I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Obama And Hillary

On Friday, Barack Obama publicly raised the possibility of helping Hillary Clinton pay off more than $25 million in debts, including the $11.42 million she loaned her own campaign to keep it afloat in recent months.

"Historically after a campaign is done and you want to unify the party, particularly when you've had a strong opponent, you want to make sure you're putting that opponent in a strong position so that they can work to win an election in November. So, obviously, I would want to have a broad range of discussions with Senator Clinton about how I could make her feel good about
the process and have her on the team moving forward."

Talking to reporters in front of a Mexican restaurant in Woodburn, Oregon, the Illinois Senator warned that such discussions are "premature right now. She's still actively running and we've still got business to do right here in Oregon and in other states."

The Clinton campaign dismissed out-of-hand any talk of Obama helping Clinton with her debts. "We are running a competitive primary race," said spokesman Phil Singer. "We have seen the dangers of declaring 'mission accomplished' before."

Obama cannot under federal law assume direct responsibility for Clinton's debts because that would amount to an illegal contribution, far above contribution limits.

There are, however, a number of other alternatives. Obama could, for example, send out a solicitation in Clinton's behalf to his own donors and to other donor lists, asking for contributions to be directed to her campaign. He could, in addition, hold a joint fundraiser with the money
split between Clinton and Obama.

Strong opposition to helping Clinton, in the event that she withdraws from the contest, has emerged among Obama supporters who continue to voice intense anger at Clinton and her former chief strategist, Mark Penn. The opposition surfaced immediately after the Huffington Post ran stories
raising the subject.

At an Obama-run blog
for supporters, a number of contributors have argued that any effort to help Clinton pay off bills would be insupportable.

Story continues below

"The read-between-the-lines statement that I am hearing is that he would be expected to use his campaign clout (which as far as I am concerned, means his ethics and integrity) to attach her debt consolidation efforts to his future fundraising efforts. Which means he WOULD be taking money from lobbyists - big time!!!!" wrote "TH" of California. "So yes, while he may not be selling us out by giving away our hard earned money directly to her, Obama would be selling out by using his new political clout to help pay off her debts. Memo to OBAMA: You do not need to sell one ounce of your soul to gain this nomination. NOT THIS TIME! Remember? NOT THIS TIME!!!"

"Ken" from Wagoner, Okla., wrote: "I am also reading Sen. Obama is considering Hillary for his VICE !!! I am wondering what has happened to Sen. Obama, has he gone BONKERS? I pray he has nothing to do with the Clinton's or their financial problems !!!"

There is deep animosity towards Clinton in the Obama camp, where many believe she has raised issues of race and 'elitism' that will hurt the Illinois Senator in November.

In an interview with USA Today for example, Clinton declared: "I have a much broader base to build a winning coalition on," citing an AP article "that found how Sen. Obama's support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again, and how whites in both states who had not completed college were supporting me."

In addition, Mark Penn, the former chief strategist for Clinton and head of one of the biggest PR-lobbying conglomerates in the nation's capital, is seen as the quintessential Washington insider, capitalizing on political connections to become a multi-millionaire.

The immediate problem with Penn -- whose conflicts of interest plagued the Clinton campaign and ultimately led to his being publicly, if not privately, repudiated -- is that if Obama helps Clinton pay off her debts, a big chunk of those debts - as much as $10 million by some estimates -- is owed to Penn.

Penn is the CEO of Burson-Marsteller, which has "a global network of 94 offices and 1600 employees that brings world-class public relations to companies around the world."

Burson-Marsteller is one of the 246 companies owned by WPP, a leading global advertising and marketing services group. WPP controls a powerful array of public relations, advertising and lobbying companies, including Hill and Knowlton; Dewey Square; Ogilvy and Mather; Public Strategies Inc.; AGB Nielsen Media Research; Quinn Gillespie and Associates; Timmons and

Company; Wexler and Walker Public Policy Associates; Young and Rubicam Brands.

Penn, who remains a top adviser to Clinton, was forced to step down as the face of the Clinton strategy team after disclosures that he was meeting privately with the government of Colombia to promote congressional approval of a trade agreement which Clinton - and her most loyal voters -- oppose.

Consideration by the Obama camp of providing financial help to Clinton would be part of a peace-making process in the event that she withdraws from the presidential nominating contest.

Under federal campaign finance law, the Obama campaign cannot directly pay off Clinton's debts, or the $11.43 million she has loaned the campaign, because that would violate campaign contribution limits. But if Obama is the nominee, he and his donor base could provide invaluable help to her in raising money through signed appeals, joint fundraisers and by other methods.

The Obama campaign does not want to be identified as having discussions about Clinton's finances. Obama aides used the term "chit-chat" to dismiss any such discussions.

Both Obama and Clinton have broken all Democratic fundraising records. Through the first quarter of this year, Obama raised $234.7 million, and Clinton $189.1 million. As of March 31, the date of the most recent FEC filing, Obama had $51.1 million in the bank and just $662,784 in debt, for a net cash position of $50.4 million; while Clinton had $31.7 million in the
bank, debts of $15.2 million, and had loaned the campaign $6.4 million. (The FEC lists debts and loans separately.) More recently, Clinton disclosed that she had made her campaign additional loans, bringing the total amount she has loaned to her effort to $11.4 million. At the same time, her campaign was running close to broke for much of last month. Details of fundraising and spending for the month of April do not have to be filed until May 15.

Money is a central issue in the delicate negotiations that many expect to lead to a Clinton withdrawal. A winning candidate often offers to do whatever is legal to help a loser pay down debts. In this case, there is exceptional animosity between the two camps. Furthermore, Penn's interest in any negotiations are sure to be pressed very aggressively by the Clinton campaign's new Chief Operating Officer, Howard Paster. Paster was brought in immediately upon Penn's retreat, and, as it happens, Paster is Penn's boss. Paster is the executive vice president for public relations and public affairs at Burson-Marsteller's parent company, WPP.

In his new capacity as COO of the Clinton campaign, Paster is almost certain to be central in deciding how much of any money Obama might help raise for Clinton is used to pay off the debt to Penn. This set of relationships will undoubtedly impact the enthusiasm of Obama donors for a Clinton-Obama pact.

Nobody bailed Mitt Romney out after he invested 20 million (approximation) of his own money in an unsuccessful bid for the republican nomination. The Clinton's should be fully responsible for the campaign they have chosen, and personal money invested. I have sent more money to Senator Obama than any other political candidate in my entire life - largely to fight the Clinton machine. I would have preferred that money spent to win the presidency. I do not want to see any of my hard earned money going to the Clintons ever...

The most that will happen is he adds his voice to an appeal after she withdraws, like a "telethon" to pay off their debts. Even that's not so likely if you ask me.

For one, Romney is by far a better human being than Clinton. He is significantly wealthier than she is, and he's a man, which means there is no societal expectation that he's going to need to be rescued.

She has $109 million bucks, bail yourself out... or better yet, since she is so much like us hard working middle class americans... when we invest ignorantly and we lose our money, we learn and lesson and have to keep going...

Her campagin was stupid to invest money in... you've lost! take your loss, learn your lesson.. and move on!!!!

Does anyone really think if the situation were reversed she would be so gracious? I think NOT!

I just read on the Washington Post comments about a group that is supporting a Write-In campaign in November for Hillary Clinton. A web site has been formed. That may be just the respectable alternative for those who want their opinions heard by people who don't realize how deep the divide has become. Of course, in the long run that would benefit McCain, I suspect, but so would their staying home. It sounds like even Hillary will have to work pretty hard to get them to vote for the Democratic nominee assuming it is Obama. Maybe you ought to go to that article about the Blacks protecting Obama and read some of the posters there as opposed to here...it might open a few eyes about sentiments that you fail to believe here.

Well that would be a little better for Obama. Look at it this way -- if a vote away from Obama goes to McCain, that is a difference of two votes between Obama and McCain. If that vote were instead to go to a write in due to a sore losing Dem, well that is just a difference of one vote between Obama and McCain.

Look true Clinton supporters -- she played the game, she knew the game, and she did not win the game, But the deal is this is not a game!

I agree that this is not a game. I am just amazed at thie lack of pragmatism I read here.
If anyone thinks we can take another 4 years of the catastrophic policies of the past 8 years, go ahead, take your marbles and leave the game. You didn't get your way.

I have been voting since the Vietnam days. I liked Eugene McCarthy, but he didn't get the nomination. I thought Humphrey was an accomplice in the war, but I held my nose and voted for him rather than Nixon. Since then, I've had to hold my nose several times.

I may not have been thrilled with my candidates, but I chose the better of the two. It's great to be an idealist and vote only for the person you feel will make the absolute best president. Sometimes, you've got to do what's best for the country. John McCain certainly isn't. Ralph Nader is a nut who won't expose himself to the electoral process except on his terms....with no competition. He wouldn't have a clue what to do or a base to do it with if he won.

There's been a lot of nastiness on both sides. This isn't new in the history of this country. I'm amazed that people seem to think this is a unique situation. We were lucky this time to have two capable people competing for the nomination. Beats the hell out of some of the earlier elections of my lifetime.

Hillary will make a ton of money from this experience even if she loses the nomination.

"Barry" will make a ton of money win or lose. Winning the WH is easily worth $300M to "Barry" and Michelle. This will be from books, movie rights, speaking engagements, etc. You think they don't know this, don't see this as part of the "vision". How much will any of you "Barry" supporters get from this fortune. At least Bush sent you $600. You will have Barry's website to look at providing you can still afford I-net access.

The blind "Barry" supporters are a joke. He is no different on some levels then mormon cult leaders.
They lead people through their charisma. This dude is the devil, you will likely find out the hard way when you elect him.

Now the hack Bill Schneider is trying to push the Hillary VP thing. Check it out:

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/05/09/west.virginia/index.html

And he's trying to do it by pushing Hilary's ability to win the insignificant West Virginia primary. Does it really matter how Obama does in a KKK state?

They are a bunch of lying, bought hacks. Thank the Lord I quit before Snow joined. I probably would have shot the television.

I just use my parental control to block that and most other BS networks, ABC for example.

Don't enable her, she only has her political interests at heart and she's counting on you, Obama, to bail her out after she bashes you till June.

Please tell me this isn't true.

Check out this link to a Carl Bernstein article:

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/05/10/bernstein.clinton/index.html

Surely there is no possibility that Obama would even consider Hillary as VP. That would be almost as bad as her being the presidential nominee. I myself CANNOT vote for a ticket that has her name on it.

If Obama brings her on as the VP candidate, the ticket will not get my vote.

Someone please tell me Carl Bernstein is full of it.
Or let's a start a movement to nip this disaster in the bud.

What's so sad is how she is exploiting the people she calls "uneducated hard-working white people" by making them even more racists and ignorant. And I'm sure some of them are not racist, but just think she can bring back the 90s. Well, the bad news for them is that this is a different context and century. And if she can lie, cheat and still the way she is so obviously doing, what can she do in the White House? She is worse than Bush. She makes him look like a nice guy.

SHE can afford to use her own money or the money Bill got from his expensive speeches. If she wants to continue SHE should ask her lobbyists friends to help pay HER own debts. She says it will take another Clinton to clean after another Bush, while she can't even clean her own mess. PLEASE. Obama's supporters should not have to pay for her mismanagement or pay her back the money she LENDED for HER campaign. That is so IRRESPONSIBLE. And she has the nerves to call herself a COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF??? LIER-CHEATER-IN-CHIEF, yes.

Absolutely NOT.Not one penny to this woman. She has enough millions in the bank to pay for her own debts. Or maybe her staunch supporters can pay her mismanagement of funds.
Since when evil deeds get rewarded? I hope Obama doesn't make his supporters angry. Our donations are for him, and him alone. The nerve of that woman!

The money I sent to the Obama campaign was very difficult to find. Frankly, I'm broke, have no health insurance, and often have to get a cash advance to pay my rent. But supporting real change in our government was so important to me that I made some sacrifices and was able to come up with 3 donations averaging about $30 each.
Of one dime of that money were to go to Mark Penn or the ultra-wealthy Clintons, Mr. Obama would lose my active support, and that of many many others.
I imagine that his donations may already be dropping off in anticipation of such an ill-advised move.

pointus: Instead of sending your money to Obama, you should have sent it to one of the other T. V. Evengelists that could heal you if you got sick. That would have been money better spent.
They only spend the money they get in contributions on sportscars, mansions, and high living like Jim Baker and his wife.
I heard that Hillary Clinton was going to give back some of her supporters money out of what Obama gives her. I sure hope one of them is me. That would be just like winning the lottery.

He would never give away the money that you sacrificed for his campaign. He would only assist her in asking for donations. None of the money he has raised would be used for this purpose. Your money did invaluable good and got Obama to this point. Don't worry, he knows what he is doing. We are going to need her backers to win in November.
