Vito Fossella Cries On House Floor After Drunk Driving, Adultery Revelations

Disgraced New York Congressman Vito Fossella broke down in tears on the floor of the House of Representatives today, apparently under the emotional weight of his recent behavior.

Fossella acknowledged on Thursday that he had fathered a daughter, now three years old, with a woman who wasn't his wife. News of his adultery came just a week after the Staten Island Republican was arrested for drunk driving in suburban Virginia.

Appearing on the House floor today, Fossella broke down when talking with House Chaplain, Reverend Daniel P. Coughlin, a Hill source who witnessed the event told The Huffington Post. The episode occurred shortly after the congressman voted against the Neighborhood Stabilization Act of 2008, a housing bill that passed through the House by a 239 to 188 vote.

Fossella's political and legal future is currently up in the air. He is expected to appear in court next week and could face jail time if convicted for his drunk driving charge.

According to the New York Times:

"A police report in Alexandria, Va., a suburb of Washington, said that Mr. Fossella ran a red light on Thursday just after midnight and had a "strong smell of alcoholic beverage" when he was pulled over. According to the report, Mr. Fossella told the officer that he was on his way to pick up his daughter, who needed to go to the hospital, although on Friday he said that he had been on his way to visit friends.

The report said Mr. Fossella failed several sobriety tests on the street, including a preliminary breath test on which he registered a blood alcohol level of 0.133 percent. After he was arrested, he recorded a level of 0.17 percent on another machine. The legal limit in Virginia, as in most states, is 0.08 percent."

There is substantual pressure for Rep. Fossella to resign and he should consider it. He used up his 3 stikes (using the baseball metaphor) and has struck out.
I am not sure what NY State allows, but could it be possible for a Democrat to be appoined to fill out the balance of his term and run in the fall. His district is the only one in NY City with a Republican, it includes Staten Island and a part of Brooklyn.

If he resigned, there would have to be a special election before November, which the republicans are afraid (rightly so) that they would almost certainly lose, so Vito will be asked (told) to stay in office until his term ends, but not run for re-election.

The NY republicans appear to feel that their best chance for success is to nominate, for November, one of two local office holders with strong bases of local support and hope that one of them can win. Local CW is that it will be difficult for the republicans to hold onto this seat (the only one in the NYC congressional delegation that is held by a republican--it used to be held by Susan Molinari.

Elliott Spitzer was a Democrat, but in general, it sure seems that a number of Republicans seem to have sexual proclivities that do not match their stated family values political positions they would like to impose on the country. The number who father children with women other than their wives is certainly higher. Maybe the Dems pay for abortions.­..and maybe, jsut maybe, they honor their vows more. I think about how Hillary took her marriage vows seriously and did not leave her philandering husband and gets trashed for doing that, but McCain left the woman who stuck by him druing his 7 years as a POW and married a younger much richer woman. And those who talk up the family valuses issues to get elected seem to be the really hypocritical. Sorry, it has nothing to do with being either a Dem or GOP really, it has to do with how you try to control those that don't live their lives like you think they should. It is not governments job to tell people how they should live, who they marry, what they watch, what they read and many other areas of life. If the behavior effects another and it can be proven so, without religious involvement, then they should change their behavior. I do not dislike religion. I very much dislike religion telling me how to live.
I really don't care how you live you life as long as you don't try to make me live my life like yours. That's just about it in a "nutshell".
