NEW YORK — A journalism think tank studying "The Daily Show" doesn't believe many people get their news from Jon Stewart _ because otherwise they wouldn't get the jokes.

The Project for Excellence in Journalism also said it was surprised at how much the Comedy Central late-night program resembles "The O'Reilly Factor," "Hardball" and other cable news shows in content.

The Washington-based organization asked its researchers to study a year's worth of "The Daily Show" tapes _ hardly a grim assignment _ after hearing the frequent claim that many young people learn about the world from Stewart instead of more traditional news sources.

Tom Rosenstiel, the project's director, said he doubts this is the case. He considers "The Daily Show" more of a political satire in the tradition of newspapermen like Art Buchwald, H.L. Mencken and Russell Baker.

"They're not making jokes about Dan Quayle is dumb or Gerald Ford is clumsy," he said. "They're not making jokes that you could get if you live in the country but don't read the news ... . You can't get the jokes if you're not watching the news. The jokes are designed to make you think more about the news."

A Comedy Central representative had no immediate comment on the study. Stewart has consistently ridiculed the idea that he's somehow a newsman, saying he's just a comic.

Politics, government and the Bush administration's policies in Iraq accounted for about half of the show's content, making it quite similar to the focus of serious cable news shows, the study said. About 8 percent of the show's time is spent looking at the behavior of the press.

The show is actually making some very serious political commentary, "but they use humor to do it," Rosenstiel said.

With some stories in no way conducive to humor, "The Daily Show" ignores certain big events. The Minnesota bridge collapse wasn't mentioned on the show, and the Virginia Tech massacre was largely ignored, the study said.

And, of course, sometimes the news gives way to pure comedy. On a January day when traditional newscasts led with severe winter weather gripping much of the country, "Stewart began his show by pondering what drink would be best to wash down a Jimmy Dean pancake and sausage on a stick," the study said.

The verdict: Gatorade.

While Stewart aims most of his firepower at Republicans, the show is actually pretty balanced in its bookings, the study noted. Of the clearly partisan, 15 guests were conservative and 18 were liberal. Presumptive GOP presidential nominee John McCain was a guest on Wednesday's show.

"The fact that the lineup of guests is actually even surprised me," Rosenstiel said. "I thought going in that there weren't that many Republicans who would be willing to go on the show."

How exactly is "The Daily Show" very similar to "The O'Reilly Factor"? The article mentions "content", but aside from noting that TDS has Republicans as guests, it doesn't specify. Thanks for nothing David Bauder of the AP. Your article is very similar to what I read in The Onion.

No need to be a dick, dude. It's a thought exercise, highlighting the media's adaptation to a digital world. Obviously, Stewart and Reilly are fundamentally dissimilar. But, compared to, say Washington Week w/ Gwen Ifill or The Beltway Boys, they're kindred.

This "study" is just an effort by the MSM to degrade a show far superior to the drones, fools, liars, boy toys and hotties that comprise MSM news. Stewart (and Colbert) are comedic geniuses. Russert, Matthews, Gibson, Steph, Moron Joe, Brian Williams, Katie Couric, etc. -- all of them except for Keith Olbermann -- are talentless servants of the corporations that own them, willing to knowingly lie to serve the war policies of the Administration by cheerleading us into the war and knowingly lie to keep us in the war by pushing the fiction that it would be "irresponsible" for immediate, safe withdrawal of all US troops and contractors from Iraq.

They even feature Nazi Pat Buchanan whose newest WWII book reaffirms the assertions made in his old WWII book that the US fought on the wrong side during WWII.

This "study" shows the jealousy, stupidity and inaccuracy of Jon Stewart's lessers -- the media and the puditocracy.

This "research" group compares Jon's Stewart's Daily show with NEWS main stream media news channel like Brian Williams, Tom Brokaw, Dan Rather and cable host Anderson Cooper??? what are they sick???
And is this bad for Stewart or for the main stream media?
John has said it so many times that the Daily show is NOT (and I repeat NOT NOT NOT) a news channel, so if anything this report reflects how bad the main stream media is, and not Jon Stewart.

Wake up folks main stream media is turning things upside down. They are the cream of the crap, the top of the bottom, the best of the worst!!!!!

So which one of the c...p would you select? Hanity, O'Reilly, Clauter or Savage .... the is answer is YEACK!!!! NONE

Stewart & Colbert most always get it right. As satirists, they punch holes in the self-indulgent, over-inflated gasbags who masquerade as objective journalists. No, I don't get my news from them; what I get is perspective and commentary sadly lacking practically everywhere else. They never admit to being anything other than what they are. On the other hand, Rush, Glenn, Bill O, and their ilk would like you to believe they know what they are talking about. For me the worst of the lot is Glenn Beck, whose observations about the current state of world affairs are, in his opinion, supported by The Book of Revelation.

"O'Reilly's audience is only 24 percent more likely to have [four or more years of college] schooling."

Yes, and that 24 percent are all from Bobby Jones U. or have degrees in comparative religion (comparing Southern Baptists to Catholics . . . in a mean and snake-loving, talking-in-tongues kind of a way).

less motive and intention than you do on huff post...americablog..kos...or buzzflash....
lib blogs have been in destroy clinton mode since beginning of election....this very same group was telling us to support nadar instead of gore...

nothing progressive about huff post anymore...

the only difference is that the house repubs wanted impeachment...
huff post wants to destroy.the clintlons.......really tragic because instead the huff post and a handful of liberal blogs willing to say and do anything to get their guy nominated....meanwhile destroyed the democratic party....

Just what does your comment have to do with Jon Stewart?

And the Clintons would rather see the destruction of the Democratic party and the continued demise of our nation than to relinquish any of their power. Whether it's Slick Willie taking a trick from an intern, or Hillary using the tactics of the GOP to attack her rival, it's their way or no way. Wake the hell up.

the real wake up will be win obama gets destroyed by mccain
and it will happen
then you all will want to try and blame the msm....or the swift boaters...or .you will all want to fast forward because obama can't win...he can't even win one big state and the red states that he won on caucus night in midwest well he is already losing to mccain by some 30 percentage points...by the way polling that arianna doesn't want out there until she finishes off hillary....
you all need to wake up...
OBAMA CAN"T WIN....

John Stewart and Steven Colbert are the best news source on tv...and thats bad. PBS is ok but they go for the malarkey "official tail" of 9/11.

the noteable exceptions being the pentagon/evening news/propaganda show story and the preponderance of suicides in our returning war vets that seemed to be ONLY covered by TDS and totally ignored by other outlets.

Comedy Central was waiting for news like this. On September 17, Stewart appeared on Bill O'Reilly's "The O'Reilly Factor" only to be told his viewers are "stoned slackers" and "dopey kids."

"You know what's really frightening?" O'Reilly asked Stewart. " You actually have an influence on this presidential election. That is scary, but it's true."

Comedy Central used its viewers' test scores Tuesday to strike back at Fox News Channel and O'Reilly's viewers.

It also trotted out stats from Nielsen Media Research to show that Stewart's viewers are not only smart, but more educated than O'Reilly's.

"Daily Show" viewers are 78 percent more likely than the average adult to have four or more years of college education, while O'Reilly's audience is only 24 percent more likely to have that much schooling.

Plus, the network noted, "Daily Show" viewers are 26 percent more likely to have a household income more than $100,000, while O'Reilly's audience is only 11 percent more likely to make that much money.

You can't get the jokes if you don't know anything about the news - unlike O'Lielly's audience, which just consumes what he says and actually BELIEVES it!

Huh?? But, I thought the O'Reilly Show was A COMEDY SHOW!!! You mean to tell me that he is SERIOUS about all the really stupid things he says?
My bad.
