On Monday, Arianna reported that John McCain told her he had not voted for George W. Bush in 2000. Today, both The New York Times AND The Washington Post published articles with sources confirming John McCain had indeed told Arianna and others at an event that he did not vote for Bush in 2000.

From The New York Times:

Did Senator John McCain not vote for George W. Bush in 2000?

That question has kicked up a minor ruckus in political circles this week as Arianna Huffington and the McCain campaign have traded he-said, she-said barbs...

Now two other guests at the same dinner, given by the actress Candice Bergen, at her home in Beverly Hills, say they heard much the same thing as Ms. Huffington. Both of them, the former "West Wing" actors Bradley Whitford and Richard Schiff, were asked by Ms. Huffington to speak to The New York Times. Mr. Whitford said he would be supporting the Democratic nominee and had donated to Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama; Mr. Schiff is supporting Mr. Obama.

From The Washington Post:

In separate phone interviews, Bradley Whitford and Richard Schiff -- both of whom starred in the television political drama "The West Wing" -- said the senator made the remarks after he spoke at length about his reservations about Bush becoming president. Liberal blogger Arianna Huffington first wrote about the incident Monday, asserting neither McCain nor his wife Cindy backed Bush in his first presidential bid, and the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday that a woman who was also at the dinner confirmed Huffington's account, though she declined to give her name. ...

"He was going on and on about how horribly unqualified and untested Bush was, how the campaign had attacked his family," said Whitford, a registered Democrat. "Someone said, 'If he's so terrible, why did you support him?'"

McCain replied that as a member of the GOP, Whitford added, he always intended to back the party's nominee. Then, the actor said, someone asked McCain whether he had cast a vote in favor of Bush.

"He put his finger up to his lips, shook his head and mouthed, 'No way,'" Whitford said.

The Los Angeles Times talked to another source from the party on Wednesday that also corroborated Arianna's account:

Another woman who attended the 2001 dinner said Tuesday that Cindy McCain had told her she could not bring herself to vote for Bush. The source said she did not want to be identified, so as not to alienate the McCains.

Oh for goodness sake, he's so old he can't remember who he voted for, that's all.

This reminds me of the "bitter gate" episode.

I'm a little uncomfortable with reporting a remark from a dinner party. I think there's an expectation of a press-free zone, just like there was at Barack's San Fran meeting. At least this remark hasn't been distorted. But still.

I think this is a "trojan horse" ploy by McCain to maintain the illusion he is moderate/independent from the GOP. I can hear all kinds of moderates disappointed with bush in this country thinking "Well, he must be not bad since he didn't vote for Bush."

He was against Bush before he was for him.

"He was against Bush before he was for him."

And McCain won't "take the opportunity right now to repudiate and denounce President Bush” (as Jon Stewart had asked of him).

But it shouldn't be long before he flip-flops over Bush again.

I forgot to make my point...
Let's avoid using misdirection and hyperbole. Let that be the legacy of conservatives. We're suppose to be better than that.

Cindy lied also when she insisted no negative campaigning would ever come out of McCain's camp.

"I want to be there in Myanmar!" poor thing I'll bet she had to have an extra massage and martini because of the stress.

Well of course, the Republican response will be that these are Hollywood elitists and are obviously lying. But the funny things is, when you consider the context of the 2000 election and the way Rove savaged McCain and his family, it becomes entirely believable that McCain would not have voted for Bush in 2000.

But the cynical part is that when McCain now wants to become president he has morphed into a Bush lover and Bush III.

Cynicism, thy name is McCain (at whatever age!)

This is one of those strange moments. Given what Rove and Bush did to him during the run-up to the nomination, it would actually be amazing if he did vote for Bush.
But McCain is an unprincipled prevaricator who will make up what suits the moment best, and it's therefore quite in order that he's called on the carpet for this one.

richcpl, this makes mccain even worse. many people have lied to try to hide they voted for Dumbya, but how many people didn't and say they did?! mccocaine is a liar and caver who sold his soul to falHELL, ROBertson, and any other faux know-it-all. who'd he vote for? my guess would be either strom thurmond's corpse or vlad putin.

My bet is that McCain didn't vote at all. Saying he "didn't vote for Bush".... may have been intended to ingratiate himself with the powerful blogosphere doyenne, Ms. Huffington.

Excuse me, but there is a difference between NOT VOTING FOR BUSH, and voting for Kerry.
My guess is that McCain just didn't bother to vote at all..... double check to see if 2000 was an election year for Mr. McCain. My bet is that he didn't even vote at all.

I wonder if O'Reily and his "hit boy" Miller will address this?
Yeah I know... it's always the "left wing loonies" and the "vile" Huffington Post and blah blah blah.
Stick an apple under their nose and they'll call it an orange. The same ol crapola.

I don't know why he is denying it. It actually increasing my respect for him by about 1 gram.

The man could not stand up to Bush in public for smearing his wife and daughter, but in the secrecy of a voting booth he voted his conscience. It's too bad his public endorsement has indirectly cost thousands of lives.
