NEW YORK — A journalism think tank studying "The Daily Show" doesn't believe many people get their news from Jon Stewart _ because otherwise they wouldn't get the jokes.

The Project for Excellence in Journalism also said it was surprised at how much the Comedy Central late-night program resembles "The O'Reilly Factor," "Hardball" and other cable news shows in content.

The Washington-based organization asked its researchers to study a year's worth of "The Daily Show" tapes _ hardly a grim assignment _ after hearing the frequent claim that many young people learn about the world from Stewart instead of more traditional news sources.

Tom Rosenstiel, the project's director, said he doubts this is the case. He considers "The Daily Show" more of a political satire in the tradition of newspapermen like Art Buchwald, H.L. Mencken and Russell Baker.

"They're not making jokes about Dan Quayle is dumb or Gerald Ford is clumsy," he said. "They're not making jokes that you could get if you live in the country but don't read the news ... . You can't get the jokes if you're not watching the news. The jokes are designed to make you think more about the news."

A Comedy Central representative had no immediate comment on the study. Stewart has consistently ridiculed the idea that he's somehow a newsman, saying he's just a comic.

Politics, government and the Bush administration's policies in Iraq accounted for about half of the show's content, making it quite similar to the focus of serious cable news shows, the study said. About 8 percent of the show's time is spent looking at the behavior of the press.

The show is actually making some very serious political commentary, "but they use humor to do it," Rosenstiel said.

With some stories in no way conducive to humor, "The Daily Show" ignores certain big events. The Minnesota bridge collapse wasn't mentioned on the show, and the Virginia Tech massacre was largely ignored, the study said.

And, of course, sometimes the news gives way to pure comedy. On a January day when traditional newscasts led with severe winter weather gripping much of the country, "Stewart began his show by pondering what drink would be best to wash down a Jimmy Dean pancake and sausage on a stick," the study said.

The verdict: Gatorade.

While Stewart aims most of his firepower at Republicans, the show is actually pretty balanced in its bookings, the study noted. Of the clearly partisan, 15 guests were conservative and 18 were liberal. Presumptive GOP presidential nominee John McCain was a guest on Wednesday's show.

"The fact that the lineup of guests is actually even surprised me," Rosenstiel said. "I thought going in that there weren't that many Republicans who would be willing to go on the show."

In a nod to Futurama, all I can say is "BUH!".

The Daily Show is a parody of the mainstream corporate media's so-called "news" programs. Therefore by it's very definition it takes the content of straight news programs, tweaks it and presents it to the public in a comedy format. Of course a show parodying the content of regular news programs is going to present the same information - that's the whole point. My God, the more I hear from these overpaid so-called elitist egg-heads, the more I think that maybe I'm not as dumb as I think I am.

Huh? ... Am I missing something here? ....

This 'journalism think tank' concludes Daily Show is excellent political satire? ...

The observations and analysis of this 'think tank' seems to be nothing more than what viewers are already aware of, no? ...

This study seems like it was a ridiculous waste of time and their conclusion/s were common sense.

Political satire is a legitimate arena for true comedy. If there is a secondary effect of an informed electorate - that doesn't make it a"news" program - but call it what you want.

It is worthwhile to emphasize that the true differences between an "O'Lielly Factor" and a Daily Show segment are consistently as follows . . . .

** The Daily show deals with facts and is genuinely funny.

** Neither is true of the O'Lielly Factor.

nonsense.

I can tell you've never watched O'Reilly. Most liberals haven't, they just believe everything Al Franken tells them about it.

I watch both. They're remarkably similar, (although Daily is skewed to a much younger audience). It never ceases to amuse me, how much liberals limit their information sources to exclusively Left leaning sources, yet consider themselves well informed.

Thats because they ARE well enough informed to know that right wing sources have no truth, but lies and propaganda...and its impossible to glean any information from them, just endless talking points.

Fool me once...shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. We just don't want to waste that kind of time.

If you can't tell the difference between Stewart and Orally, you have my deepest sympathy.

So the study proves Jon Stewart is a comedian? That's money well spent.

I think the past studies actually demonstrate is that watchers of his show are simply better informed, not that they get their news from the Daily Show.

I doubt if actual fans of the show had anything to do with the study. It is more likely the predatory propagandists who are trying to figure out which news sources they are going to have to infiltrate and corrupt -- basically a cost benefit analysis about the cheapest way to destroy independent media and crush all enemies of lies and propaganda.

The Daily Show is the only TV news they watch. The viewers read a great deal, much more than The Factor fans.

You guys really, REALLY need to get hold of somebody who can write a headline. I'm getting sick and tired of being misled. The shows mentioned in the headline were identified as covering the same news stories. That's not even vaguely the same as saying the shows themselves are similar. Are a Chihuahua and a Great Dane "very similar" because they have most of the same genes? Please get rid of the jackass who keeps doing this. I can't believe there's more than one person on your staff so dedicated to the spread of misinformation.

I'd wonder who financed this study? Sumner Redstone? GE?

Someday our MSM may finally realize we don't believe them anymore. No wonder why newspaper sales are falling but they won't ever admit that themselves.

And it goes beyond the fact that they mislead and omit important news.

I stopped getting the POS Chicago Tribune years ago. I simply got tired of being force-fed Re-PIG-lic propaganda every single day. When they replaced Mike Royko with Cass I finally decided I couldn't handle it any more. Never been sorry - haven't missed it even a day.

And PAY for the privilege of being propagandized? I don't think so.

The Factor Show is a lot funnier than Stewart's show. O'Rly is a comic god with that deadpan moron character he plays. Sure, he stole a lot of it from Archie Bunker, but he's tweaked it enough and put it into the "news" commentary setting. I love when he turns off the other person's mike. Comic genius, I tell ya. Colbert should give 9/10ths of his salary to O'Rly. Maybe 11/10ths.

They actually paid people to figure this out????

AP apparently wrote the headline. Which is typical.

The headline is comically absurd. Not to say it's funny though. But it's a shame the Daily Show won't be on till Monday. I'm sure they could have fun with it.

Who ever it is, STOP IT, YOU BOTTOM-FEEDIN', MOUTH BREATHIN' AMATEUR!
