WCBS-TV, New York's CBS affiliate station, has canceled a pre-Tony Awards performance of a song called "We Just Had Sex" from the musical "Passing Strange."

Variety reports that a CBS rep deemed the song "inappropriate" for a 7 p.m. audience:

In a statement, a WCBS spokesman said station execs felt "the lyrics in the song offered by the musical's producers are inappropriate for broadcast television, especially for a 7 p.m. audience, when children are watching.

So what are these inappropriate "We Just Had Sex" lyrics?

"We just had sex. There's nothing sleazy 'bout a natural reflex. It's nice and easy. No need to crane your necks. It's all cool and breezy, baby. What's a little bedroom traffic? Evening News is more pornographic!"

Page Six reports that producer Oskar Eustis will protest the censorship, but Variety claims Eustis has been told there is no recourse.

Um...how many kids are going to watch the Tony awards pre show? Those crazy kids today can't get enough of those theater awards shows! I think self censoring would have taken care of this dilemma.

Yes god forbid there is any mention of sex - now go play your violent video game about shooting and killing people while I make dinner.

Er ... I gotta agree with the Network on this one. I may be a Liberal but I also know that young kids are watching at 7pm. (And spare me the 'they see much worse on MTV' schtick). If we think kids are growing up too fast then we have to draw a line.

I know!!!! God forbid these kids hear a song that claims sex is natural. And it's not that they see much worse on MTV that annoys me, it's that the news programs that preceded this show were undoubtably rife with violence and sex that should be more offensive to our sensibilities than a song (just as the song says by the way). Furthermore, awards shows are excruciatingly boring, especially the Tony's, and if you think kids sit around and watch that shit you are sadly out of touch with your own inner child.

Peace

c'mon, i'm as liberal as they come. i'm a writer and i've written things that are sexual in nature, etc. i don't believe in censorship either. but cbs has a right to decide that 7 pm is too early to be putting up sexually explicit stuff on for a general audience. and by they way, what ever happened to subtlety? "we just had sex?" how about, "i just came?"

Hooray for CBS. It's swell to have coarse adult themes in the theater, but not on a TV awards show. There are lots of natural impulses and body functions that are fine in the appropriate context but scuzzy when put on TV in the early evening.
