NEW YORK — A journalism think tank studying "The Daily Show" doesn't believe many people get their news from Jon Stewart _ because otherwise they wouldn't get the jokes.

The Project for Excellence in Journalism also said it was surprised at how much the Comedy Central late-night program resembles "The O'Reilly Factor," "Hardball" and other cable news shows in content.

The Washington-based organization asked its researchers to study a year's worth of "The Daily Show" tapes _ hardly a grim assignment _ after hearing the frequent claim that many young people learn about the world from Stewart instead of more traditional news sources.

Tom Rosenstiel, the project's director, said he doubts this is the case. He considers "The Daily Show" more of a political satire in the tradition of newspapermen like Art Buchwald, H.L. Mencken and Russell Baker.

"They're not making jokes about Dan Quayle is dumb or Gerald Ford is clumsy," he said. "They're not making jokes that you could get if you live in the country but don't read the news ... . You can't get the jokes if you're not watching the news. The jokes are designed to make you think more about the news."

A Comedy Central representative had no immediate comment on the study. Stewart has consistently ridiculed the idea that he's somehow a newsman, saying he's just a comic.

Politics, government and the Bush administration's policies in Iraq accounted for about half of the show's content, making it quite similar to the focus of serious cable news shows, the study said. About 8 percent of the show's time is spent looking at the behavior of the press.

The show is actually making some very serious political commentary, "but they use humor to do it," Rosenstiel said.

With some stories in no way conducive to humor, "The Daily Show" ignores certain big events. The Minnesota bridge collapse wasn't mentioned on the show, and the Virginia Tech massacre was largely ignored, the study said.

And, of course, sometimes the news gives way to pure comedy. On a January day when traditional newscasts led with severe winter weather gripping much of the country, "Stewart began his show by pondering what drink would be best to wash down a Jimmy Dean pancake and sausage on a stick," the study said.

The verdict: Gatorade.

While Stewart aims most of his firepower at Republicans, the show is actually pretty balanced in its bookings, the study noted. Of the clearly partisan, 15 guests were conservative and 18 were liberal. Presumptive GOP presidential nominee John McCain was a guest on Wednesday's show.

"The fact that the lineup of guests is actually even surprised me," Rosenstiel said. "I thought going in that there weren't that many Republicans who would be willing to go on the show."

What knuckleheads funded this study? The Center for Obvious Conclusions About the Media? Next up on their roster: "Is 'reality TV' really real?"

What's great about Daily Show and Colbert is; they are totally immune to Strauss-inspired propaganda attacks. Rove and the Reagan-ite propaganda brain-trust have nothing to hit them back with.

The era of Right-wing dominance of information is over, someone better tell NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, WSJ so that they don't continue to make fools of themselves

That's right! We'd better send them an email right away and let them know they're all done!

People don't watch the cable news channels to be "in the know" about poltiical events. I've tried, but I can't wade through the endless coverage of Brittney Spears' later meltdown or whatever missing rich white girl they're obsessed with that week to actually get any political news from the cable channels.

"Study: "Daily Show" Very Similar To "O'Reilly Factor"

Study: Skittles very similar to brocolli.

It's ironic that they call these propaganda cults "Think Tanks"

I think I can agree with that study. The Daily Show is a comedy show. The O'Reilly Factor is a total joke.

See? There are similarities.

If HuffPo is going to post content from the Onion, they should really give credit to the source.

John Stewart does SATIRE. Satire is one of the most subtle and intelligent forms of social commentary. There is nothing subtle or intelligent abour Bill Orally. The fact that this alleged "study" would find the light of day in HuffPo is disturbing. I've noticed many disturbing entries in recent months.

The Daily show is a comedy show that pushes a viewpoint that can make fun of someone of something. It is a show in the great tradition of stand-up comedy which does have relevancy but that is not the point. Stewart's humor is cutting and spot on in many cases, so, I appreciate it but it's not indepth. For that you go to journals and online, if you prefer, commentary reports by scholars like Chalmers Johnson. O'Reilly attempts to be serious about subjects while pushing right-wing-nut talking points for the purpose of influencing peoples opinions at the behest of an elite corporate oligarchy that owns his station. That's it.

Thank you so much for explaining that.

Please go on and explain how although the majority of folks looking to get straight news go to FOX but that is only because they are brainwashed ditto-heads, that are unable to think for themselves and how you and those on the far left are really the only truly intelligent people in America and the only one's who see things the way they really are and everyone else is crazy and/or stupid except for you and you can prove it by all the cool ways you can come up with to spell conservative names in naughty ways and....

In the interest of fairness let's put your claim that the majority of folks go to Fox News in perspective. In fact, the majority of folks go to broadcast news. 30 to 1 over fox and the other cable outlets.

Winning a cable ratings race doesn't make Fox more accurate or truthful.

It has already been explained in a PIPA media study that found Fox viewers the most uninformed citizens.

The thing most people forget about these comedy shows is that they don't just satire one party over another, they take aim at whoever is in power. That is the source of their material. I just hope all those nut jobs who think that Stewart and Colbert are merely partisan drones will stay tuned when the democrats control the White House.

Comedy is the last line of defense against an incapable government.

But the problem is: Democrats are just not nearly as funny as Republicans. At least the crew of fools that have been running things for the past 7 years. More if you want to include Newt and Company.

But if you have been paying attention to both Stewart and Colbert their comedy is tinged with bitterness at the stupidity present in the policies of Bush/Cheney and the incredible lameness of American media.

When the Dem's get into power and become very boring, sometime around year 3 of the Obama Administration the DS and CR will have plenty of fun to make of the ridiculously lame American media.

LOL, very true. They don't have much to do that is why they carried out this study, whose conclusions, as others here have pointed out, anybody with even a hint of common sense already knows.

It's a false conclusion to presume we watch the other news just because we're politically "in the know" to understand the jokes on the Daily Show. The "other" news networks hardly spend enough time on actual news for us to be so informed if we weren't getting our news from the non-MSM sources.

And we've been saying all along that the reason we ONLY watch the Daily Show (out of television "news" shows, not as our only news source) is because it's the only thing out there that's even remotely balanced and unbiased--or, rather, so incredibly biased against everything that it all evens out in the end. Which is far better at informing us than petty politically-limited "news" shows far less pertinent, intelligent, and real.

"Politics, government and the Bush administration's policies in Iraq accounted for about half of the show's content, making it quite similar to the focus of serious cable news shows"

Ya right, so-called "serious cable news shows" focus on Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears, and Paris Hilton. The Daily Show has more news in its little 30 minute comedy side show than "serious news networks" have all day long.

I believe that people who watch Stewart and Colbert know more about the world they live in than people who watch Fox and CNN 24/7 put together.

Jon Stewart is just a little fake. If you want true comedy and true sincerity, get George Carlin.

I might just get George Carlin. Or Jeff Foxworthy, or.............
