to be honest and with her greedy wedding fiasco, but continues to blame others for her downfall. She has to either own that, and stop blaming others, or simply retire from public life. Get over it, Star!

Star Jones is a self-serving opportunist. Her opinion doesn't make a particle of difference to me. Go back to obscurity where you belong, Star.

Now Baba Wawa is concerned with dignity, huh?

She's beyond parody.

Beyond Journalistic integrity, isn't there some degree of illegal payola Jones was engaging in by name dropping to get free stuff?

I feel sorry for Star. I didn't even know who she was unil a couple of years ago. I don't watch daytime TV. Nor, do I read gossip columns. But, for her to come out and say that about BW.......shows how truly desperate she is. What kind of person lies about being treated for obesity? Who cares if she had surgery (the easy way to treat compulsive overeating)? I wonder how she deals with her compulsion to shove food in now? That's got to be one miserable woman.......fat or skinny!

replyReply favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:48 AM on 05/08/2008

You're still fat and talentless on the inside, Star.

Even though Barbara wrote about her affair, it's still her business. To each his (her) own.

"Even though Barbara wrote about her affair, it's still her business. To each his (her) own."

Ummm...wow...it unfortuntaely became public business when she decided to broadcast it. She is a shameless, money-grubbing, hypocritical hack.

She knew that he "affair" with Brooks would be the attention getter for her book. She could have respected the right of privacy for his family, but she was more interested in the money.

She is shameless. i can't believe there are people defending this idiot.

I can't believe BW. She couldn't right a book without embarrassing others?

replyReply favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:14 AM on 05/08/2008

I give BW credit for being a wonderful interviewer and for blazing the trail for women in broadcasting, but I must say all the attention her book is receiving is overblown.

I watched both the Oprah and Charlie Gibson interviews and was touched by some of the experiences that Barbara recounted, but I cringed when she talked about Star and named the men in her life. This was sensationalism at best, and I wonder why she feels the need to bare her soul by embarrassing others. I won't buy the book.

Everything Babbs said about Star is true. She was a bridezilla who married a obviously gay man.

Unfortunately, what Star said about Babbs is also true as well. I thought from the beginning that this 'confessional' was tasteless and trashy and beneath Ms. Walters. She definitely went down in my estimation of her.

replyReply favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:45 AM on 05/08/2008

I am very DISAPPOINTED that Ms. Walters and (h)Oprah denigrated the institution of marriage and shamed families all to CAT it up that throwing their legs up in in the bed of married men was OKAY as long as they paid for their share of breakfast following it. BOTH HAVE BECOME EGOTISTICAL MONSTERS and the public should not applaud their whoring ways.

Right On!

replyReply favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:02 AM on 05/08/2008

At her age, and her years of experience, Barbara is entitled to write her memoirs, and even make some money out of it. What Barbara said about Star was true. She did turn her wedding into a joke, when she went hat in hand for freebies. You cannot put on a grand show, with borrowed props, and commercializing the event. It shows no class. Jones also lied to the public about how she lost weight.
They had an expert talk about it one day, and Jones kept mum about her surgery.
Star using words like adulterer etc., is totally unnecessary. Perhaps her much predicted divorce and loss of job, must be making her a skinny, bitter, person. This is one class-less star.

I think it is pretty pathetic that Bawa Wawa decided that she needed to tell people about her affairs from 30 years ago. She had an amazing career as a journalist. That should be what her book should be about. Is she that driven by greed and the need for fame? Star is right on this one.

replyReply favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:29 AM on 05/08/2008

i am shocked schocked! to find out these people are nothing more then ho's and worried only about themselves.

Jealous??? Don't be a hater because you didn't write a book about screwing someone else's husband, keeping the secret of an overweight cohost, how you were not given admission to the good ole boy's club and make millions, and millions of dollars talking about your life on Oprah and every news channel in the country. Sounds like Barbara is living the American dream...go Barbara. I am not mad at you!!!!

Excuse my ignorance, but who the hell is Star Jones? Is that a real name? Was she was blimpy fat loud mouth on that gossipy ladies show? What happened, did she go on the Whitney Houston crack diet?

It would have been if that old bag BW would have started it again.

A couple of questions that come to mind. First, where were the network folks when Jones was shamelessly name dropping on the air to get her dress up day which posed as a wedding underwritten and endorsed? It might not have come under Standards and Practices or under her contract, but no one can tell me that Bill Geddie or Ms. Walters, as the producers of the show weren't aware of the appearance of impropriety here. While it might pass the test by industry standards, it certainly doesn't pass the smell test.

Speaking of journalistic integrity, something that I've not heard about is whether or not Ms. Walters was dating Sen. Brook when she interviewed him back in the 1970's? That definitely begs the question of journalistic integrity. For such a fascinating life, why would someone include something so salacious as what can be described as nothing more than an afterthought.

If someone has the opportunity and luxury to spend 600 pages on what is basically their epitaph, why would you clutter-up your tombstone with these six pages? If it is an attempt to be hip, cool and more adept at sleeping around than Spitzer, Vitters, Craig or Clinton, it missed the mark.

Star has her pristine bloomers in a bunch over the fact that Baba had sex with a married man. She's pissed because she was a bride for over a year and can't say the same thing.
